The timing is interesting. I think Thompson was hoping to swing a trade for somebody, but wasn't able to seal the deal, so Green was the backup plan.

I am not that old school, but there always seemed like there was some justice in him not passing Jim Taylor's career rushing total. 45 yards to tie him. I am not sure he will get 45 yards.

Can't say I'm overly excited about this news. I heard they were working him out along with Rhodes. Of course, I'm not overly excited about seeing Grant or Jackson run again either, so what can it hurt? It sure was fun watching this guy run when he was in his prime. Perhaps if he can stay healthy he can contribute more than most think. He was injured most of his time in Texas.
I would just like to see him run smack over Jared Allen a couple times on Nov. 1. That would be worth the signing right there!

@Greg_A_Bedard Of course, his "actual signing" probably wouldn't happen until the morning. Packers always announce them right b4 practice.

At the least he can catch the ball, and hopefully run over some DBs. And we know he can pick up the blitz.Or used to be able to. Sounds like Wynn is the odd man out to me.

Oct 20 2009, 02:46 PM
The area I think Green can help immensely is on 3rd downs. We just don't have a guy who can both catch the ball and pick up blitzes. Jackson is a good receiver and can make some plays with the ball in his hands but he completely wiffs on blitzes sometimes. I was hoping Wynn could fulfill that role but he just can't stay healthy. We need an experienced RB that can pick up the blitz. We need more RBs period so this isn't too bad of a signing. Who knows if its for real though. I think Green can fulfill a role similar to Edgerrin James with Arizona last year.

Interesting, I'm surprised. If Ahman is healthy and still has some instincts what can it hurt? I hope he holds onto the ball better these days.

I don't even know what to say. How bad has it gotten when you pick up a player that hasn't played in a year?
I really liked Green but it's sad to think he is our best available option. I remember just 2 months ago people were talking about how deep we were at running back and who would be cut. Our number 1 is at best a 3 on most teams and our backups are nearly unplayable. Why can't they cut Jackson and Wynn and at least save on the tape and trainer time?
I would rather they tried working with Lumpkin.

For some reason the Packers are always lazy in making their player signing annoucenments. Remember McCarthy talked like Tauscher was already back, but the team didn't announce the move for a few days.
I remember reading somewhere that Bennett really liked Wynn for some reason. Not sure if this has anything to do with that or not. Not sure what Wynn has showed to get that kind of faith from any of the coaches not that Green would be much better either.

Oct 20 2009, 03:58 PM
I'm surprised some people don't like this move.
Sure he may be 32 years old, but who knows? He may be able to provide some sort of spark. Wynn sure as hell wasn't providing that spark. What makes Green any worse?
Another thing is that Green based part of his career on catching the ball. NONE of our RB's can do that. Yes, he probably can't even sniff his former career. But, considering that they gave him a try-out, they must of seen something.
So I'm going to remain optimistic here and hope Green can come in as a decent #2 RB.
He probably isn't as fast. And he probably doesn't have the brute strength he had in his prime.
BUT, that excellent vision he showed, I think is something that will never leave you. He will bring something.
I really believe he'll be able to contribute something to this team.
And hopefully, Green can get those last few yards he needs to break the record. Always wanted to see him do it!

Don't know what to say about this.
Pluses: A veteran who won' t make mistakes, can catch the ball, and pick up blitzes
Minuses: What I saw of Green in Houston was not anywhere near what he was in GB in his prime. And in fact, in his last year in GB, he was not what he was. Yet he endured two more injuries down there.
The worst of it though is this: It reveals TT's same overestimation of his personnel that the OT dilemma did. TT thought that Colledge could play LT and then slide everyone down. Wrongo.
Now he thought that 1.) Grant was an every down and versatile back, and 2.) Jackson and Wynn would suffice as reliable depth. Wrong again!
Isn't over four years enough for on the job training?

While I'm not going to say that signing Green will solve the team's problem running the ball or converting 3rd downs, there's a number of players who've gone on to play just fine after spending a year out of football. I'm mostly concerned about how his knees check out. I know that he can run and catch and be a team leader. I don't know if he can stay healthy for the rest of the season. If anything, maybe he can teach Ryan Grant a thing or two about running people over and breaking tackles. I won't complain if they bring Batman back to the team. It will make my wife happy. He was one of her favorite players when he was with the Packers.

I would let the trainers decide if his knees are bad or not. Im almost positive they know what they are doing.
Besides that we arent looking to make him the #1 back. Its not like we have to rely on him for 25 carries a game.

I for one would love this move
With his power and his speed he is the last running back we had that was any good In the last 10 years ( with speed )
I am sure they tested the knees If close to 90 percent
He is better than anything we got now
We don't have a rb who can hit a hole and take it the distance at least outrun anyone
Who know
Remember Driver is 2 years older And look at the year he is having
What do you have to lose ?????

Driver maybe 2 years older but he isnt getting hit by 300 lbs ever time he touches the ball.
Green will be our 3rd down back that will catch and protect. Like he probably should of been for the last couple of years.
Hopefully he can help the protection and screen game.

Exactly. We aren't counting on this guy to be our #1 back. He will simply provide depth and maybe be used to catch some passes and pick up blitzes. Ryan Grant can be decent at picking up blitzes but can't catch the ball. Jackson is a very good receiver but just can't pick up a blitz and usually lets Rodgers get creamed by a LB or DB. Wynn just can't stay healthy. This signing certainly can't hurt.

If Ahman does return to the Packers it's interesting to note that he is currently 45 yards behind Jimmy Taylor for the All Time Rushing record !! Taylor racked up 8,207 yards during his career as a GBP and Ahman currently is second with 8,162 yards . Maybe a second " All Time " Record will fall this Season !!!

Yes. Ed West pointed that out in this thread. Kinda have mixed feelings about that record falling. Driver replacing Sharpe who threatened to hold out before a season opener was great. I loved Green, but Jim Taylor he was the man.

A player on the scrap heap that hasn't played in a year is better than anyone we have behind Grant! What does that say for this team?! LMFAO! Yikes.
