First of all, a big congratulations to Ahman Green on becoming the Green Bay Packers all-time leading rusher. That's a lot of guys carrying the ball, and a really big accomplishment. Too bad it had to come under such terrible circumstances.

Now, on to this abomination of a game.

*There is an underlying lack of discipline, lack of intensity, and lack of commitment to any sort of identity that has permeated this locker room. It's no longer contained to just one area of the team. It's from top to bottom, offense, defense, special teams. Play calling. Fundamentals. Penalties. Tackling. We're a long way from being where they should be.

*We have become so accustomed to Rodgers being great every week. He was far from great today, for basically the first time all season. Too many deep throws into tight coverage. I applaud the gutsy run in the 4th quarter for what I THOUGHT was to put this Bucs team away, but all in all, a mediocre effort from Rodgers, at least by the standards we hold him to.

*Tackling was atrocious again today, and it's time to start holding Capers accountable for whatever is going on here. Kampman was in coverage for the Ward TD. Jarrett Bush got beat to the corner of the end zone. We've improved against the run, but look all too familiar everywhere else.

*We hired Slocum to get these guys back on the right track. Today we saw.... a blocked kick, returned for a TD, and a kickoff following what should have been a game-sealing TD taken back for 80+ yards. Accountability? No such thing.

*I'd like to applaud AJ Hawk on showing some life with more snaps given Chillar's absence. Great pursuit of the ball on a sack, and nice on-ball play to make an INT on what looked like a somewhat shaky call by the refs.

*This is some of the worst play calling I've ever seen in my time as a Packers fan, week after week. We routinely go away from the run for long periods of time when it's working. Except every first down, which is inevitably a zone play to the right. We run out of the shot gun far too often at too little impact. We pass deep way too often for our pass protection, and have few check down options. We use check down options excessively, however, when it's 3rd and 10 or longer. And it's often good for 4 or 5 yards. That might be why we're now 2 for 32 on 3rd and 10-or longer this season (good for worst in the NFL). We still suffer from presnap penalties. We don't come up to the line with any urgency or purpose. Nothing is crisp. Not routes, not blocking, not anything. I have the benefit of having much of the championship season on DVD. After watching the way that offense operated... high tempo, high percentage passes, quick hitting running game, moving the chains before the defense had a chance to breath. It's a stark contrast to what I see on a weekly basis here.

*We gave up six sacks to a team that had eleven coming in. Consider that. This is bordering on the worst pass protecting line of all time.

*SOME credit must be thrown the way of Josh Freeman, who looked calm, cool and collected with an 11 point deficit as a rookie making his first ever start. They might have a player there.

*Earlier this week, I made this statement. We had games against the Bucs, Seahawks, and Lions that should be expected wins. An extra important game against Dallas because of wild card implications and tie breakers, and then, presumably, taking two of five of: @ Pitt, vs. Bal, @ Chi, vs. SF, @ Ari. Throw that out the window. What we have now is a rather improbable task, one that I really have no faith in this coaching staff to prepare these guys to take presumably six of these final eight.

*There is much that I've called McCarthy out for in this post. Let me point out one thing in particular that may have been the stupidest of all the things I saw today. We get the ball at the TB 40 yard line, up 21-14 and a chance to get a big score going into the half, and a chance to get the ball to begin the 3rd quarter. With Clifton apparently healthy enough to play by most indications, TJ Lang is inserted into the game. Before play even begins, we see a false start, so we go first and 15. A run to the left, with Lang getting driven back into Grant's lap, and he struggles for one. Second and 14. The DE blows by Lang, putting pressure on Rodgers and forcing an incomplete pass. Clifton is promptly reinserted into the game, and we check down for 3 yards on 3rd and 14, then punt. Good teams do not do this. The preseason ended eight weeks ago.

*Long story short, GOOD teams don't shoot themselves in the foot with silly penalties at critical junctures. GOOD teams don't give up huge special teams plays with frightening regularity following crucial TDs. GOOD teams don't run a rotation on the offensive line half way through the season. We are not a good team.

This is a pretty scathing review from me, and I feel it's well deserved. I typically avoid going this route, but this team is no where near where it should be. Watching certain teams turn around their fortunes in one or two years and comparing it to us hitting a peak (presumably luck, or everything falling into the right place, in hindsight?) then seeing us plateau four years into this regime, it is now time for questions to be raised. I'll continue to cheer for victories week in and week out and hope like heck we right ship and make the playoffs, but I'm smart enough to know better. I'm expecting a continuation of undisciplined football and wasted potential. I pray I'm wrong.

Next week vs. Dallas may get ugly.

If this is the worst we see from Rodgers so be it. He is playing exceptionally well for only starting a season and a half now. The problem is that we hold him to such high standards because he is outplaying his experience level!!

But on the other hand, that o-line needs to be revamped at the tackle position. Don't tell me that XX% of the sacks are Rodgers fault because that is just hiding the real problem: our tackles. Rodgers holds the ball too long sometimes, but if we keep talking about that, we will eventually talk ourselves out of how crappy our line is.

EDIT: I'm not calling anyone out when I say "Don't tell me that XX%", I'm just stating

Oh my, I want to be optimistic, but, right now, there is no way. This team played listlessly on all sides of the ball. Sure, there were some highlights- Jones' catch for a TD, for example. But, quite simply, this team already seems to be "playing out the string". They are all professionals, and have pride in what they do. But this week, quite simply, for long periods, the professionalism and pride didn't show. Instead, they looked disinterested and out of synch.

My goodness, are we still writing about the Packers making the playoffs? Why? So they can have another chance at another embarrassing game? Good grief- I was really looking forward to this season. Now, I am simply hoping the Packers can be respectable the rest of the season, and then, after firing MM once the season is over, start the hunt for a new coach. And, quite simply, expect TT to be much more active in FA this off-season.

Quite simply, this loss was unacceptable. As for the game against Dallas- I'll address that tomorrow in the official game day thread- and I agree, that one could very conceivably get very ugly. Be WARE of the Cowboys game.

I'm watching the Cowboys - Eagles game.

They have a very good defense.

Philly just put 40 on NYG and Dallas has shut them down (13 points through three quarters).

This has all the makings of a blowout with Rodgers unable to finish the game.

Yes, Ware, indeed. 4 sacks? 6? Sorry. Going to bed also, find a soft pillow which describes my beloved Pack well. Soft.

did it seem to anyone else that our guys had an attitude of taking the Bucs for granted? even after the punt was blocked, it was like we all assumed that we could score at will and win going away. obviously the special teamers thought so, that's really the only way to explain that long return that basically set us up to lose.

i'm pretty put out by the game today. lots of questions. why don't we have more guys running shorter patterns on 3 step drops? why can't we consistently (or more than occasionally) pressure their QB? why didn't we try and run more when we obviously can't pass protect? why was Michael Clayton (ffs) so open?

at least we know what a bad game from Aaron Rodgers looks like (still better than half of the QBs in the league).

Excellent post, BF4.

Regarding the play selection, I thought this was one of the better games McCarthy has called in 2009 — what does that say about the others?

One addition to your critique, though: Ahman Green's record-setting run was a terrible call and killed what should have been the go-ahead drive. When the drive began with 11:30 remaining in the fourth, the Packers were up 28-23, and a score — even a field goal — would have put the Bucs in a tight spot. McCarthy called a couple of inside zone runs the first two plays, netting a first down. Then Grant ran hard through a tackle when Barbre whiffed on a block, and picked up four. In came Green, and riding a nice block from Colledge his change of pace gained nine and a first down. Great call, Mike! How often we have lobbied you to spell Grant! And now you have softened up the Bucs defense for the killer pass!

But no. Instead he called exactly the same run and Green bowled for three into a pack of tacklers, one yard short of the franchise record. Hmm. Now it's second-and-7 on the 48. Play action, surely!!! Everyone will be expecting the inside zone that you've just called four times in five plays, and everyone will be expecting Green to get the ball to get the record. So what does McCarthy call? Inside zone, Green. Two feeble yards. Third-and-five. Drive over. Punt.

McCarthy seemed more concerned about Green getting the record immediately, rather than a go-ahead score. That was to disrespect the Bucs, to overvalue his own offensive potency, and ultimately to gift-wrap the game. And so, fittingly, Ahman became the Packers' all-time rushing leader on a two-yard zone run that handed the initiative back to 0-7 Tampa in the fourth quarter of a close game. Pathetic.

He and the rest of the team shouldnt of put themselves in that position in the first place against an 0-7 team.

This was one of the lower points of this franchise in the last two decades. I said last year that the football gods would not look kindly on what Favre has done. It seems we are the ones who are paying penance.

Others have probably mentioned it already, but forget about putting Kampman into coverage.

FORGET IT.

Take him off the field - put him at Nose Tackle - put him at DT - better yet.....get him off the field.

He cant cover and will never learn to cover. Its a skillset his mind & body doesnt possess.

The Packers are in the bottom 10 i the league, and it's not going to get any better with a brutal sched coming up. I'd worry about the Dallas game, but the loss to the Bucs has made me realize, season is over. 8 games and the Packers still make the same damn mistakes.

From what I saw, they actually did take him out on a few occasions yesterday. Thing is, it just didn't help.

If we trade or dump Aaron next year because he doesn't fit the 3-4 scheme, I will be upset. He is a great DE and we are just not using him correctly. Guys like him are hard to find.

That whole situation really hit home yesterday. Either play a hybrid 4-3 and let him do what he does best or just don't play him. Having him cover is BS. Might as well make BJ Raji a slot receiver while we're at it.

That game yesterday was the worst Packer loss under McCarthy, bar none. That includes the blanking by the Bears at home to open the '06 season.

There were deficiencies in all areas. There was a lack of preparation and execution by the offense and defense. Poor game planning and play calling. Special teams was pathetic.

The line was especially bad. Once Tauscher went down they were in shambles. I consider it a complete indictment of Thompson's drafting failures that the person responsible for helping the line the most is a 33 year old holdover from the Ron Wolf era coming off ACL surgery. That HE appeared to be the cog holding it together early in the game is disgraceful. It also speaks poorly of the coaching staff that the player they hand selected in March - March! - to step in and start at RT has not progressed and couldn't hold his own against one of the worst pass-rushing teams in the league.

And for all the talk about coaches not being able to settle Favre down and play within their system, seems like Rodgers is developing a a troubling stubborn streak of his own. Holding the ball much, Aaron? Looking for that big play? Take the check down, run out the clock, move the chains.

I don't know what the answer is here, but this is about as bad as I've felt about the Packers in a long, long time. Something is not right with this team. They're undisciplined and have developed a terrible reputation as such which really sticks with opposing teams and officials. This is nothing but a moderately talented team that plays soft and thus underachieves. I would be shocked to see them win more than 3 games the rest of the year.
