Full Version: Tonight's game should end the Favre vs. Rodgers talk

What you saw out there tonight were two good quarterbacks. Favre still has it. Rodgers, even with all the pressure flowing through our porous O-line, lit it up. I'd go as far to say that if Favre played behind our O-line he would have been sacked another 1/2 dozen times because he has no mobility. The difference is that Favre has one, maybe two, years left in him. Rodgers could play another 10-15 if he doesn't get killed. Favre is a good fit for the Vikes because they are built to win now. Rodgers is young and has the time to grow with the team - a talented group that has a lot of potential but isn't quite there yet. Get the O-line together, more time in the 3-4, and this team is going to be scary in another year or two.

Anyone questioning McCarthy and Thompson's move to go with Rodgers over Favre should now give it a rest.

Good game by both QB's. AR, with protection, will blossom before our eyes. Favre will continue to do what he does. Pack needs to focus on the big picture and look to clean up the problems within. They take care of those problems, the sky is the limit.

The old man played well tonight, but I've never heard anyone say he doesn't still have it. The criticism I've heard, which I buy into, is that he doesn't have enough in the tank for an entire season anymore.

If you can't go 16 games, you don't belong in the NFL -- the goal of any team should be to go to the Superbowl, not to just start strong and maybe back into the playoffs.

I'll say. He's doing it without protection...

I agree with the thrust of your post but not this. Rodgers clearly doesn't yet have the feel for pressure that Favre has acquired over the years. Hopefully it will come with time — Rodgers is by all accounts an outstanding learner — but his pocket awareness is still immature. Naturally, the line isn't helping either (and the receivers aren't getting separation like they were in 2007).

Say want you want but its week 4. Favre will start to fall apart around week 10 this season. He does not have 1 -2 years left. Minus last night he has been kissing turf week in and week out. We just showed the league how to stop Adrian Peterson (55yds). Its a long season.

yes they did show on how to Stop AP... So can Favre have 12 more games like last night.... and oh Yeah maybe Favre can be with the coaches all week long to tell them all the inside information on the 11 other teams....

As much as I hate to say it Favre will play just fine this season with the Vikings.

Three reasons why; he has Peterson, a decent offensive line, and the team plays in a dome.

Peterson was held to 55 Yards.. Favre p[layed out of his mind... we know he has those games but can he play that way against the likes of the D of Chicago, Balt, Pitts, Giants, Cards , and even the Panthers.....We gave them the playbook on how to stop AP....

Sorry I have to disagree.

Almost any DC in the NFL can stop any running back if you commit 100% to it, unfortunetly it opens up other areas to big holes in your defense. Most don't do it becasue of that reason, it doesn't work when the other team has a good smart QB. It is a well known fact that a great running game makes QBs look great.

Ol' boy can still sling it. Turns out, so can the young lion. We should just feel fortunate to have had both on our team over the course of the last 17 years.

Someday they're going to put a decent offensive line in front of this young man and he's going to be fantastic. While Favre succeeded in getting his grudge win against the Packers, there's no doubt they did the right thing in rolling with Rodgers, and really no knowledgable fan can dispute that. Had they caved and allowed Favre back last year, Rodgers would be a free agent after this year and Favre would be the one taking the beating behind that sieve we call an offensive line.

Rodgers is 25 years old. Favre is 40.

Of course TT and coaching staff still need to answer for that offensive line and parts of the defense.

I think people overrate the value of playing in a dome. He's not going to be in a dome for every game. And more importantly, it's his age, not the climate surrounding him, that will ultimately be Favre's downfall.

Say the dome helps somewhat and he regresses the last two games of the season instead of the last four, he's still going to be a liability come playoff time. Vikings should make the playoffs, but I think he'll screw 'em over in the end. And then what? Try it again another season? Not likely.

Ultimately, the Vikings' Favre experiment will go down as an interesting episode in football history, but one that will leave them short of reaching their ultimate goal. And then next year they'll have to perform the QB search all over again.

Don't get me wrong I don't think he has what it takes to get them to the Super Bowl, make the playoffs yes and maybe win a playoff game thats it. Yes it does help that he plays some games at his age in domes.

I agree, I was concerned about Rodgers, he has proven me wrong and I am glad he has. All I will add is this, while the decision was right to move on with Rodgers, the process was ineptly handled by all concerned. What concerns me is not the decision, but the long range planning after Packer management makes decisions. Like....Rodgers is good, but shouldn't we have a line to protect him? Or, what do we do if Farve wants to unretire. Or lets take a pro bowl def end that has over 30 sacks and make him a linebacker and put him in pass coverage.
