Full Version: REPORT: Favre Retired: I have to ask......
PackerChatters > PackerChatters > NFL Talk > NFC North > Brett Favre Archives
The GM
The word on the street (ESPN) is that Favre has decided not to come back to the Vikings. I have to ask the question.

If Rodgers gets seriously hurt in Aug/Sept??????????????????????????

I'm fairly sure TT would bring back Bart Starr before he brought back Favre, but what would YOU do knowing your season hangs on Flynn and Brohm?
Skyshadow
Favre quit because he didn't feel like he could play adequately anymore. Seems like pretty much the beginning, middle and end of the story.
mzahn
We should start a pool for when he tries to come back again.
GBP4EVER
TT would put Justin Harrell at QB before he would bring back Favre I think.

You are very right there. And Brett wouldn't step foot into Green Bay as long as thompson is there.
LMG
Brett retired by his own volition the first time...I don't read anyone or anything else into it.

I agree, finally, and am looking foward greatly to this Packer season. I, as a huge fan of #4 am glad this story is done. Hope we can all remember his tremendous career in a positive way, and move on to cheering for The Pack, as always.

Knowing his past waffling(sp) IMO this is far from over.

Even if it is over, the media will never let it die this season. They know what stories people want to read. There will be talk about a possible come back all pre-season and regular season, especially when the starting QB from a playoff caliber team goes down (seems to happen at least once every year).
Jerry in Connecticut
He wants a superbowl. He wants to go out like Elway. If he came to camp now it would be a seven month grind.

This story is far from over. Mark my words.....and it may not be with the Vikings.
Suppose the Colts are 7-1 and Manning goes down.....
Suppose the Patriots are 6-2 and Brady reinjures himself.....
....or the Chargers....or the Saints....or the Giants....

Any team that is even close to contention that loses a quarterback.....and has salary cap space.....we are going to hear that they are talking with Brett Favre.

If Rodgers went down in game two, Favre would likely be all over the media saying he would do it for the Packers.....he would want to feel like he FORCED Thompson to take him back.

If the Vikings stumble badly early, he would love to come charging in on a white horse. He would be cutting the 7 month grind to 4.

I think there is a decent chance he will never play in the NFL again.....but I think there is a decent chance he will.

In my opinion, we have not heard the last of this.

I agree 100%, and if he comes back with anyone except the Vikings I have no problem with it. If it was on good terms with the Packers I would be ecstatic, but I don't want to see anything happen to Rodgers. I think there is a good chance we may see him on the field again depending on how he reacts to being at home in the Lazyboy watching like all the rest of us come September.

I think you are wrong, but more importantly, I HOPE you are wrong. I hope this is the last we hear of Favre coming back to play with the Vikings or with any other team.
Packfan_Euro_Trash
I could not see Favre coming back to GB because of a AR injury unless it was later in the season and GB was playing extremely well, and a record at least 2 games over .500. I personally have little regard for or against Favre anymore. Not my hero, nor is he evil guy. Still in the scenario above where the team was definitely heading to the playoffs and AR was done for the season, then for the sake of trying to win a Super Bowl I would be all for brining back #4. The reason being that I see a better chance with a 40 year old Favre than I would would the inexperienced second year Flynn or Brohm.

Best quote I've seen;

QUOTE
It's time to lay off the Packers' general manager for his controversial choice to move on without the legendary quarterback last year.

As Chargers general manager A.J. Smith put it: "The only thing I've been thinking about throughout this whole situation, is how smart Ted Thompson looks."

Best quote I've seen;

Seems like Smith has turned a potential Dynasty into just a playoff team, being so overladen with talent they couldn't help make the playoffs. Seems our Mr. Smith has some real personnel issues when it comes to selecting coaches. When the NYG trip all over themselves giving you high draft picks for Eli, it doesn't take a Genius in personnel to make hay, with the exception of Matt Millen of course. I put as much stock in Smiths opinion as I do in Francis Tarkington's

You may be right, and it won't be with the Vikings, Childress is pretty pissed!!! I love the tension brewing in Minny!!
This story from Peter King, along with Steve Mariucci's report that Favre will continue to throw and work out, has fueled quite a bit of speculation that we haven't seen the last of this quarterback. A scenario in which he approaches the Vikings down the road is unlikely but cannot be completely ruled out.

If that happens, he needs to be told just one word -- in order to keep the locker room together, in order for Brad Childress to maintain his credibility with the players, and in order for the franchise to display it has a spine.

That one word? "Nope."

Look, I wanted Favre badly. Like many others, I thought he was the missing piece of the puzzle for the Vikings. But yesterday was the point of no return for the Vikings and Favre. It's over. End of story.

If he changes his mind yet again and wants to play, it's gotta be with another team. Chilly's already dealing with a credibility crisis as he attempts to explain that he didn't really need Favre -- and if any word gets out that he might reconsider Favre, it would do permanent damage to his credibility in the locker room.

Favre can do whatever he wants, as far as I'm concerned -- but it can't involve the Vikings. If he wants to continue the waffling, more power to him. If he ultimately wants to play another season, that's certainly his right.

Just don't even think about doing it with the Minnesota Vikings.

I think the man knows more about football and running a team then anyone else who posts on this board.

I think it would apply to any current or former GM. Since none of the posters are or has been a GM I don't think we are in there level.

It does not take a GM to know a GM screwed up a team. Nobody would of been allowed to make any comments on the effectiveness of Matt Millan or any other GM for that matter. Or is commenting on the effectiveness of a GMs ability now off limits on PC ?

You can complain about them all I am saying is that they have to know more then you and me because I don't see either of us running a sports team anytime soon.

Hold on a second; I think I could take any team in the NFL to an 0-16 record as GM.

I would even venture as far to say that I could take any team in the NFL down to a sub-.500 record after four years as GM.

In fact.....the scenario where BF came back to back up Rodgers if he got hurt is actually a good way to resolve the rift between the parties. Presuming our backups show no more promise than provided last year, having Favre come back to fill in would "actualize" his own depiction of his capabilities - i.e. no longer able to go the long haul.

It wont happen, but it could actually work.

Personally, I wish he'd just retire and be done with it but since he seems unable/unwilling to do so and we're talking pure conjecture, why not go overboard with it?

JASIII
Favre has been on record as saying he will not play for the Vikes because he feels his body is not up to it. Online rumors have said that he is experiencing ankle and knee pain from the personal workouts he has been doing.

There is no possible way under any circumstances that the Packers would look to Favre to play ever again if Rodgers went down to injury. An analogy: Your 2007 BMW is totaled in a car accident. In your garage sits a 2002 Saturn and a 2003 Toyota pickup. Why on earth, instead of driving one or both of the two cars you have in the garage at home, would you try to buy back from your buddy a 1988 Porsche that you know burns oil, has bald tires and has a bad clutch, that you sold him 3 years ago?

Ohhhh, you never know. One thing I have learned about him is that I pretty much cannot believe a word he says anymore. So while he professes to have such an angst against TT, I also think he can change his mind and come back to Green Bay for whatever reason and let the past stay put.

That is exactly correct! Thanks 66_Ray!

GBP4EVER: You yourself said you don't know as much as a GM in the NFL and are not up to that level. I agree with you. You don't know as much as any GM both past and present..... However, I feel there are some people who post here that could have done better with...say, the Detroit Lions. Not to say that they could be among the better GM's in the league, but it is hard to imagine that SOMEONE here could not get a win on the board. Or make some better player moves. They seem to get it and have a better sense of what it takes to run a team and are less emotional, than say, you would be.

I was just responding to and agreeing with your self assesment. I disagree with you that others here could not have done a better job.

Nice double team you two. I'm sorry that you two Favre lovers no longer get to see your idol, but there are plenty of #4 posters you two can buy on e-bay to put on the ceiling above your bed.

Been watching the back and forth here for a couple of days and frankly am tired of the personal crap going on.

If you have a problem with someone's comments PM the person and keep it out of the thread. Bringing it here basically takes away from the original thought of the thread. Some of these off topic replies will be deleted.

You know who you are and next time we see these, some very carefully put in, personal comments attacking another member we will deal with it following our Rules & Guidelines.

To those that keep their comments civil and worth reading our apologies for putting up with those few who need to express themselves in the way they do.

There is also a chance that as he is seated on the couch watching football instead of playing it for the first time, that he pauses and reflects on his actions. This could bring him to the sad realization that perhaps TT did the best move for the Packers and that he isn't above the Packers and therefore he should not be upset with TT for doing his job.

There may be too much pride for him to publicly state that, but my opinion/respect of him would return to near pre-drama queen levels if he did.

If Rodgers were to get seriously hurt and be out for the year:

I dont think the Packers would do it, but I think Favre would seriously think about it.

"Brett, We want you to strap it on one more time in Green Bay".

1. Lambeau Field would go crazy.
2. Favre could help repair some of his legacy in GB.

I think it would very beneficial for Favre to do that, but I dont think the Packers would ask him.

Can you imagine the HEAT on Ted Thompson from the media and fans if Rodgers gets hurt bad, we are starting Matt Flynn, and Favre is sitting down in Mississippi.

I hope Rodgers makes it, but if he gets hurt , its going to be very, very awkward in GB

What would be even worse is if Rodgers does not live up to his expectations, which at this time, are very lofty.

But Favre will never again play for Green Bay, you can bet on that! smile.gif
