That is quite a pic. Probably the only time the two men shook hands. The word was that Lombardi had no time for Curly due to his womanizing ways.....or something to that effect. Just thought i'de elaborate since your gonna hang it in the Packer room. Nice to have stories to go with pics.

Also that Lombardi never liked naming the stadium after Lambau also.

Not to open a can of worms, but I really would have loved to see how Lombardi would have handled the Favre situation.

And yet he absolutely adored Paul Hornung. Go figure.

Neither did Lambeau... he wouldn't allow the packers to name anything after him. They had to wait til he died before his family allowed the Packers to re-name the stadium.

My guess, he would have been on a different team six years ago when the word retirement first came out of his mouth.

I think the photo in question was the cover of a Packers game day program (or media guide?) from the 1960's. That's all I got, besides the aforementioned story about Lombardi's dislike for Lambeau.

I learned a lot about this during this summer when I went up to Lambeau and took the Legends tour. It is the more in-depth tour that takes about 2 1/2 hours instead of the regular one.

In the late 1940's Lambeau tried to buy back all of the shares of stock that the Packers had sold to the public. The Board of directors would not sell them back to him or allow him to purchase any. He became very upset with the Packers and wanted nothing to do with them. He resigned in 1950 to go to the Chicago Cardinals and became VP and Head Coach.

He hated the Packers so much, he never wanted to step foot in Green Bay again. He was in Green Bay for being inducted into the Wisconsin Hall of Fame in 1962. It was about this same time that Lombardi didn't want anything to do with Lambeau either. They were asked multiple times to pose and one or the other would refuse.

That one shot is (I think) the only one of them together. Curly would not let them name anything after himself, as he wanted nothing to do with the town of Green Bay.

Fast Forward to 1965. Lambeau died on June 1st and the Packers (Art Daly specifically) decided to put that picture on the 1965 yearbook instead of the picture of Tom Moore that was originally scheduled.

Lombardi was furious. His exact words were "What do you mean putting me on the cover with him?" After he said "that was the worst yearbook you ever put out," the phone clicked. Lombardi had hung up on Art. Lombardi was so upset that he didn't talk to Art for most of the first half of the season.

Anyway, bottom line is that the Lambeau hated Green Bay when he left in 1950, and Lombardi hated Lambeau. It's a shock that picture ever was taken.

Interesting side note. Lambeau left because the Board of Directors wouldn't let him buy stock back to become owner of the team. Lombardi left for the same reason.

For Independence Day, we are presenting the 1965 edition of the Green Bay Packers Yearbook. On the cover is a photo of two legends in Green Bay — Curly Lambeau and Vince Lombardi. The story behind the cover is very interesting and often-told. Art Daley, sportswriter for the Green Bay Press-Gazette and publisher of the Yearbook, decided to use this photo against the wishes of Lombardi. We don’t recall the circumstances of why the image was taken in the first place, but after Daley went ahead and used it on the cover, Lombardi was so incensed that he refused to speak to Daley for months.

It seems that the issue might have been that the straight-laced “God, Family, and the Green Bay Packers” head coach/general manager did not like to share the spotlight with the former coach known for his drinking and womanizing. Also at issue was the fact that Green Bay’s “City Stadium” had recently been renamed “Lambeau Field” prior to the 1965 season. Lombardi, whose ego was not small, was thought to have wanted the stadium named in his honor after he was done coaching the Packer teams to world championships. Whatever the case, after not speaking to Daley for months, he eventually came up to Daley one day and said, “I can’t keep being mad at you.”

This image is probably high enough resolution to get a small poster if you print it out... not sure about legality/copyright involved with printing it yourself.

He left and went to join the Redskins on his own free will. Lombardi would have loved Favre imo. Tough, team player.
