Full Version: Lincecum Wins Cy Young

Well as a Cardinals fan, I'm a little disappointed. Maybe I'm biased, I don't know, but Carpenter should've won it. Carpenter and Lincecum locked horns in every major statistical category. When you compare them, here's who's better in each category.

Carpenter led in WINS, FEWEST LOSSES, ERA, WHIP, and HR/9.

Lincecum led in CG, SO, OPP. AVG.

Hmm. Which categories are more important? The flashy, highlight reel categories that Lincecum leads in? Or the categories that get you to the playoffs, in which Carpenter leads in?

Hmm, tough decision.

The CG's in which Lincecum leads Carp by 1 and the SO's in which Lincecum leads Carp by 2, have a little asterisk. People forget that Carp missed like 4 starts when he went on the DL.

He also pitched with an oblique strain the whole year. Not a bad year when you can throw your hat in the Cy Young voting after missing a handful of starts and pitching with an injury.

Also, Lincecum choked at the end of the season. Is a Cy Young supposed to choke at all during a season? Let alone 1month of it? Do you know what Carp did in the tail-end of the season? He only came off the DL tied for 1st place in the division. Beat them and put us in 1st and never looked back the rest of the season. 12-1 since the All-Star break.

That's a Cy Young.

Also, Carpenter hit a grand slam. Did Lincecum? Nah, I didn't think so.

Lincecum isn't just a good pitcher, he reliably puts in the sort of dominant performances that draw everybody's attention. He brings the heat and routinely makes very good batters look stupid and manages to eek out wins even without having the sort of bats behind him that Carpenter had.

Lincecum is exciting to watch and dominant. That's what gets you the Cy Young.

Carpenter puts up the same kind of performances.

Sure he doesn't K people, but that's not what wins a Cy Young (if that was the case, the Cy Young would be pointless). Carpenter never has been a K pitcher and it's won him one before anyways.

And the run support? Pujols was really the only bat we had until the end of July. And even then, the Cardinals bats magically went away in September (and coincidentally, so did our hitting coach at the end of the season.) Remember this game?...

The story of the Cardinals bullpen all season long.

All I'm saying is Carpenter was better then Lincecum in a lot of the important categories. All while missing a handful of starts. Carpenter also was almost unhittable in the latter half of the season.

Lincecum won because he's all flashy with his fancy strikeouts and let's all pity him because he's not on a good team. And also because some ESPN guy and some other no-name, left Carpenter off their ballot completely. Instead, they voted for Haren and Vasquez. Please!

I may sound a little defensive about this whole ordeal, but darn it, I need something to brag about and take away from this very discouraging Cardinals season!

I guess Milton Bradley's going to win the NL MVP next week according to these voters! rolleyes.gif

I'm a Cardinals hater. I thought Carpenter should have won it.

I just about lost my lunch.

As an avid baseball fan, and Cubs fan *sigh*, I'm outraged Lince has won this Cy Young. IMO, this was Carpenters award to lose down the stretch, and he did nothing to shake that notion in the slightest.

Tim looked sluggish in the final month. Worn down, if you will, but I will be quick to note his schedule wasn't easy. As a fantasy owner of the NL Big 3 this season, Tim's ERA blossomed, his K's were right around average, and WHIP shot up tremendously. Carp maintained a steady level, while missing a month due to injury. Hell, I'd be even willing to say Wainright was even better than Tim in the final month (I love, LOVE his curveball).

If it makes you feel better Vots, Carp was nominated Cy Young in my league and helped me win a World Series.

Check that rotation out.

At least he deservedly won a Cy somewhere.

Jeff Suppan did not win the Cy Young? He was robbed! laugh.gif

Ha ha. I thought my pitching rotation that brought me a championship this year was pretty good, but that's pretty amazing right there.

But yeah, I even think Wainwright could have beat Lincecum. Now Lincecum is an amazing pitcher, but the 1-2 in St. Louis were better.

And about those 2 writers that left Carpenter off the ballot completely, it's starting to come out why they did that.

The Steve Law character from BSPN, left Carp off the ballot because he threw 30IP less then everybody else. That's his reason! So because of that opinion of his, Vasquez got a vote from him. And not only that, this Mr. Steve Law guy voted Vasquez ABOVE Wainwright. ?!?!!?!!!??!

..............

?!?!?!?!!?!?!?

That's my reaction to that. I don't even know how to respond to that. Writers should not have the responsibility of deciding such a prestigious award. All it takes is some writer to have something personal against a player. Or stupid reasons like the other guy who left Carp out and voted for Haren, said his VORP and FIP (stuff like that) weren't as good. Please, that's fine talking for fantasy, but those stats don't matter in real games. It's ridiculous.

Even the SF bay area writer voted for Carpenter and not Lincecum.

What a travesty...
