Are there any free agents still out there that you think could come in and have a shot at making the team and even contributing this season?
Here's the guys out there that I could come up with. . .
QB: J.P. Losman - Buffalo
ATH: Michael Vick - Atlanta (once he's reinstated)
OT: Levi Jones - Cincinnati
OT: Mark Tauscher - Green Bay
OG: Evan Mathis - Cincinnati
TE: Scott Chandler - San Diego
RB: Deuce McAllister - New Orleans
RB: Edgerrin James - Arizona
WR: Plaxico Burress - N.Y. Giants
WR: Matt Jones - Jacksonville
WR: Reggie Williams - Jacksonville
DE: Vonnie Holliday - Miami
DE: Kevin Carter - Tampa Bay
DE: Anthony Weaver - Houston
LB: Jason Babin - Kansas City
LB: Derrick Brooks - Tampa Bay
LB: Morlon Greenwood - Houston
SS: Darren Stone - Baltimore Ravens
P: Kyle Larson - Cincinnati
Granted, pretty much each of those players has major issues (thus, why they are still available.) They seem to be old, injured, ineffective or have major character/legal issues.
Despite those list of negatives, is there anyone that you'd like to see the team add to come into training camp and compete for a spot? If so, why do you want them?
Of those listed, there's only 5 guys that interest me. I'd only go for a one year contract for each of them, but I think that they'd make the team and contribute this season.
01. OT: Levi Jones (Cincinnati) - Immediate starter at RT. Gives the young guys another year to develop.
02. WR: Plaxico Burress (N.Y. Giants) - Drama aside, he'd be a great red-zone target for Rodgers. He could use 2009 as a prove it season teaming with Driver, Jennings, Jones and Nelson. . . then move on in 2010.
03. DE: Vonnie Holliday (Miami) - Two years in Miami under Capers, he could provide the team with veteran leadership and insurance in case any of Jenkins, Harrell or Jolly can't stay healthy or struggle.
04. ATH: Michael Vick (Altanta) - He has his own thread. I've made my opinion known there. I'd bring him in as a gadget player and give him snaps at a variety of positions. Adds some electricity and excitement to the offense. Too much drama for TT to even consider this option though.
05. RB: Edgerrin James (Arizona) - His best days are behind him, but he's a savvy veteran who can catch the ball out of the backfield. Should easily beat out Wynn, Lumpkin, Kuhn and Sutton for the 3rd RB spot.

FWIW Vick is not a FA. Falcons still own his rights

I would be interested in Levi Jones and Holliday or Cater. Jones is a solid OT and would start at RT. Holliday or Carter could contribute at DE opposite Jenkins and would complete our DL. I'm mainly concerned about OT and DL this year.

strat1080 - I agree with that assessment that an additional RT and DE would be the perfect additions. And siimply based on age I'd prefer Holliday over Carter. Levi Jones would offer the team an immediate option to start on the right side temporarily while still giving the youngsters the opportunity to take the job away. If they can't take it then you try again next year. I think that he'd be a very solid addition.

Tauscher, then maybe Jones.

If Tauscher checks out medically, then I'd be just fine with bringing him back. I'm just concerned that a second major knee injury on the heels of a poor season might just mean that he doesn't have it anymore. If he does (and he's proven many people wrong over the years), then I do hope that he's back on the team and pushing the lineup at some point this season.

Tausch and then Holiday.

I don't see them bringing in anyone unless there is a serious injury in camp. Our thinnest position is DE in the new defense and judging by the coach speak, it seems like they think they're fine. I don't know if I agree.

It'd be comforting to have someone more established, to be sure. I tend to think they'll be ok at DE though. Maybe better than some of us expect. Ahh offseason optimism.

If Harrell pans out, or even is serviceable at DE it would help a lot. I think it's interesting that Raji is practicing at end as well. So if the DE rotation is: Jenkins, Jolly, Harrell, Raji (in situations), Montgomery, and probably either Alfred Malone or the rookie Wynn, I feel ok with that.

CB Chris McAllister 31 whos is rehabbing a knee and could be very addition to a secondary that could use some help as he comes from Baltimore who runs a 3-4.. Just think Harris Woodson Williams and McAllister being our CBs.. Maybe then Harris would move to FS (Collins IMO is gonna leave as he wants money) Bigby SS and Woodson and McAllister being ur starting CBs in 2010....
