Perhaps the mods will move this to NFC North forum (which is fin BTW), but it really does have a lot to do with out beloved packers...
I only watched the second half of Detroit's loss to the Vikes on Sunday, but I paid special attention on almost every play to Jared Allen. In some ways, he was a non-factor in the game, finishing with only one tackle (towards the end) and no sacks. I think he had one QB pressure (although that is an unofficial stat). Granted, Detroit shifted protection packages towards Allen, occasionally doubling on him with Hutchinson, or chipping with a back or tight end, but on may plays, Backus handled him alone. Now, Backus is a decent left tackle, but he is not considered by everyone to be a blue-chip top-tier talent at that position. They think his more natural position is left guard (oops, Hutch is there) or right tackle.
I know, I know Ray Edwards ended up with two sacks and multiple pressures bc of one-on-one with Cherilus at RT, and Kyle Williams ended up with a sack and lots of interior pressure, but when you think about it, isn't that preferable to allowing Allen to dominate the game the way we have??? 7.5 of his 10.5 sacks came in two games against the Packers. WTF???
In short, a bad team (Detroit) with an average LT (Backus) neutralized super-human Jared Allen and made him a non-factor in the game. True, they eventually lost, but it was close for a good part of the game before the Vikings pulled away. Why can't the Packers do the same? Are our OL players truly that bad, or is the coach(es)? More importantly, how can it realistically be fixed in the course of this season to give the team a chance at the playoffs?
