Consider the spot Favre was put in. Lets say that at your job, the boss came to you and said "Train young Aaron here, so he can take over your job in two or three years." I'd be resentful beyond belief. Wouldn't you?
If you were like 63 or 64 years old and performed a complex function vital to the organization, you'd be a fool to resent being asked to train up your replacement. Speaking more professionally than about football specifically, if they've given you solid employment for your entire career, I'd go so far as to say it'd be unforgivably selfish to put them in that situation.
Reminds me of the situation of this winery not far from where I live*:
It's a great place; good people, solid wines and extremely reasonable prices. It's run by a bunch of friends who are in it as "second careers", so they're mostly there because it makes them happy to do it (rather than really needing the money). They do great events like cookouts where they'll fire up a few big grills and you can BYO meat -- last year I traded two of my brats for a bottle of wine.
Anyhow, so the upshot is that it isn't a snooty Napa-style place.
This winery itself has been there a while, having been founded by the owner back in the 80's. These other folks had been brought in over time and gotten parts of the business, but all the permits were in the name of the founder.
Unfortunately, the old guy died back at the start of summer -- he was something like 82 years old. Since all the permits were in his name, they had to immediately shut down their tasting room (which accounted for almost all of their sales), and they've been shut ever since. It turns out that even a fast-track permit takes between 8-12 months, so they've been closed down and are losing money like crazy.
Anyhow, the lesson here: You can't refuse to think about the future just because it's uncomfortable. The folks who run the winery now and who've owned most of it for more than a decade were too polite to bring up the licensing with the original owner and get it transferred into the name of a corporation, and as such their business -- what these people are essentially counting on as a retirement fund -- is suddenly in legitimate danger.

Livermore Valley Cellars (LVC). It's located in the Livermore valley just east of the Bay Area with a bunch of other wineries, and is what Napa was 30 years ago before it got so overly touristy. If you're visiting, I highly recommend a visit to the area.
