Full Version: Help me with my Mock

I am putting the finishing touches on my first attempt at a Packers' Mock Draft, and need help with my first pick. I have determined that I want a true Left Tackle in the first round. I figure we'll be picking in the 15-20 range. I am having difficulty sorting through the options. Perhaps you can help.

Here's a short list of those who might be available...

Trent Williams, Bryan Bulaga, Anthony Davis, Chris Marinelli, Selvish Capers, Bruce Campbell, et al.

Which would you pick if you had to take a LOT and why would you take that guy?

Probably Bulaga, but only because I've seen him play more than the others. I haven't done much research yet.

Bulaga or Davis. Either of those guys would immediately step in as starters for this team and would be well worth the pick and (at least one of them) should still be on the board when the Packers pick. I think that the rest of the guys you have listed will either end up not as good in the pro game or are major projects who will need years of seasoning before they're ready to be a starter.

I personally think that Bulaga is more of a pro ready LT prospect and should be better in the passing game right away (reminds me a lot of Chad Clifton to be honest), but I think that Anthony Davis could end up being the best tackle from this draft. IMO, his ceiling is the higher of the two and he's the best run blocking LT prospect in the draft. For that reason, I'd go with Anthony Davis. I'm tired of finesse football in Green Bay. I want big, mean mothers on that offensive line.

I would take Charles Brown over all of them.

If I had to pick, I would take Selvish Capers. The guy is highly athletic with a lot of quality experience. He's been a RT most of his career but that's been because Pat White is a lefty so he was still protecting the blindside.

Baluga scares me. I sense a big time bust.

Davis has failed to impress

Bruce Campbell might be my selection if I went OT in round 1

My choice is Okung

I don't know enough about any of these guys, but I'd say that OL in general has been historically one of the most productive and consistent routes to add good players in free agency, so I guess that I'd love to take care of either a starting guard or a veteran starter at tackle through free agency.

That being said, I've only seen Capers play of all those guys and he's pretty damn good.

I would like to say that I have not done much this year.Trying to stay retired. I have watched Rutgers play twice this year (Cincinnati and Connecticut ) Both times Anthony Davis was not impressive. His rep portrays him as atop level pass blocker.

I've always thought of Anthony Davis as raw in his pass blocking and more polished as a run blocker. In a lot of ways, he reminds me of Jeff Otah at Pittsburgh. . . only more athletic and with a higher upside. He's not my idea of an elite LT prospect, but I think that he'll be very good and could possibly great at the NFL level. Plus, depending on what other moves are made, I think that he could step in and start on either side from Day 1. That's why I really like Anthony Davis as a prospect.

I'm also high on Selvish Capers, Gabe Camiri and Matt Reynolds, but I think that they'll all need some time and experience before they're ready for the NFL game (thus pushing them to the 2nd round). With how bad this offensive line unit has looked this season I wouldn't complain about seeing two tackles drafted early (similar to Jacksonville) and just make sure the damn problem is solved once and for all. Then you've got talent and depth. A-Rod has time to throw and big bodies to open up holes.

The consensus seems to be that Okung and Williams will be gone by the time the Packers are likely to pick.
You have people rating the next tier in different ways- you know that Bugala, Davis and Matthews are juniors who haven't declared yet don't you? I read somewhere that Bugala said he would go pro if he was going to be a lst rounder and it seems pretty likely that he will be.

But more to the point- why are you locked in at left tackle with your lst pick? Clearly they need help there but you might be better off getting that help in a later round rather than overreaching to meet a need. If you had a choice between a stud running back, a shutdown corner and an average LT would you take the LT?

Good question...phylosophically I look to the 1st round for playmakers and LTs. I shy away from CBs, with exceptions of course. If a RB who is a playmaker can be had in round one, I'd look hard at him...but this year I have a hunch that J. Best (my fave playmaker rb) will come at a second-round discount because of his concusion problems. Therefore, I look to LT.

Given your scenario, all things being equal, I would take the LT over the RB and CB.
