100% speculation.

With Zorn in trouble in Washington I wonder why the Redskins would go after Sherm Lewis of all people to call plays? The guy has been out of football for 5 years.

My theory is he was hired as part of a recruitment of Mike Holmgren who doesnt want any part of this years disaster. Lewis comes in to finish the year, get the team familiar with terms and calls of the system. Holmgren walks in next year, some parts already in place, ready to take over.

Holmgren is going to want power, is Dan Snider ready to hand it over????

Wow. Interesting twist on the strange doings in DC. I really don't think this is plausible- after all, it was generally thought that Lewis was merely a figurehead in GB, and that Holmy actually controlled the offense. Also, would the terminology be similar? After all, Lewis and Holmgren were together, what- 12 years ago? And since then, Holmgren coached a different team, in a different division. Also, as you noted, Sherman has been calling bingo at a retirement home in Cleveland. Isn't this similar to having your new OC be pulled from running a B&B, which Al Davis did a few years ago?

I think this is simply Snyder trying to humilate Zorn to such an extent that he resigns in disgust- therefore saving Snyder millions in salary. This must be extremely difficult for Zorn- but, on the other hand, if he can gut it out, he can ultimately stick it to Snyder's wallet.

It could happen I guess, but I just can't see Holmy on the east coast.

Good theory, but anyone with a grain of sense will stay far away from that debacle.

Agree, but he said something very interesting a few months back to some local reporters that he's coached in the Midwest, hes coached on the West Coast, and that the East Coast might be intriguing to him. He didnt mention any specific teams. He may have just been planting some ideas, but we will see what happens. I think he's going to the highest bidder (money and organizational power) between Dallas and Washington. Getting power from Jones or Snider will be a challenge, but it could get interesting to see who is willing to give up what.

I'd go with Washington. Dan Snyder might be an idiot with deep pockets, but he doesn't meddle in the football side of things as most people think he does. Jerry Jones insists on being the guy calling the shots in Dallas and undemining his coaching staff. Snyder just supports his guys and signs the checks. The biggest problem in D.C. is that Vinnie Cerato is an idiot and doesn't have any idea of how to build a team. Holmgren shouldn't have that much trouble getting control over all the football operations (if Spurrier and Gibbs were both afforded that luxury) and actually do something good in Washington moving forward. For all his flaws, Dan Snyder has shown that he's willing to do whatever his football guys think is necessary to put together a good team. He just hasn't had guys in place who can actually do something with that. Holmgren would IMO. If I were Dan Snyder, I'd fire Cerrato and Zorn right now. I promote Greg Blache to be the Interim Head Coach and I tell him to focus on getting the good young players out on the field and seeing how they respond. Start building for tomorrow instead of riding that sinking ship all the way to the bottom.

I've wondered where Holmgren could end up. I don't see him going to a total loser team like the Browns. But I don't see him going somewhere that has a power-hungry owner, either.

My gut tells me Dallas. Jones has always had a great deal of respect for Holmgren going back to his days as OC in SF. Jones is far from the poor house but I have heard some wispers that the cash flow is not what he thought it would be. He has traded down and some I have heard specualte is that he did not want to pay. He also kept Phillips for one more year, not wanting more on the payroll....Also he never sold naming rights to the new crib. I think winning will trump power in JJ's mind

Now THERE'S a conspiracy theory I could almost believe. Obviously Zorn is a sacrificial lamb this year. Daniel Snyder is almost certainly eyeing up some of the "big name" coaches for next year, and Holmgren's got to be on that list. He's going to open up the checkbook. We'll see if anyone bites.

Ellis269
Those are great points as well. Snyder stays out of the football stuff more than most think, but isn't afraid to dig deep into those pockets to get anybody that he wants and Jones needs to get back to being a contender if he wants to keep turning a profit. Either guy could make a move to get an established Coach with a Super Bowl ring like Mike Holmgren, Bill Cowher, Mike Shannahan, Jon Gruden, or Brian Billick. Whatever they do I think that those two teams will end up making BIG MOVES this offseason. It's going to be a very interesting year in the NFL. . .

Holmgren recently tore into the Redskins organization for treating Jim Zorn unfairly.

Highly doubt he'd put himself in a position where he would share ANY power, especially with Dan Snyder, the man who apparently honed his personnel skills on Madden video games.
