Full Version: Disgusted with Packers' fans!

One reason I became a fan of the Green Bay Packers is because of the loyalty and passion of the fans. I'm from Philly, born and raised, and seeing how the Eagles fans treat other fans led me to following another team. I've been to Green Bay twice to watch the Packers, and never have I met such generous and kindhearted people. That being said, the way some of the fans acted yesterday put the worst feeling in the pit of my stomach. Booing Brett Favre? 95% of the crowd was booing Brett Favre. Why? Have we forgotten this man single handedly turned the whole Packers organization into a winner. Where were the Packers before he came to Green Bay. A coffin with Brett Favre laying in it during the pre game? Favre saying fans were giving him the middle finger when he walked off the bus! This makes me SICK! Where is the class that I've grown to love. I'm sorry, but that is just inexplainable! I came into this game with mixed emotions not knowing how Favre would be treated! He didn't deserve this! I'm actually glad he went on the field and shut some of you fans up with his performance!

Classless!!!
sinatra
Get a grip. The Packers fans cheered him for 16 years. He's playing for a division rival. You don't cheer for division rivals.

He hand-picked the Vikings as the team he wanted to play for. How is booing Favre any less classy than going to play for a divisional rival of the team you played for after almost two decades? Talk about "loyalty." How has Favre been in any way loyal? 28 teams he could go to that aren't in the Packers division.

I have a short fuse for anyone that faults the fans for booing Favre. There's nothing unclassy about it.

Cheering for a divisional rival is classless. Actually, no - it's idiotic. The time to cheer Favre is when his number is retired. Until then, he's an opponent. You boo.

Oh, and yes, he absolutely did deserve it. He dragged the Packers through hell and went to a division rival. *%$# him.

If you don't like it become a Viking fan because it is clear your not a Packer fan but a Favre fan. Packer fans cheer for their team NOT the other teams players more so when they are a divison rivial!

Yea you're right sinatra, *%$# him. The coffin thing was done with TO when he came to the Linc as a Cowboy. TO bashed the organization and the quarterback through the media relentlessly. I don't think I've heard Favre say anything about the Packers' organization or its fans. How easy would it be for him to say "I wasn't sacked once, threw no interceptions and had 7 touchdowns...FU Ted Thompson! And FU fans for booing me." He didn't. Instead, he DESTROYED the Packers, put their playoff hopes in doubt, and showed class with his interviews by saying they're a good team and he hopes the fans come around. It has nothing to do with picking the Vikings to stick it to the fans. It's alllll about getting back at Thompson and proving a point!

For the record: I don't mind the booing because he does play for a division rival. It's the middle fingers and pretending to put his dead body in a coffin. I just didn't think I would witness that yesterday!

And you bring up an interesting point. His number will retire with the Packers. Will they still boo him? Will time heal everyone's wounds? Or, do we not accept him anymore and he enters the HOF as a Viking! Imagine that!
sinatra
I didn't hear about the coffin thing. That's overboard.

I have no problem with fans shooting him the bird, but I wouldn't argue with anyone who does.

The booing, though, was perfectly acceptable.

A bit hard to take you seriously after a statement like that.

I was actually a little disappointed to see that much purple in the stands. At least it looked that way on TV.

I think people have a right to be upset with Favre for a number of reasons, not the least of which is this...Where was this the last 5 years? Or even 10 years. Mistake Free Brett was nowhere to be found in Green Bay the last decade or. And now he's just pleased as punch to mentor the young players on the team, too. Now...finally... at the age of 40 he decides to play within himself, to take what is there and not try to force things. To help the young guys on the team out instead of sitting in his ivory tower by himself. I'm sure Jets fans are not too thrilled either.

I suppose next you're going to tell me he's not going to have his annual 2nd half swoon or choke in the playoffs. mad.gif

Ready Jeremy? Try to pay attention here:

After the Lombardi Era, from 1968-1991: The Packers had 5 winnings seasons and 1 playoff appearance. PATHETIC!
Favre comes to the Packers in 1992-2007: The Packers had 13 winning seasons and 11 playoff appearances including a Super Bowl win.

Now I'm taking nothing away from the supporting cast around Favre, but it's CLEAR that since Favre's arrival -- he transformed the team into a contender. Facts!

One player did all that, eh? We're not going to give the coach any credit? Ron Wolf? Reggie White? The other 51 guys? The front office? Favre was a HUGE part of the turnaround. But to say he did it singlehandedly is rediculous.

And who brought Favre here? That man is every bit as responsible for the Packer resurgence. And who's the man that brought that man in?

i'm sure it would surprise Reggie White, Mike Holmgren, LeRoy Butler, Sterling Sharpe, Dorsey Levens, Edgar Bennet, Andre Rison, Keith Jackson, Antonio freeman, Frank Winters, Chewie, (i think u get where i'm going with this) that it wasnt a team game. only cause of favre did the franchise turn around... rolleyes.gif

can someone else dig up the records for while Reggie was on the team? i'd like to compare that to when it's been only favre.

I booed from Germany. I hope u guys could hear me. my neighbors sure did.

I totally agree. I have to respect a Vikings fan willing to plop down the $300 or whatever the going rate was and drive 6 hours to support his team. No respect for a Packers "fan" wearing a Queen's jersey.

Besides echoing the above responses, it made me happy to see the average fan saw through Favre's charade as he tried to impose his will on the team. It's amazing how people forget how lousy he played in his final season in Green Bay. I'm beginning to believe that when the team wouldn't do what he wanted he tanked it on purpose.

Bart Starr would never have played for the Bears.

This is a serious subject and maybe should be started as another post. Waaaay too many opposing team fans are in the stadium for the big games which tells me there is a serious problem with a percentage of the season ticket holders. I still am appalled at how many Giant fans were at Lambeau for the championship game. Usually a ton of Bears fans at Lambeau as well. With the waiting list for season tickets as long as it is there should be close to 100% Packer fans in the stands. This definitely contributes to the lack of home field advantage lately.

How many people do you know who would have loved to go to the game to cheer on the Pack?

There are plenty of New York haters out there but you will never see that happening in Yankee Stadium. Too many "fans" are selling their seats for profit instead of backing the players on the field.

If you aren't going to go, give your tickets to someone who cares.

I agree. He gave up against the Giants. Its too bad that MM didn't have the nerve to put Rodgers in as a closer like they do in baseball games. Did Randy Johnson finish every game he started?

Yeah, that is an issue. So easy though to scalp your Tix for the most valuable games. I'm not sure what the going rate was for this game, but I imagine selling off this one game could almost pay for the rest of your year. Kind of hard to fault someone for that. I don't know what the solution is, though.

When he retires (maybe) and has his number retired to the Lambeau rafters, I will cheer for him and be remember the legacy that he gave our team for 16 years. Until then, he is a player on the Vikings, and I will boo every Minnesota player whether or not I like them. I boo because it can throw the opposing team off and help our team win. The whole idea of home field advantage is that the home team is supposed to be given a more favorable environment to succeed than the away team. Field and weather conditions are important factors, but fans are a HUGE part in creating this environment. It doesn't help our team to cheer for the Minnesota Viking quarterback, just as it doesn't help our team if we are creating lots of noise while A-Rod is running the Offense. I know fans have favorites and Brett Favre was likely a lot of ours while he played on the team; I understand that, but that was not the time to cheer for him, because it's his gunslingin' laser rocket arm and uncontested love of the game blah that beat OUR Green Bay Packers, and it makes no sense to cheer for that.

He was a drunk, womanizing, hillbilly that couldn't read a defense when GB gave up a 1st round pick for him. His former coach treated him like a buffoon to win $100 bets on his arm in pregame and wouldn't even suit him for the game because he was too much of a lush to learn the playbook.
If not for Ron Wolf and the Green Bay Packers he might well have puked his way out of the NFL before he ever had a chance to throw a ball. He would pass out in his truck in the parking lot because he was afraid he wouldn't make it to practice if he went to bed after a bender.
He was tapping every adoring little groupie he could, upstairs from one of his favorite watering holes while his wife sat home.
He has singlehandedly ended the Packers playoffs on multiple occassions because he could not control his urge to win it by himself. He SHOULD have been benched several times in those years.
In his last few years with the team that MADE HIM, he has handcuffed the Packers with his waffling, refused to lend assistance with the development of a teammate out of insecurity and jealousy, and only participated the bare, required minimum in the offseason to help the team get better. Most people with 8 figure salaries have a little more commitment than just working part time. (most people who aren't celebrities, anyhow)
On top of that, he expected to just walk in and have everything put on hold and catered to his every whim. When he didn't get that, he dialed up his #1 sycophant with a national TV show, to politicize against the hand that fed, to try and make himself look like the victim.
Until he takes the same public forum to apologize to us for his unwillingness to commit to the same level as the rest of his former teammates to make the Packers a better team, he should be boo'd by Packers fans. I'd prefer he retires a Queen, since he acts like a princess.

First thing I noticed when the cameras panned over the crowd was how purple things looked.. The boo's were deserved for Favre.. but after the game one can sit back and go "wow" the old guy just dismantled us again.. He is an amazing player and I am happy he was a staple for 16 years.. he's moved on. we should move on.. Next time we play them again could be in the divisional round of the playoffs.

Sorry Jersey Cheese....he deserved the booing and he'll continue to deserve it as long as he plays for the Vikings. The coffin thing is actually kinda funny when you think about it because I'm pretty sure it was meant in jest (at least it better have been). I was more surprised that more people did not bring their #4 Favre jersey with them to the game and throw them in mass on the field before the game. Like they do sometimes in baseball when a person from an opposing team hits a homerun and they throw the ball back onto the field.

Plus Leroy Butler said in an interview that he would take exception to anyone making the comment about Favre single handily turning the Packers organization around.

Now when he retires.....I'll gladly cheer for him on any occasion.

rpiotr01
I was there and I booed him as loud as I could.

Truth be told, for me, it's really never going to be the same. After the way he's acted, things that were said, playing for the Vikings etc., I'm never going to be able to cheer the guy and like him like I once did. When his number is retired I'll watch them do it and I know he deserves it, but it's one thing to cheer for a guy when you're not sure if he's a shmuck or not, it's something altogether different to try to cheer for a guy when you KNOW what an ass he is. Very sad.
luv that team
I work with a Viking fan and she was giving me crap about Packer fans not being classy and booing Favre. I asked her that a few years ago when the Pack was looking at trading for Randy Moss, would she have cheered for him if he was in a Packer uniform, catching TD passes in the Metrodome. She seemed to have more of an understanding.

I'll take defense to your statement that Favre "single-handedly" turned the Packers into a winner. It seems that quite a few people forget that the 1996 Packers Super Bowl team had the #1 ranked defense in both yards and points allowed. Some also forget that the Super Bowl MVP was a special teams player. The only special teams player to ever win the Super Bowl MVP. Favre didn't single handedly win in Green Bay. I believe some people like Ron Wolf, Mike Holmgren, and the great Reggie White would take offense to that statement. Holmgren got to another Super Bowl with another team. Reggie White was arguably the best DL to ever play. Ron Wolf brought in tons of talent. That defense on that Packers Super Bowl team was loaded. It wasn't all Favre. He deserves credit for his many accomplishments but it really drives me nuts when people state this myth that Favre single-handedly turned the Packers around.

This crap about the magical Saint Favre swooping in and saving a franchise single handed is ridiculous. Had 1991-94 Favre ended up in a big city he would have been a gigantic dud. Imagine him on the Bungals or the New York Football Jets with Rich Kotite, or one of the other hapless teams in the NFL.
As lucky as Green Bay was to get him, he was equally lucky to end up on in a small town and coached by Mike Holmgren, who should go to the Hall of Fame just based on his work with QBs (Favre, Young, Montana, Brunell, Hasselbeck). Speaking of Brunell, Favre played his way so close to being benched in 1994 that Holmgren had to stake his NFL coaching career on the guy because everyone else on the staff wanted Brunell.

Frankly, I was proud of Green Bay fans on Sunday. The whole "How could they, with all Favre did for the Packers" theme is insulting, as if it was charity work. As if he hadn't been paid handsomely and rewarded with near-deity status in this state. Favre maybe didn't owe Ted Thompson or Mike McCarthy any apologies, but he sure as **** owed the fans one. Instead, Favre's basically said I hope they still love me. And if not ... get over it.

And one last little tangent. I really believed until this last weekend that at one point I'd be able to forgive and forget and cheer for Favre when they retire his number. But I don't think I can anymore. Not because he unretired and wanted to play and weaseled his way to a divisional rival, but because it has become patently obvious that he doesn't really care that much about Green Bay fans at all. That's fine, he doesn't have to care.
And conversely, neither do I.
To quote Forrest Gump: That's all I've got to say about that.

I cannot belive the mods here let this post stay up as I thought personal attcaks were not allowed. I once said I thought TT was an egomaniac and was "WARNED" about personal attacks. But the above really crosses the line.

I love Favre.....well used to, I still respect him but I would of booed him if I was at the stadium too. Under no circumstances would I ever root for him to do well aganist the Packers. Im not so sure Jerseycheese is much of a Packer fan.

This is a joke. The packers had the very good D's when they went to the SB's. They are a very important reason why the Packers got to them and won one of them. to say they would be a under .500 team shows that you giving Favre way to much credit and spitting in the face of the rest of the team.

Did you ever see that show on ESPN "The Five Reason's you can't blame..."? They had one on the Falcons trading Brett Favre. All 5 reasons were the same: "Brett Favre". The guy was a train wreck of Ryan Leaf proportions before the Packers rescued him. And that would have been his fate had Ron Wolf not been infatuated with him.

So yeah, the Packers made Favre as much as he made them in those years.

I don't think I've heard Favre say anything about the Packers' organization or its fans.

He basically called the front office liars and a joke on his Greta interview.

He completely disrespected Packers fans when he made the "real Packer fans understand" comment.

I cheered for Favre for 16 seasons and took the good with the bad. His time had come to move on because the late season fade became inevitable the last 4 or 5 seasons.

Booing an opposing QB is what fans do. Booing your former QB who is now with a rival is expected considering how he finagled is way out of GB so that he could play for MIN.

I think I have just read the ultimate response to Favre in Green Bay. It says perfectly everything I've been feeling over the past couple of years. There were rumors of Favre's philandering ways when I lived over there, but never spoken outwardly. His partner of many years, with his kids, was ready to show him the door. A Vicodin freakin' drunk. Ron Wolf pulled him out of Atlanta and Mike Holmgren molded him into an NFL QB. Without those two people, he was snot on the sidewalk. Now we're supposed to honor him like a Messiah. Sorry.
Now were supposed to honor this skunk, who smirked when the fans booed him Sunday. Jackass.

It's funny. Nobody ever seems to remember just how important the Special Teams were during that Super Bowl season. Even with a great defense and a great offense, it was the ST's play (and not just D. Howard, but the coverage teams as well!) that pulled us over the top.

We had a great team! smile.gif
