I've been thinking things over the last few weeks and in the back of my mind I was kind of wondering why Favre would want to continue to play. I know he has the desire to play a few more years. But think about this, his salary, endorsements, speaking engagements, etc. have got to generate alot of cash. Ironically, today the Packers indicated they only made 20 million last year. So it got me wondering, what if Favre bought the team? Is it possible? Well, I got news for you, he's got the money! If he plays two more years that just icing on the cake. Would he want to buy the team? Now think about this, don't you think he'd like to be the guy to give Ted Thompson his pink slip?

Now I know I'll get some naysayers that say, neah that could never happen. I've seen four major mergers in companies I work for that I thought would never happen that had poison pills and all sorts of clasuses and contracts in them, but they still happened.

Any thoughts about Favre owning the Packers?

well the simple reason if im not mistaken is that the packers organization is owned by stockholders not a single person who could just sell out.....

It is not possible. The Packers are owned by stockholders and do not have an owner that can sell. The Packers also have laws in place so that one person cannot own more than 30 percent of the stock, and therefore cannot even be a controlling member of the Packers. The NFL required more than 30 percent for the primary owner, so it can never happen.

Favre has as much chance of owning the Packers as I do.

Exactly. Do your homework OP. You will learn what makes Green Bay the most unique franchise in all of sports.

Even if they weren't owned by stockholders, Favre doesn't have any where close to the financial capability of being able to buy the Packers. It would to take a whole team of Brett Favre's plus a huge loan.

1. Packers are held by stockholders
2. Favre does not have over 1 billion dollars as what the team is vauled by Forbes.

I know this is a moot point in a pointless conversation but thats why people recruit investors when they make large investments. They keep 51% or more of the stock to have control and let others invest their money in it. Very rarely do you see corporations that size owned by a sole individual.
The GM
Just the thought of it turns my stomach. Can you imagine the back and forth on major decisions. The leaks from his relatives on contracts, and negotiations. It would turn one of the most prolific organizations in sports into a 24 hour Springer show.
Cant happen, wont happen, Favre doesnt have the coin, and the organization isnt laid out for it to happen.

Also, contrary to what Jomama says, I really don't think Favre has the money to buy the Packers. In 2005 the Packers were worth $849 Million. Its likely closer to one billion right now. Favre has money but not that kind of money. Most professional sports owners these days are billionares who own other businesses as well. I say that because it didn't take as much money before to buy a professional sports team. In the era of free agency player salaries are through the roof. Just because Favre got a $100 Million contract back in 2001 doesn't mean he has the money to buy an NFL team. The profits of a team are not what they are worth. Lambeau Field alone is worth more than Favre can possibly have. You really need to do your homework.
