The issue of Favre's (personal) locker room

June 18, 2009 4:01 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Kevin Seifert

We're getting a bit ahead of ourselves here. After all, it has barely been 24 hours since retired quarterback Brett Favre said he needs more progress from his surgically-repaired arm before he decides whether to play in 2009.

In an advance of that, however, one Minnesota player has already fired the first shot across Favre's bow. Appearing Thursday on ESPN's First Take, defensive end Ray Edwards said he would expect Favre to use the same locker room as every other player. Favre has drawn some criticism in the past for using a separate locker room last season with the New York Jets.

"You've got to go to war with these guys," Edwards said. "If you don't want to share a locker room with them, that's kind of b.s."

Favre had a locker assigned in the Jets' primary locker room but he actually used a nearby office.

"I wouldn't like it that much," Edwards said. "Everybody else has got to share a locker room. What makes you so different?"

Edwards made clear he would welcome Favre to Minnesota, saying: "We think it's definitely going to be a great addition to the team if he does come." But when host Dana Jacobson asked if he wished Favre had already signed and at least attended some offseason workouts, Edwards said: "It would have been [nice], just to see his personality, how he interacts with guys. But you know, he's a Hall of Fame quarterback, and you know most of them are pretty much prima donnas."

Edwards has been a starter for most of the past two years, but isn't typically listed among the Vikings' veteran leaders. He's also prone toward hyperbole. Last year, in fact, Edwards predicted he would break Michael Strahan's all-time record for sacks in a season. He finished 2008 with five sacks, just 17.5 fewer than Strahan's record.

Nevertheless, I would imagine Edwards is not the only Vikings player who shares the locker room sentiment. It's the kind of symbolic statement that rankles veterans throughout the league. Earlier this year, in fact, Newsday reported that Jets players considered Favre "distant" in part because he spent so little time in the team's locker room.

Will this issue impact whether Favre ultimately signs with the Vikings? I doubt it. But Edwards ensured it will at least be a topic of conversation if and when it comes to that.

I'm sure the whole separate locker room thing annoyed a few players in Green Bay and New York too. Just
an annoyance, though, not really a big deal. He's not being brought in to be the glue that holds the team together. If he is, that would be a mistake. He's just a hired gun for a year.

I did like this line from the article....

Nicely done.

So close. laugh.gif

Still glad it is the queens and not us that have to deal with it. I agree it is not a major distraction. Those won't come until he reports.

From what I understand, the separate locker was for when the media were allowed in the locker room. Favre did use his locker in the general area when it was just players, at least that is what he did in GB.

The article also failed to mention that Favre did not use the team locker room in GB either in later years. Not sure when it started in GB, but surely was the case after the Lambeau renovation.
OH Packer revisited
maybe he's bashful

I thought there where a few ex-packers who had spoken out about this.

Given Favre's prediliction to playing practical jokes in the locker room, they may wish to rethink their attitude on this subject...

Yep, always the kidder. Practical jokes in the locker room, pretending to retire. The guy is a laugh a minute.

Yep this is all deeply concerning to me, even though we have the cart way ahead of the horse here. Why should that stop us, I may take the week off of work and consult with Edwards on the ins and outs of him being a potential HOFer. Until than a cup of S..U is in order

My take on it is that it was the right thing to do after Favre achieved superstar status, seperate him from the rest of the lockeroom that is. After a game the reporters have a job to do, interview players. The players have to answer these questions or at least are strongly encouraged to cooperate with the media. If you have a Favre or Michael Jordan sitting on the stool next to a fullback that made a key block on special teams that was key in a great return to win the game that potential interview or quote is never going asked or answered because of the media sworm of cameras and reporters flocking around Favre.

I wonder how common this is. I would guess Manning, Brady, ect must have the same setup if that's the rational for it. Most teams would have the one or two players that would dominate the media's attention I would think.

I could be wrong, but it seems to me that Brett was interviewed in a room other than the locker room after games, based on the appearance of brett and the background in the videos.

They may of put him in a different locker area to spare him the media crush while he changed.

Those were post game press conferences.
