Full Version: Run Aaron Rodgers, Run...

I am trying not to simply complain about what is going on with the team right now. It is not productive and does not improve my mood. Several weeks ago I suggested the Packers start to bring back the short passing game, and for a while it seemed like they did. This team is not disciplined enough to run proper screens, and injuries and poor WR play in general have made the short passing game inneffective.

My new suggestion is that AR should watch some old Steve Young games. Young was the master at making the decision that a pass was not going to to happen, pulling the ball in and shooting straight up the middle. This had the effect of not only preventing sacks but it also made the defense worry it may happen again. Guys tend to break down their coverage when they are worried about missing our on the QB running down field on them.

Typically the primary reason against this type of strategy is that it will open up AR to hits. Obviously he is already being hit at a record pace, plus AR has shown a good use of the slide to avoid punishment. Another argument is that you do not want a run first QB. Usually you worry about a QB relying on their legs to bail them out when they are young. AR is young but he has been in the league enough years and played pass first that I am have no concern that he will try to become the next Michael Vick.

I think some people will point to the fact that AR usually has about 2 big runs a game. These runs are almost always after rolling out to the side in order to buy more time to pass. I am talking about firing right up the middle, with the intent fully on running, and not buying more time to pass. Further it is not just that AR is taking sacks, it is that he is taking sacks 10 yards deep most times. AR has a tendency to keep getting deeper to avoid the pressure in front of him. If he moves forward he will leave many defenders behind him and make them think twice about simply doing a speed rush to the outside, or even if it winds up being a sack it will be the 2 yard type instead of 12.

Breaking habits is hard, but AR needs to get rid of the ball or run. I think in practice there should be a buzzer or something else on him or his helmet that the coaches turn on after the play has started to let AR know his 4 seconds to throw are done. Pavlovian conditioned responses may sound extreme but they do work...

Again not saying this is an ideal solution that you would use if you had a good o line, but reality is that GB does not. Time to look at other strengths and use them.

I think that's a great idea. Just look at the last Minny game where he broke contain and rolled left. He was totally in the clear, no one within 10 yards of him and he stopped at the line of scrimmage to keep looking downfield. He couldve taken three steps forward and gotten the first down but instead he waited for Ray Edwards to eventually come along and sack.

Run Rodgers run! I shouted to no avail.

Oh wells, I agree, lets have a few more QB draws a game.

Agree, I find myself yelling at the tv too much when AR is holding the ball. Plus his running really should help his passing game. When DB's have to check occasionally if the QB has taken off they give the WR's a chance to break open.

Just a guess but I think McCarthy advises Rodgers not to run, not many coaches like to see their QB run the ball.

The guy will be lucky to make it through the season as it is. He gets beat up more than a nark at a biker rally, and you want him to run more?????????????????????????????????????????????i

I know for a fact that he does, time to change that though. I don't think even MM believes AR is in less danger on the run than he is 5 yards deep behind GB's O line right now.

at least if he runs he can see what is coming and slide as well as make yards instead of losing them. As it sits now, he gets hit anyways and often does not see it.

Rodgers has rushed 32 times for a 6.2 yard average, and number brought down by he many QB sneaks for a yard... This season I do not recall him ever getting hit hard on those runs, again he uses the slide very well. I remember him getting hit behind the line several times viciously...

I agree he is not likely to make it through the season the way things are going, that is why I propose they try something new. To keep doing what they have been and expect different result is the definition of insanity... Even if the punishment from the tackles were even(which I don't think it is) the runs would at least be for gains instead of losses.

Further the way the NFL protects QB's with tic tac penalties guys are almost scared to hit the QB. Players know that they will get fines from the league and get hit for a 15 yards penalty if they go for a kill tackle.

Hey, I share everyone's pain here. Personally; I just think he's a good soldier; following MM's orders. Where Favre was like screw you; I'm not getting killed and in this thing to win and would just basically ignore MM and call his own plays on the field.

Anyways; prior to this last weekend; as I haven't seen the stats yet; but AR was already leading the league in yards rushing by a QB. Personally; I think he should do whatever he has to to survive this season whether it's throw the ball quickly or run or throw it away. He can't keep taking hits like this. Those darn 5 and 7 step drops are stupid. With this OL it should be 1,2,3 steps and throw or run and don't hesitate.

Run Forest Run !!!!!!!

I can't tell you how many times per week I'm screaming at the TV for Rodgers to run. Hell, I'd think a Wildcat formation would be even more hilarious. I mean, if you have Grant receiving the snap, how many teams would expend Rodgers to come around and take a hand off? Green Bay has the luxury of having a QB that can run AND throw effectively, and MM needs to utilize Rodgers properly. I can't remember a single designed run for Rodgers called all season.
