There are whispers out of Pittsburgh that they may be letting go of Casey Hampton. It's hard to think that TT wouldn't at least be interested. They keep saying that they think Pickett fits the bill at DT, but Hampton has been a stud 3-4 nose tackle on a championship team.

If I recall correctly, he'll be a free agent next year. I can't imagine that they would sign him to a long term contract for big dollars, especially since they just drafted Raji. But he might be useful as a guy to learn from for a year.

Interesting to think about, at least.

Is he the guy who took Carson Palmer's knee out?

I think there is less a chance of Hampton playing for the Packers this year than there is of Favre playing for them.
Dick LeBeau just laughed when he was asked about Casey being released. Pittsburgh just added in a new wrinkle to their defense to use Hampton on 3rd downs where before he used to come off the fields on 3rd down. He is only making about 3 Million dollars and is one of the best NT's in the league. Unlike last year, Hampton showed up at his proper weight and has started all the preseason games. He is in the last year of his contract, but that doesn't mean anything. Pittsburgh usually lets guys play them out and then leave or they re-sign them. Nothing more. Those "whispers" are from a media person (La Canfora) just trying to stir up something. There is no smoke, just someone trying to break wind.

Here's a good article that points out a lot of the flaws in the original "whispers".

#1. He's not being released or traded..... this year.
#2. There is no way the Packers would sign him, if he was a FA.

They won't trade or cut him this year. He might end up hitting free agency next year, but that would be because he's getting up there in age and is less effective. I'd much rather see the Packers go after a young NT prospect with some upside to backup Pickett and split time with Raji. The Redskins seem to have some good DL depth this year. Anthony Montgomery is a very intriguing prospect at 6'6" 330 lbs (yeah right) and only 25 years old. It might be worth checking out.
