Everyone is assuming that Green will be brought in as a possible third down back and that's about it. I think there is a strong chance that Green could serve the same role that Marcus Allen did at the end of his career with the Chiefs. Goal line back. It really is the Packers biggest weakness with it's current group of backs and it is something that he excelled at throughout his career. What do you guys think?

Sorry, Green has shown nothing the last few years, except he is injury prone. TT was absolutely right to dump, and the Texans were absolutely stupid to sign him. Now that the Packers have signed him, I am ambivelent. IF he can provide Rodgers with a third down outlet who is productive, fine. If not, let him retire. A great back in GB for a few years- but now? Done. IMO.

And, by the bye, no, I don't believe for a second he'll be another Marcus Allen. Although I would happily eat these words if the Packers got to the SB, and Green was the MVP.

What have they got to lose? He must have showed them something when they worked him out. Often when a guy gets injured like he did, they need some serious time off to heal. He seems to have embraced the backup role and if he can provide some leadership to boot then I think it is a good deal for both parties.

I am referring to Marcus Allen at the end of his career when he was not the feature back but he was a goal line specialist. I have never thought Green would have a major impact in the base offense but maybe he could in a very specific role.

I was kind've thinking the same thing myself.

We all know that Green's burst/speed aren't what they were, however, if he still has the ability to run over a Linebacker or safety now and again on third down that could really help extend drives and give Grant a breather here and there.

Helpful thread because I had been trying to think of any RB that age who proved useful.

Still, my highest hope here is that Grant is just the sort of player who needs to hear footsteps to get to a very high level -- I don't see Green being a major contributor. I could be wrong on either front, of course.

I agee. I don't see Grant as much of anything. We need help at that position as well. That position, unlike others I believe can be adressed through mid round draft picks.

Jamal Lewis had an okay return after he was initially let go. Marshal Faulk.

It sure was nice seeing him put his shoulder down on the sideline and get that extra yard like he used to.

I didn't get the kickoff return thing.
