One thing that just absolutely KILLS me is when I see teams try to score inside the 10 yard-line out of the shotgun.
You might as well put up one of those blinking NEON signs on the sideline that says "PASS PLAY" on it.
My problem is that when the D knows exactly what you're running that close to the goal-line, the lineman can rush up the field without worrying about the run at all (which always leads to a solid pass rush), and the rest of the D sits back in a zone and covers the whole 15 yards that they need to cover the end zone, making it damn near impossible to score.
The only time this play EVER works is if the play breaks down, the QB scrambles around, and the defenders leave their assignments to cover the broken play.
I would rather run the ball 4 straight times or get snuffed on a QB sneak than basically tell the defense what we're trying to do.
Your best bet of scoring in the redzone is 1a. running the ball (which we can't do) or 1b. at least giving off the impression you'd run it so-as to set-up the play action.
It's basically 7 guys guarding 15 yards (or less) vs. 4 guys trying to get open. Add in our offensive line woes and that
formation is just a fail waiting to happen.
