Now, sending five draft picks for Herschel Walker, when the Vikings believed they were only a good RB away from a SB) made some sort of sense. Both players were busts on their new teams. Hadl retired; Walker returned to the Cowboys, and was still unimpressive. Which team got hosed more? I would vote the Packers got taken big time by the Chargers. And that trade, by Dan Devine (I believe) set the franchise back years.
Well, it wasn't just five picks for Walker.
Minny ended up trading the following for Walker:
Five players
PLUS
Three first round picks
Three second round picks
A third rounder
A sixth rounder
Minny got Walker, and four picks.
Which were:
Two thirds
One fifth
One tenth.
Clearly, that was highway robbery. Eight picks and five players? I would not have given that much up for Jimmy Brown, let alone Walker.
The Hadl trade was:
Two number ones
Two number twos
A third.
I think the Walker trade was worse. It literally brought Dallas from being one of the worst teams in the NFL to being the best overall team of the nineties. And it did nothing for Minny since they never figured out how to use Walker.
