Full Version: I was listening to ESPN today

So, I bought some more heart worm pills for out pups today, and tuned into ESPN to find out what was going on in the sports world. Lo and behold, someone was replaying a clip from Tedy Buschi, who was listing the faults of a specific NFC fanchise.

His complaints follow (not in the order he put them in):

1. Bad coaching.
2. As a result, too many penalties.
3. An uninspired team.
4. A bad running game.
5 A poor offensive line.

Bruschi was of course talking about the Dallas Cowboys. Surprise! I was! I thought he was talking about the Packers. It should be an interesting matchup when these two teams play at Lambeau. Personally, I favor the Cowboys, just because of recent history.

Don't worry Romo will choke just like he has all season long.

If we don't finally beat the Cowboys this year, we've got problems.
The GM
Barring us winning the division, we play many of the teams we will be in direct competion with for the wildcard.

Dallas, San Fran, Arizona.

Im thinking one wildcard will come from either Atlanta or NO, but you never know. If we dont make the playoffs, it wont be because we didnt have direct opportunities.

As of right now, I think 10-6 gets you the wild card.

Must Win Games:

Dallas
San Fran
Arizona
Chicago

Should Win Games:

Cleveland
Tampa
Seattle
Detroit

Can Go Either Way Games:

Minnesota
Baltimore
Pittsburgh

Winning against all the teams GB should beat would leave the Packers with 7 wins. Dallas is not the Dallas of old and its in Lambeau, that should be 8 wins, with the TieBreak over Dallas. The leaves 6 games up for grabs. I think GB can sneak in 2 wins out of 6 games for 10-6 and a wild card spot.

When looking at the remaining games, there's no reason the Packers should finish any less than 9-7 at worst.

Just a reminder... we're 4-2... not 2-4... as we most recently are used to starting slow and fumbling our way in (thanks Nate & Josh). To be up 2 games to .500 is a GOOD THING. We've been given time to meld, like crown and ice(as i drink to that), and after this Cleveland game the REAL season starts. The schedule has been a blessing so far, as to give us a bye when we needed it most, and give us the calm before the storm. I say, if we are not ready to battle these heinous zealots, at home more favorably and on the road as patrons of the most storied, then we are not ready to be bestowed upon us the Lombardi trophy,as its true rightful heir.

From this point on, we should be counting heads, and ours as above so below, head and shoulders. Lay it ALL on the line, neither worry about stats (we're 8th total defense), nor our pretty little ads. We need to dominate from quarter to quarter, from minute to minute, from second to second... untile FEB. As it will take that determinance to suffice the gods of football as to glance our way and give us creed in the eyes of the almighty.

Hence, do I say this... save it, save it all, for it's the playoffs I hope we meet... our bitterest rivals indiscreet, the bastard Vikings and all they represent, and chop the're motha!@#$%ing heads off!!! The SUper "BALL" will be secondary and quickly an annihilation, say whoever stands in our way, has never met this runaway train in vain... for total restitution of it's true name... TITLETOWN.

The big difference between your list for the Cowboys and how I see the packers is #3. I still believe we have a very inspired and motivated team. I've seen almost no quit or lack of effort, especiallly considering we were either a last second play or a last minute onside kick in our only two loses. Now our wins have been relatively uninspiring due to oline, running game, penalties, and coaching decisisons (and drops). But the team was in position two attempt a win in both of our loses, this fact should not be forgotten.

It will all come down to the games remaining. If we can win the next three (CLE, MIN, TB), that would put us at 7-2, have a huge win in terms of both of standings, quality oponents, and emotional toll, and to have beaten every oponent we should have beaten. This would be a great spring board into the later half of the season for either a wildcart spot and a giants-esque march through the playoffs, or better yet a division crown if MIN and #4 pull their typical late season crumbles. However, to get these next three wins and position for the rest of the season, most of those faults (penality, oline, ...) need to get shored up to atleast an average/respectable level.

Just a reminder; THE PACKERS are 3-2, not 4-2. Not sure if you are counting Cleveland as win before the game is played? I would hope not. unsure.gif

Not to be nitpicky, but we're actually 3-2. But your point still stands. We should be talking playoffs, and right now, GB would still be picked by most "experts" to make the playoffs as a wildcard. You'd think by all the negative talk around here, that we should start looking at who's projected to go in the top 5 in the draft next year. For crying out loud, can't we be happy about a blow-out win where our defense didn't give up a single point without getting all up in arms about every single flaw in their game??? I'm still hoping for the division, but they need Minny to lose a few games they're expected to win.

I don't think so. As someone already stated, one wildcard berth will likely come from the South, either the Flacons or the Saints. Probably the Falcons.

The other one is a tougher call. I think we can beat Dallas head to head and finish with the better record. But finish better than Dallas, Philly, and the Bears? Not going to happen. I say the Bears finish 11-5 and get the second wildcard spot.

Dallas has DeMarcus Ware and a pretty tough front to deal with. They also have a pretty good running game.

I think it would be an upset if we were to win that game.

I don't like the match up at all.

But, here's to hoping you are right! I'll hold up a glass of Guiness and toast you if we get by those guys. smile.gif

Dont agree. I dont think Dallas is a very good football team right now, but things change. Ware does scare me but I have not been impressed with their offense all year. The key to Dallas when they play at Lambeau is Marion Barber. They need him healthy and take the pressure off Romo

Exhibit #1:
The Packers would make the playoffs right now if the season ended today... Giants, Vikings, Saints and Niners would win their divisions, Atlanta would take the 1st wildcard spot with a 4-1 record. That leaves Eagles, Cowboys, Packers, Bears and Cards all with 3-2 records vying for the 2nd wildcard.... Cowboys & Bears would be eliminated due to being 3rd in their divisions (Bears losing head-to-head against Packers and Cowboys with a worse division record than the Eagles)... so that leaves Eagles, Packers and Cards, and the tiebreaker would be the best conference record, which the Packers have at 3-1.

Exhibit #2:
The Packers are picked in "The absurdly premature playoff picture" on Yahoo Sports, which is the only weekly updated playoff picture I know of.

Exhibit #3:
Most playoff odds reports have the Packers on the bubble... sort of like this one from footballoutsiders which has the Packers at better than 50% chance of making the playoffs.

Why have so many Packer fans already written their team off??? We've been so spoiled for the last couple decades that we can't be happy about having a winning record and being in the playoff hunt (granted its still early in the season)???

Yes, if the season ended today we would be in...after playing five games. If the season ended after week 1, we would've been undefeated. Great. But looking at the remaining schedule, I still think we'll finish no better than 8-8. Even if we do manage to maintain a winning season, the Bears look like the better team, and my guess is that they'll beat us out for the wildcard spot (or the division, if Minny stumbles).

I don't think it's that we've "written them off." I'm just trying to be realistic about the team I'm watching every week. Do they look like a bad team to me? No, not really. But they don't look all that impressive, either. There are things to be encouraged about...I really like AR and think he's got a bright future if he doesn't get killed out there; Driver looks like he's not aging at all and is putting together an awesome season; our DBs are still formidable; Matthews looks like he's emerging into a valuable player, etc.

But in the end, the ramshackle offensive line, the impotent running game, our less than overwhelming performances against sub-par teams, and the inconsistent defense lead many--myself included--to think that there are too many obstacles to overcome in order for this team to compete with the likes of the Saints or the Vikings.
