Supposedly, according to Bus Cook, BF will address the comeback situation soon and will explain why he is not going to come back. So, here are two questions - what will he say - what should he say?

What will he say? My guess is that he will say he is no longer healthy enough to play a full season and isn't willing to spend the time needed to prepare for another season. He is old and his body is not able to hold up to the rigors of the NFL. Also, he will say if he came back, it would not have been to stick it to the Packers, but rather to sooth that competitive nature he has.

What should he say? Wishful thinking here, but here it goes. He had a change of mind and just could not picture himself ever coming into Green Bay in another uniform. He just has to much respect for the organization and could not come back and alienate the fans that cheered for him for all those years. One day here soon, he would like to sign a deal with the Packers and retire a Packer. While he is still bitter about the way it ended, it is not worth losing all the respect he had with the fans.

Again, wishful thinking there.

My hope is that he gets up there and takes a verbal dump on the Vikings organization, and says that he's considering accepting the Packers' offer for a joint marketing agreement, and that he looks forward to getting back to Wisconsin soon because it's been weird not being there.

He'll just say he's retired. I think all of you looking for some big apology or having Favre crawling back for a marketing contract are going to be disappointed. He's got years to handle that stuff. Just like Bart Starr, Brett Favre will be a legend in Green Bay for the rest of his life. He'll still draw a crowd 30 years from now. I think the focus will be on his retirement and his decision not to play. I think he will avoid talking about any marketing deal at this time, and reengage down the road when he's ready.

He's going to say:

At this time I'm retired. I don't know where that other stuff came from but it's all rumor. I'm happy where I'm at right now.

And that's it. He doesn't need to dump on the Vikings or say anything to get back in the good graces of the Packers, as if he's in their bad graces now. Some time in the next 5-10 years the retirement stuff will take place. And as long as Bart Starr is still kickin' GB already has a legendary QB representing the franchise, so that marketing deal should go away.

I agree. All Favre needs to say is that he's retired and doesn't have any intentions of playing this year. He certainly isn't going to apologize to GB. I don't think he owes anybody an apology. The bottom line is that both parties could have handled last year's saga much differently and certainly made mistakes. Him playing for Minnesota would have certainly been tough to swallow and would prolong improving the relationship between himself, the Packers and fans. Its hard to say if he truly wanted to play for the Vikings this year or if that was a media creation. I admire the man for his play in Green Bay and would love to see him come back to Green Bay and have his jersey retired and inducted into the Packers hall of fame. Its hard to believe what Cook, Favre or the media says so all I'm going to do is wait until the season starts. If Favre is not in training camp or playing in Preseason, I'll assume Cook was right and that all Favre wanted was to retire as a Packer.

Exactly what I was thinking. smile.gif

He doesn't NEED to say any of the stuff I mentioned and I don't expect he will.

But it sure would be nice if he did!

I think he'll admit that he looked into and thought about the possibility of playing w/ the Vikes this year, but ultimately, when he stepped back and looked at the reasons behind him wanting to come back - winning a title - and the realistic odds of that happening, that in the end, it just wasn't worth risking injury, a more tarnished legacy and the tremendous backlash from the fans.

I think he will say he is retired, is staying retired and wants to spend time with his family. He will say his brain and heart tells him to come back but his body is screaming no. And because of all that he will stay retired. He will also thank some people, will he include THE PACKERS?????

I think he should say that he does not understand how all these reports got out of hand, he has considered returning but because he feels he couldn't contribute 100% he will not return to football. He should say how his family and those around him have supported him and he should thank them. He should also thank the Jets for giving him a chance last year, he should thank the Vikings for extending an oppurtunity to play this year if he choose, and last of all he should thank THE PACKERS and their fans for all the support they gave him while he was A PACKER.

Then there will be the Question and answer period. OH BOY!

I wish he wouldn't say a damn thing until September. Then if he really is retired, speak. I just don't want him giving the ol' "there's nothing to this" speech and then have him talking to the Vikings again in another month. Make up your damn mind once and for all - then open your mouth! That would be nice for once.

Pure speculation on my part (and everyone else's here) but I think the only reason he WON'T play this year is if the bicep doesn't recover. He doesn't give a crap about legacy - that's stuff fans and reporters conjure up in their minds. He CERTAINLY doesn't care about injury rist - gawd - this guy had played with a myriad of injuries that would have caused others to shudder and run for their blankies on the sideline. And, while he loves fan admiration (who doesn't), I think that's secondary to his love of the game. What we love about Brett is that he's a fierce competitor and he loves the game. He does not say NO or back down. Period. So, if he's capable of playing and wants to....I say 'why not' and wish him well - even if it's for the Vikes (ouch).

I liken it to our draft pics. If we cut them cuz we don't want them on the roster, do we tell them "no, you can't play for any other team either"? No - they're free to give it a shot and let the chips fall where they may. If Brett improves the Vikings' chances (meaning a good probability he stays healthy, leads the team, etc.) the Vikings should give him a contract.

The biggest risk, IMHO, for any team taking Favre, is to their head coach. If Favre starts faltering at some point in the season, what coach can possibly bench him? End his starting streak? Face the ridicule and second-guessing that he (the coach) knows better than a living legend if he's capable of continuing to play? Favre has always been masterful at playing thru injuries, hiding and minimizing injuries (b/c he's so competitive and wants to keep playing no matter what) that it's very difficult for a HC to know if his game has been radically changed by an injury and he can no longer start. This, to me, is one of the biggest challenges a team takes with Brett at the helm.
