Full Version: Don't Be Fooled By the Sack Numbers

Last week the San Francisco 49ers picked off Bear QB Jay Cutler 5 times, and road those 5 picks to victory in the league's first Thursday night game of the season.

In a game with 5 interceptions one would think that you would see a good number of sacks show up in the Box score -- wrong -- San Francisco did not sack Cutler once in their 10 - 6 victory.

However, if there was ever a great example of how easy it is to duped by statistics this is one. While the 49er defense did not sack Cutler all evening, they harassed, harried and hit and frustrated Chicago's latest incarnation of Rex Grossman all game long.

As a team, the 49ers have only 17 sacks, tying them with the Lions, Bills and Buccaneers for 23rd in the league. Of course those were the kind of numbers that were discussed before the Packers games with the Bucs and Lions, and each had their best sack days of the season when facing the Aaron Rodgers led Green Bay Packers -- TB 6 sacks and the Lions 4.

49er defensive coordinator Greg Manusky while acknowledging the desire to ring up more sacks said they are satisfied with the number of times they have pressured the quarterback:

"Even though the quarterback is not sacked, we are looking at that all the time. We want to get as much pressure on him as possible, and sometimes those are just as good as a sack because sometimes he throws it not in the right spot, which is great for us."

On Sunday at Lambeau the 49ers defense's number one goal is simple - get to Aaron Rodgers! If possible get him to the ground, if not harass and frustrate him.

They know from looking at film that Rodgers will not be as sloppy with the football as the glorified Brat from Chicago, but they are licking their chops at the prospect of rushing the NFL most sacked QB. It jumped out in the film room that Aaron tends to hold on to the ball longer than most NFL quarterbacks and is more apt to tuck it away than risk a throw down field.

"Rodgers just gives guys on the (defensive) line more time to get to him," linebacker Manny Lawson said Wednesday.

The Gauntlet Has Been Thrown Down. The plan is simple - GET TO RODGERS!

Will Mike McCarthy, Aaron Rodgers and the offensive line rise to the challenge?

The answer will be given on the hallowed grounds of Lambeau Field about 100 hours from now.

I'm all for Rodgers tucking and running. I'm not for him sitting in the middle of a collapsing pile of 3 to 8 very large angry men.

I think every D that faces the Packers will want to go after Rodgers. Everyone knows the line is struggling bad. It's obvious what the game plan for the niners will be.

AR did get rid of the ball more quickly last week, but also was stripped of it twice.

SF is third in defense against the rush and 29 against the pass. We need to have the o-line step up more than ever. If we can pick up some blitzes, AR is accurate and we make some big plays early the game is ours. If not it could be a very long afternoon.
