Favre Reportedly Testing Out His Arm
It was a relatively quiet weekend on the Brett Favre front, with no major breaking developments. However, there was one nugget of information that surfaced that should be noted:
Jim Souhan of the Star-Tribune of Minneapolis was sent to Mississippi to take the pulse of citizens in Favre’s hometown and find out how they feel about him coming out of retirement and playing for the Minnesota Vikings.
Souhan made the usual rounds in his trip to Kiln, Miss., including a stop at the Broke Spoke, a well-known watering hole down there. He also spoke to Favre’s mother, Bonita, other family friends, as well as some notable locals.
Buried deep in his story was an interesting piece of news coming from J.D. Simpson, who Souhan describes as Favre’s friend and the team chaplain for Oak Grove High School, where Favre works with the football team to stay in shape.
According to Souhan, Simpson said he warmed up with Favre last Monday before Favre threw to the team's receivers. "I didn't have a helmet on," Simpson said. "I wish I had. I help out with the receivers, and he threw a few that bounced off some facemasks out there.
"His arm is there. He's had the same problem with his left arm that he's having with his right. He told me John Elway had the same problem in his last year. It's a certain throwing angle or motion that hurts. It doesn't hurt all the time, though, and just looking at him throwing, you can't tell there's anything wrong with it."
So that begs the question: if Favre is planning to stay retired, why would he be throwing to a bunch of high school receivers last week? The presumption is he is testing out his arm, which could lead one to believe he wants to play if the biceps tendon tear in his arm has healed.
Simpson offered Souhan another interesting observation.
"If this had been a year ago, bang, he'd be in Minnesota right now," Simpson said. "I think this decision is tougher for him than any of them. He really sees Minnesota as a legitimate team that can go all the way. I think in his mind he was retired, but the quality of that team makes this a tough one."
Stay tuned. There’s sure to be more on the Favre front this week.
