If left tackle Chad Clifton can’t play this week — and indications are he can — the Packers probably won’t move Daryn Colledge from his left guard spot like they have the last 2½ games.

Rookie T.J. Lang got all the backup reps at left tackle on Wednesday and appears to be McCarthy’s top choice to back up Clifton. He replaced Colledge late in the Packers’ loss at Minnesota and though he gave up a sack to Jared Allen, performed well.

“He’s a viable option at left tackle just as much as I am,” said Colledge, who injured his knee against the Vikings and will wear a brace this week. “It would be a great opportunity if he had to step in, God forbid Chad would go down again, and we’re able to keep some solidarity on the offensive line.”

I like this -- hopefully Clifton will be able to play and perform at a high level, but I'm glad they saw enough in Lang to give him a shot if Clifton can't perform instead of moving Colledge over again (which obviously isn't a good solution).

Let's hope it doesn't come to that, but if it does let's hope the kid can take advantage of the opportunity.

Lang is a better option at LT than Colledge, today, tomorrow, or next year. I had thought when Colledge was drafted that he might one day take over for Clifton, but he has proven he belongs in the NFL, as a Guard only. What little we saw from Lang against MIN was encouraging. If I'm not mistaken, on his first snap versus Allen he punched him and Allen dod not like it. Of course Allen did get a sack versus Lang, but that was one of the 4 (of 8) where Rodgers held the ball too long.

The sack Lang gave up wasn't on Rodgers. Lang barely touched Allen on a stutter move.

I've always viewed Lang as a better Guard than Tackle (better than Colledge at that position, too) so I'm not sure he's a long term solution, but could be a nice stop gap or backup for Cliffy.

Yes, he would make a better Guard, IMO. But we are in dire need of a long term solution at that position.

MM knows offensive line talent, you need to trust him. It didn't take Coston or Barbre long to be all-pro, rest easy guys MM is on the job with pad level and fundamentals. laugh.gif

I was going of what I recall reading or hearing about the sack Lang gave up... you may be right.

Lang can play LT in the NFL.

I think he just might be able to as well.

I only corrected you because the blame is getting tossed around for the sacks on both sides so I figured we might as well toss it around accurately. The MJS had a good article about it yesterday in fact.

from Packer Update;

Philbin blames Rodgers for less than 5 of the 20 sacks allowed... http://www.espnmilwaukee.com/blogs/jason.php..

Allen's sack against Lang was a veteran move against a rookie. Allen backed off like to stunt or drop back, Kevin Williams came to Lang's side, Lang saw Allen leave, stepped towards Williams and when he stepped Allen sprinted around him for the sack. A veteran move from a good player against a rookie. When the actually locked up, Lang did exceptionally well, which is why Allen saw he need to out smart Lang instead of just out play him. TJ will learn as he gets more experience.

Tell that to Chad Clifton and his poor play this season when he has been on the field. Clifton is becoming an automatic door to the QB when he can remeber when to move with the snap.
