While many fans see the safety position being a weak one apparently the Packers organization doesn't. Mc Ginn had a piece in todays MJS focusing on the position in which he says " If, and it's a mighty big if, Bigby and Collins are up to line up for the final 11 games, the Packers couldn't be more confident about the deep middle of their defense."

Much of the article focused on Bigby- His coach Perry said he has good speed for a safety and is highly intelligent.
I know some have questioned his intelligence but Perry said "If you're not careful, you might not understand that about him A(his intelligence) - he understands the game."

Perry likes the fact Bigby and Collins have good chemistry on and off the field- and is excited to think about the possibilities when they really get comfortable with the defense.

But if not.............we are in deep sh**.
OH Packer revisited
The defense Capers runs when he has both his starters is VERY different than when one is out. You could see the confidence he has in the backups....NONE. Very few blitzes when they're back there. Dropping everyone into coverage. From what I've noticed, when one of our starting safeties is out of the game the defensive playbook is cut in half much like when a qb goes down.

This is a very telling point, and SHOULD dictate TT's priority list.

IF there's a new CBA, both Bigby and Collins will most likely become URFA's. IF there's no new CBA, both will be RFA's unless tagged (which IMHO would be foolish, as the Franchise tag could/should be used to retain Kampy, and the 2 Transition tags are still subject to "poison pill" tactics).

With any 2009 cap $$ TT needs to lock-up his core players, which from this topic would mean BOTH Bigby and Collins should be signed, in addition to Jolly, Chillar, and any OL's deemed retainable (Colledge, Spitz).

Apparently being smart should factor heavily into any 2010 Safety drafted, so the wonderlic scores should come into play? Atari's was a 23, Nick Collins was either an 8, 10 or 14 depending on which site you look at. Just for reference, Polamalu's was 24, Ed Reed's was 10, and Bob Sander's was 19.

Interesting stuff. Encouraging to read the stuff about Bigby being smart. And the team's confidence in the two guys.

Health, of course, is critical. The reserve safeties are not good, so hoping that Bigby and Collins stay healthy is important.

Vikings will be a test. Their ability to help in run support is of course key. But last time we had zero pass rush, and Favre carved the secondary. Hopefully with Bigby back the secondary will play better, and Capers will better scheme some way to apply at least a teensy bit of pressure. Some of the teams that have limited the vikings offense have been able to get some pressure and apply some hits on Favre to limit their passing game. Not sure whether we actually have the personnel to apply any pressure or limit the passing game for opponents who have any passing game. But the vikings game could be a good test.

In terms of blitz, do you think Collins or Bigby will themselves be used to blitz? Or maybe they just aren't that instinctive at it and they are more important in simply allowing others to do so?

Right now I'd say their importance is being assignment sure during other blitzes, patrolling the deep middle and sidelines....

The safety is one of the primary positions with Capers 3-4.....BOTH positions..........everything starts with both safetys being assigment sure and making the calls.
