Full Version: Davis or Witten?

Which TE would you rather have for the rest of the year - Witten or Vernon Davis?

I need to package one of these guys up to get another WR on my team, and I can't decide which one I'd rather keep. Obviously history says Witten is the better TE, and he's been more consistent than Davis this year, but Witten is struggling this year. Does he get better with Austin emerging as a good WR and then have a good second half of the year and hope Davis off a huge game increases his value? Or, do I hope Witten's name value can get me a little better return in a trade?

If you're not in a PPR-league, Witten's probably not helping you to much. I do think though Austin is going to help Witten out by attracting attention towards him. So Witten could start scoring more. His catches and yards are there, just not getting those TD's.

Davis is certainly forming some chemistry with Alex Smith. But he's been the target for Shaun Hill as well.

If I had to choose a TE to ship away, I'd pick Witten. Here's my reasoning...

Both TE's have been catching their fair share of balls. Both TE's have been racking up yardage pretty consistently. The difference is Davis is seeing way more TD passes. While I do eventually think Witten will catch a few more TD's because of the emergence of Austin, but that's questionable, just a guess. Davis is already catching those TD's and I actually think Davis still has some upside here. I think he's capable of being one of those elite TE's that put up 80-100 yards every week.

Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking as well. The big thing for TEs is going to be catching TDs, and Davis is definitely doing more of that. Crabtree might cut into his numbers a bit, but at the same time, if he does emerge, it'll keep teams from being able to completely focus on Davis.

You also have to take into account the value of these players. You may be able to get someone much better for Davis than for Witten due to Davis's good play. If you think one of those guys will play much better than the other, keep the better player, but if you think they will put up similar numbers, then trade the guy that can get you the most in return. It might also be worth it to check out their opponents late in the season so you will have favorable match-ups come playoff time.
