Good thread philh64. Well thought out. Nice link. These might be the most intelligent posts you've added to this forum in years. biggrin.gif

I agree. After a long day of work, mowing can be just the kind of mental break I need. It gives me a lttle exercise and allows me to recollect on the day. Not to mention the boost in pride I get for completing a job and at least for that moment in time, I have the best looking yard on the block.

While in college I worked on the grounds crew of the university golf course. Mowing became a zen experience. Nothing beats the precision involved in mowing a green, getting that cleanup ring around the outside at the conclusion of each green as close to the fringe as you can without scalping it....

I've evolved to landscaping and have (pleasantly) relinquished the mowing responsibility, lawn tractor storage & maintenance to a service. I'd worked the grasslands (paid my dues) for years and still have a large amount of brush clearing and landscaping to do, but dont regret for one moment letting someone else mow the lawn with a commercial maching in half the time it took me. Should have done it sooner.

My mower has a beer holder? How do you acheive this is somebody else mows???

Well if one has a landscaper, they could drink beer uninterrupted while the landscape mows, without the pesky steering wheel of a tractor or shoving a mower, even a shelf propelled requires attention. So this is kinda off topic Vinnie by examining the beer drinking abilities of said grass cutter. smile.gif

Don't you think it rather rude to expect the landscaper to hold one's beer? Besides, I would simply be tasked with another chore that may actually interfere with drinking responsibly.

I was so awe inspired by this post I cut my grass. It did not need it but I agree it is pure emotional escape. Anyone else carry on great conversations with themselves when they mow? I have the best conversations with me when I cut the grass it is so rewarding. I get no arguements:P

I had my coffee this morning, cut the back yard. Then breakfast and the frontyard. Followed by a few beers at the local pub. All in all a pretty good day. And yours Phil?

Not too bad. I had a few beers playing softball today, last tourney of the summer. It sure went fast. I didn't get to mow the lawn today, but hopefully if the rain holds up I will be able to tomorrow.

35 degrees for a low tonight here in Stratford. And I see what you mean tongue.gif Two more mowings I figure and I put the old Briggs and Stratton away for the year.

I would not hand a beer to a landscaper while I watched him mowing. You may end up with a zig zag pattern in your grass. As mowing supervisor it would be your responsibility to hold your own can thoughout the job. How many beers you down, what you do with the empties would require another thread. Phil may become upset turning his mowing thread into a beer while mowing thread.

Holy COW!! 35? Fall is right around the corner. I will be in Hayward Bear hunting in two weeks.

Back to the topic of the thread........I prefer to push mow my lawn because I get a good 45 minute workout in, but what do you all prefer? How many beers does your lawn take on a rider?

Thanks for the thead bye the way. 35 degrees lol. I just put my khaki shorts away in my dresser for the year. The next drawer up is the long underwear drawer, but thats another topic, soon enough. No, I use a push mower, but that got me thinking of a question for you or Luvda. My dad always taught me to run the mower dry of gas the last time, to prevent gas in the lines etc. over the winter, but my neighbor says it doesnt matter the fuel will evaporate anyway.

I don't know, I just keep the fuel in there. Never had a problem with the old Ace.

Nothing like a good lawn mowing wearing my favorite fishnet tank top, speedo, and black socks with matching zipper boots while drinking a brewski... It just doesn't get much better than that.

Actually, the guy whose service mows my lawn is my "should have been" son-in-law. A really great guy and father.
I've got 1.8 acres of land in Florida that abutts a wetlands area which is continually "spreading" and needs constant beating back. I always have a burn pile of trimmings, cuttings and/or tree limbs. My neighbor to the south has a field that runs our properly line and he decided some time back not to clear along the fenceline....much to my consternation. So his side is a thickening stand of tall weeds, vines, small trees and general mayhem that of course wants nothing more than to "spill over" into my yard. Over the course of time, I've attached it with machete and/or burned it down but I'll be damned if the stuff doesnt just grow back!

Years gone by I went the "workout" route and did the mow proper in 2+hours of sweaty determination with a self-propelled. That switched over to a rider..until finally I said the **** with it and let someone else do the enjoying.
I'm still kept quite busy with the hacking & sawing side of things...but its a good patch of ground and I've enjoyed working it.

I leave mine in year round but thats just because Im using them all year round for the most part. If there is no snow on the ground the mowers are used for leaf cleanups.

If its going to be sitting for a while though just throw some fuel stabilizer in there.

It only counts as mowing if it is with a true push mower. Most people now days just let their kids play video games or watch TV in place of spending time outside. Mowing lawn can cleanse the soul.

Obviously, lawn mowing is meant to be done by a push mower. Sheese, I assumed that was this thread was about. C'mon Phil. I need to go to the store and buy a carton of milk now. Deja vu.

You'd be shocked how many customers I have or have taken care of that have perfectly healthy teenagers but still spend the money to hire a lawn service to take care of their yard.

I can see a solid 2-3 more mowings left this season. Aerating seems to be the thing to do in the fall. Anyone believe in this, pros and cons???????

I aerate in the Fall, just before the Fall fertilizing. I believe a good Fall fertilizing is a requirement. I use the weed guard to keep the weeds at bay next year. Follow this up with a good dethaching in the Spring and another fertilizing. In the spring I tend to go with morganite, I just do not like all the pesticides and herbicides where my kids and dog play.

Sometimes I have to give a grub treatment too. I do not like to do this unless I have too because it kills the earthworms that provide natural aeration. If I do, I just throw my left over fishing crawlers in the yard.

I must admit, I've never aerated at least not to the point of prosecution. Not familar with the term, my LaCrosse friend, expound please, if this is the proper forum, of course.

I probably have 2 months of mowing left. I am starting my aeratings and overseedings next weeks though. I tell all my customers to aerate once a year. Growing grass is just like building a house. You need a good foundation and aerating makes the root system strong.

There is a lot of clay in the soil in my yard which makes keeping up my lawn challenging. I want a nice looking lawn, but it just costs so much to keep it up. Plus, one of my next door neighbors travels for work and has his lawn mowed about once a month anyways.

I was wondering what I could do to improve my lawn under the trees in my yard? I do not want to cut the trees down, but I would like the grass to grow beter under them. Is there a shade seed that actually works?

Keep aerating and use some topdressing.

You can try something called Earth Right Soil Conditioner also. Its like a liquid aearation. Its supposed to break up the clay. Ive never used it but Ive talked to people who swear by it.

Go to your local nursery and see if they have a good mixture of seed for shaded areas. I would try a fine fescue/bluegrass mixture
