Much better effort and focus this week. Had a few good drives, defense played better, and we cut down on the penalties, it wasnt pretty but its a "W".

Johnny Jolly is playing this year like a man possessed. Great game and effort.

No excuses for Chillar getting beat just before halftime. :08 seconds left, where do you think they are going??????

Great one handed catch by Driver.

I remember a guy who used to play for the Packers named Greg Jennings, whatever happened to him???

I saw a couple of Ryan Grant runs today that looked like how he used to run.

Jordy Nelson has dropped more balls this year than he did all of last year.

The Packer offense has become too vanilla, too predictable. I about fell out of my chair when they ran that end around to Driver.

My hunch is Jermicheal Finley will be unveiled next Monday Night.

Enough dancing Will Blackmon, get up the field.

I love watching Charles Woodson play.

I didnt see too many injuries for the Packers this week, gonna need everyone next week.

I hope Rodgers goes in calm, you know Favre is going to be nervous for the first few series. Need to take advantage of that.

Dont see anything that I disagree with.

The Packers O has been vanilla back to last year.

also agree,but isn't 103 yds for Jenning's enough?

Normally I would agree but it was 2 long catches and other then that he was shut down.

Well, Rodgers only threw 23 passes, and completed 13 of them. If you pay extra attention to Jennings, that opens up the game for the rest of the receivers. Now, if GB's receivers could learn to not drop the ball so many times, it probably wouldn't be much of a discussion here.

Youre right. It wouldnt be so much of a discussion but ONLY if he was not held to 0 catches last week.

When a #1 guy is averaging 2.5 catches a game so far this year it makes me wonder.

I haven't replayed the game yet, but from what I saw from the O-line today was mostly bad.

As anyone knows, I'm the line's biggest criticizer.

In the 1st quarter I saw Colledge and Barbre get beat repeatedly. Obviously as history shows us, Colledge is a better guard then tackle. I remember in the off-season McCarthy said he wasn't going to shuffle the line like last year and just put in the next guy. But he's doing it again and it's not working.

How are young lineman supposed to progress when they keep getting shuffled to a new position? Maybe Lang should be getting playing time?

Anyways, Jason Spitz is obviously better at center then Wells (even though that's not saying much). I don't think I saw Wells give up any sacks, but I saw him let quite of a few guys by him to pressure Rodgers. Again, I'll have to replay it, but when Rams blitzed 2 up the middle, it looked like both of them went right by him.

Sitton and Spitz were also allowing pressures on Rodgers as well.

That was just in the 1st quarter. Now in the remaining 3 quarters they looked better. I'll have to replay it but I think it was mostly due because of the play-calling.

Packers continued to run the ball and even though Grant wasn't getting any good holes and made by with what he had, it looked like they established a somewhat, effective play-action because of it. So I don't think the Packers line were tested much because of it. But I'll give credit where credit's due, they played better then when they came out in the 1st quarter. But it was mostly because of the play-calling, with either run plays or play-action/roll-out passing plays.

Yep, I'm also concerned about all of our WR's. Its a "supposed" strength of our team. Jennings hasnt been involved lately, and Nelson and Jones get minimal playing time. Im wondering if the Packers plan on spreading the Vikes out so they havent used multiple WR's sets as much this year so far. I hope they have something planned because I dont think we'll win a slugfest with our OL.

Wow. Lets look at your arguments.

Johnny Jolly is playing in a contract year. Of course he is putting in extrea effort!

Chillar against a WR? No contest. Chillar loses.

I believe Jennings had over 100 yards receiving today.

Grant ran well at the end of the game, when the Rams were playing defense. He ran hard, but not effecitvely. I believe Steven Jackson is a FA next year.

Nelson caught some catches for positive yards this week. The entire receiving corps was a "dropsy" group the last two weeks, but have seemed to have reformed this week.

Too vanilla? What with long passes and the end around, the Packers did try to establish the running game (though they couldn't), which is why the possible FA of Jackson becomes more important) Grant, or the the OL is not the answer. Though, are you going to tell me the Rams OL is superior to the Packers?

Lets hope Jermichael Finley will indeed shine against the Vikings. However, with that formidable defensive front line for the Vikings, and the informadable OL of the Packers, I don't believe Finley will do anything more than block.

Blackmon has either been hurt or ineffective on returns. Why keep him around?

Finally, Favre will be nervous? Why? He's facing a team he knows inside and out. An offensive scheme he knows inside and out. I'm more afraid that the Packers will more concentrated on not letting Favre "show them up" than winning the game. I'm talking particularly about Woodson and Harris, both vets like Favre. Both full of pride, both drooling to get a "pick six".

Jolly is in a contract year. No need to explain anymore on why he is playing so well this year.

Actually Chillar was beaten both times by a lumbering, 6'3" 265 lb tight end who I believe was an undrafted free agent.

I could see that!

The 49ers TE did very well against their defense.

Let's hear it for John Kuhn...2 TD's today!

And I loved the call for the quick hitter to the FB on that TD run..the replay was almost funny to watch, the way the Rams all were keying on Ryan Grant even after Kuhn was celebrating in the end zone.

Even though Rodgers didn't have a high completion percentage, he didn't really come close to any interceptions, and boy...he almost hit on a few more big plays. Throw in all he does with his feet...we're pretty lucky to have this guy.

One thing I really wish this team had is a speedy, sure-handed third down back-type. I like DeShawn Wynn, but he's not that much of a change of pace from Grant, and he hasn't been particularly effective in the few touches he's had anyway. I'm not sure Tyrell Sutton would have been the answer, but this is an area that I think can be addressed.

The O-Line started out badly, but turned it on as the game went on. Even so, we're talking about the Rams here, and I'm worried about how they'll handle playing the big boys...starting with the Vikings next week.

Fewer egregious penalties...I was happy with that.

Hey...this was a win on the road. A home opener, at that. I know the Rams aren't good, but they are still a professional team and they were playing to win too.
goyotes22
Agreed about Blackmon. However, he is a danger to break it whenever he gets his hands on the ball which is why you would keep him around. One big return can swing a close game and guys like Blackmon are not dime a dozen.

This was a good road win for a team that needed some confidence and success after last week (although maybe the Bengals aren't as bad as originally thought). If nothing else there is something to build on and there were apparently no injuries.
the monkey soul
I don't understand why this offense is called vanilla. There's so much pre-snap movement, so many different formations, and so many different elements for a particular play.
Gregg
I was not really impressed by anything today.

Remember, the Rams are one of the worst teams in the NFL.

And even at that, during the game they lost their best WR, their starting QB, and a starting safety. Despite that, they were in the game through most of the third quarter. And they had more turnovers than we did also. YOu have to factor in things like that, or you make judgments in a vacuum. zEven with a coach like Steve S. He does not have the Dline to implement his attack type of defense.

The more I look at the Packers, they have serious shortcomings in the OL and at RB. Plus Finley has yet to become what I thought he was.

On defense, so far the front seven has been average. They gave up a lot of yards and first downs today to a mediocre QB with no receiving corps or TE. Think about that.

Because next week it will be different.

The more I look at this team and the schedule, its an 8-8 team. And I would actually be happy with that. TT needs to get a blue chipper in the OL, and a red chip RB.
Arrigo
After watching the tape (DVR of the game) Colledge got A LOT better after the 1st quarter. He seemed to settle down a bit.

Jennings reagrovated his wrist injury. I think this will be a lingering injury for him (but that bye week will help). I think that the staff will use the Viking game to really use him and Finley.

Grant needs to run with a purpose.

I would love to see a 3rd down back like Leon Washington or Darryn Sproles added. Sutton wasn't that type, but a few to watch (for next year) is Joe McNight, Jahvid Best, MiQuale Lewis and Demarco Murray.

Driver is still a guy teams have to game plan for.

Charles Woodson may be in the argument for the best CB in Packers history. What a great signing by Thompson.

Jolly is playing for a contract (and his freedom).

Kampman seems to be getting comfertable in the 3-4.

I think Dom Capers will use 100% of his playbook this week. I think we will see more blitzes and more pressure on Favre.

The play calling needs to get better. McCarthy is keeping it "vanilla" but it is time to get creative.
Vots
I just finished replaying the game and I wouldn't give Colledge to much credit.

In the 1st quarter, I wanted to gouge out my eyeballs watching that horrid RUN and PASS protection.

In the 2nd/3rd/4th quarters the offensive line certainly looked better. But, the offense did a very good job on selling those play-action fakes. The whole Rams defense were following Grant every time. This gave Rodgers plenty of time to throw the ball. Also, McCarthy called a few QB roll outs (some mixed in with the PA calls) which also helped keep Rodgers safe.

Other then that, McCarthy didn't give the O-line to much of a chance to fail really. Roll outs and play-action plays like I mentioned earlier. All of the successful plays were coming off of those calls. Plays where the O-line actually had to step up and protect, not that good. And also lots of running plays kept the defense from totally looking for the pass.

Which leads me to another thing. I would not be discrediting Ryan Grant or any other of the runners here for not having a productive season. There's nowhere for these guys to run. When Grant or anybody else gets the ball, it looks like they're headed for a wall, LITERALLY.

There is only one problem with this offense and it's the offensive line. It's a domino effect. Rodgers is constantly under pressure, receivers can't complete their routes (I saw a couple times where Rodgers had to dump it off because of instant pressure when he was obviously waiting for a receiver down field), we can't get solid runs and plays can't develop.

As far as Jennings? Who cares if he only got 2 receptions?! First he really wasn't targeted that much but for the 2 grabs he had, over 100 YARDS. I don't care if he gets 100 yards on 5 receptions or 100 yards on 1 reception. I was perfectly happy with him today. He came in and did what he was paid to do, make big plays. He made 2 of them. Be happy!

That is good to know really. As much as people want his head for a "vanilla offense", I think they would be wanting it more if we continued to give up 2 sacks a quarter.

Yeah, I'll take 100 yards from a WR any day and (hopefully) twice on Monday.

In the last few seasons Favre has had problems in big games. He gets amped up and if we can bring any pressure at all he is prone to toss it up for grabs. I'll never forget how woeful he was that Monday night when Holmgren came back to Lambeau as Seattle's GM & HC. In 2007 he went down to Dallas and stunk out the joint yet again. This coming game is one he's been waiting for for years. He is eager to exact his revenge on TT and MM. He'll be nervous and excited and we should use that to our advantage.
JASIII
Throughout his career, Favre has a tendency to come out too hyped up and throw inaccurately. Remember the mid 90's in Dallas? It's nothing new. LeRoy Butler's column on JSonline has a good take on how to gameplan for Favre:

Although it's obviously still a work in progress, the 3-4 is something that Favre has always had trouble with.

I'm glad someone else here is noticing that. Grant is not the greatest running back in NFL history but only a few of those would be able to do anything with the way this line run-blocks. There's someone 3 yards in the backfield on probably 3/4's of the running plays. Sad thing is it's probably an improvement over last year, when I recall Grant getting met in the backfield for a 5 yard loss like clockwork once or twice a game because Colledge or someone got bowled over. Unfortunately, like in '07, I think the pass game is going to have to set up the run game for it to be successful.

I'm not gonna count on Favre being nervous. If we're using that as an adavantage, we're dead.

His documented nevousness is taken into account but; Somehow I think this emtional game will be more satisfying for Brett and his propencity for being over hyped will not be a major factor.

In three games, Favre has only 1 Int and NO fumbles lost. While he has not thrown the ball a lot, he has taken care of it and he has been sacked quite a bit... Rodgers has been exceptional with the ball as well. Neither of these two QBs will keep it up. Favre is more likely to have more INTs this season than Rodgers, but in any given Sunday....

Can't wait for another victory over the Viks, that said I am more concern about Peterson and F Taylor (Rushing game), than I am concern about Brett threat. Stop the run and Brett will give us the ball. Packer 27-24
