Full Version: But I thought the Vikings didnt talk to Favre last year?
PackerChatters > PackerChatters > NFL Talk > NFC North > Brett Favre Archives

Speaking to reporters for the first time since reports surfaced that he was to meet with Favre, Childress said he has spoken to Favre -- "Just like I did last year, three months ago," -- but the team isn't worrying about Favre at this point, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Well thats interesting...

Ummm, you mean maybe Thompson wasn't lying when he said the Vikings were tampering? I'm sure Chilly just called him to see how he felt, to shoot the bull about shooting some deer or fishing or something.
Jeremy
Well, he's not saying anything that we didn't already know, right? They just couldn't prove it.

As deliberate of a guy as Ted Thompson is, I have no doubt that there was tampering last year. I'm still trying to figure out why the NFL wanted to squelch it. I know Favre is the NFL's golden boy and all, but that whole thing just smelled funny.

Talking to someone is a conversation. Talking to someone about furthering an illegal action is (if I remember correctly from "Law and Order", it is a felony at some level, depending on the level of the crime involved. So, unless Childress can be proved to have tried to lure Favre to Minnesota, this is a dead issue. Though I agree- I REALLY don't like this. Not proven illegal, but certainly at least borderline sleazy.

The problem is that Childress and Favre were friends prior to last year. You have to prove it was more then just a social phone call. That is hard to do with just phone records. Oh I think Childress was tampering just that it is hard to prove one way or the other.

Exactly. the NFL can't really take action unless there was proof. All Favre and Childress had to do is say they were socializing.

Good catch Luvda...I guess it slipped right by me when I read the quote the first time.

Childress has got to be the dumbest coach in the NFL. And the NFL looks pretty dumb now after clearing the Viqueens of tampering.

What kind of proof could the NFL ever have?

I would wager that the standard of proof for the NFL is probably more akin to the standard in civil jurisprudence rather than criminal. That's a long distance from "beyond a reasonable doubt". I doubt if the NFL's penalties for tampering have anything to do with felonies.

I would tend to think more like eire5199.
