Per Greg Bedard on Twitter.

Kinda sucks.

EDIT: by the Bills
Lambeau5
With the injury to Clifton and this guys presumed potential how do we let him leave?
Is it a case where Meredith has the option to go to Buffalo even if the Packers were to counter offer?
rpiotr01
Not sure. I always thought GB had the option to put him on the active roster before he was signed by someone else.

EDIT: From Bedard's tweets with others it sounds like it's a done deal, he's gone. That really really sucks. But at least we have the dynamic duo of Korey Hall and John Kuhn leading the way for the number one rushing unit in the league... oh wait. Nevermind. Well at least our special teams is second to none with those two! Wait again, scratch that.

What a waste. Back to the drawing board at LT. Not a single prospect on the roster. That's raw.

Ya - this is a big head-scratcher. He might not have been, "ready" this season yet, but he looked to have great potential.
RobertGoulet
Yeah but at least we still have Justin Harrell and Jarrett Bush!!!

Maybe they have plans for TJ Lang to move over. Still a head scratcher though.

This season is really starting out with a thunderous dud.

PS players are complete FAs. The teams they are on the PS of have no rights to them whatsoever. They may have some wink-wink agreements ("Tell us if you are going to sign with someone else and we'll see if we can get you on our roster"), but a player on the PS might hold some bitterness about not being on the roster in first place--so it might work for or against you.

Its a longshot he ever even gets a start in the NFL. The guy is raw and apparently doesn't have the attitude you'd want.

You may be thinking of last year, when Miami wanted to sign Lansanah to their 53, and Lansanah gave GB the chance to sign him to the Pack's 53.

Regarding your edits, not sure what that has to do with losing Meredith??? There's no way he could have started this year. Colledge is better than Meredith, but that isn't saying much... If we lost Colledge, we're in a world of hurt.
dabeene1
They wouldnt even let him play much in preseason. Whenever it was over 80 degrees, he would drop out of practice. He showed nothing in the few preseason snaps he got. The only reason anybody likes him is because he was rated (and badly) as a second round pick.

I say he was rated badly because even though they thought he was worth a second, 32 pro teams disagreed... and all 32 passed on him a second time when he hit waivers.

what have we lost? the pick we wasted on him.

Man, considering how much Ted likes his draft picks they really must not have been too high on Meredith.

Silverstein called him raw as sushi- I really like that line- and there was no way they were counting on him for this season just like they have Underwood for the future not for this season. If they were high on him they would have offered him a spot on the active roster when Buffalo came courting.

But Clifton is a FA after this season, as is Colledge plus Clifton is banged up. They have to be really lucky to get a rookie next year who can step in- Will they try to get Tony Moll back after the season? ( that wasn't a serious remark)

By the way the Bears I think it was, put in a claim on Hassleback when he was on the PS. He wisely said, thanks but no thanks.

Correct, dabeene1. He was worth a 5th rounder to see what he had, which obviously wasn't too much.

MM needs to hire ANY offensive line coach that can spot and develop talent, and hire him. Clifton is on fumes, and he's by far the only OL capable of playing LT... Colledge tries in spot duty, but won't cut it at LT.

Breno? Lang? Time to start pilfering from somebody else's PS and find/develop a prospect. Colledge needs to move back inside, for good.

I don't really see that. I see Colledge eventually moving over and Lang starting at LG. I think Colledge could be a solid LT if he practiced at the position. He was a highly regarded LT prospect coming out of Boise State. He was probably the best pass protecting OT of the entire draft. He just needed to work on his run blocking. I think spending a few years on the interior helped him in that regard. I think if he practiced at LT the next offseason he would be pretty solid. When you really think about it, the reason why Colledge initially struggled at LG was because he was a guy not known for his run blocking skills in college that was placed in a position where run blocking is very important. You just aren't going to see instant results from that. I think Colledge is eventually the next LT but they can't just have a 2nd rounder sitting on the bench until Clifton is gone. Unless we draft an OT in the 1st or 2nd round next year, Colledge is our ONLY OPTION at LT. There simply isn't anybody else. I also don't see Thompson re-signing Clifton. If Colledge plays solid at LT in Clifton's absence the next few weeks then I would have to say he is our future LT. We can't really judge College on Sunday's performance. He was injured playing at a position he hasn't practiced at. Heck, he missed practice at his own position.

Make no mistake, this shows some real bad contingency planning on TT's part.

It is hard to believe that there was no pure back up LT on the roster. But now, there is none on the practice squad either.

So if Colledge goes down, what is the plan? Lang? Giacomini? Are you serious?

And if Colledge is the long term answer for Clifton, then TT is a mediocre GM, at best. Because Colledge will never be anything more than average there, if that.

To think, he could have had Jared Geathers for a number four.

Gregg, I'm not following your logic here. The contingency plan was Colledge as Cliffy's backup and Meredith as the developmental prospect on the PS. Colledge did OK when that plan had to be enacted before.

We spent a draft pick on a pure LT, who was seen as good value in the 5th round. Why would a fourth rounder be a different approach?

Dane Randolph was signed to the PS to replace Meredith. Another raw guy.

I don't think Colledge is a LT because he doesn't project well there with his measurables. MM has said time and time again that they see Colledge as a guard. So, I don't think the Packer see his as a long-term LT solution. I agree we will be in huge trouble if Colledge goes down. Hopefully Cliffy isn't out long.

One last thing - I feel really, really, really bad for Spitz. He keeps getting moved around. I thought that MM had said they would not shuffle, and figured Spitz would stay at C and Lang will fill in for Colledge who moved over. Why get worse at three spots than two??? MM is starting to wear thin on me...
Terry
Meredith liked his chances with the Bills better, what with their tackle out for the season. He felt it was the best opportunity for playing time. One cannot fault him for that, so I just wish him luck.
