Full Version: Favre as a divisive force
PackerChatters > PackerChatters > NFL Talk > NFC North > Brett Favre Archives

Favre was, without question, the most electrifying player of the last 15 years. His ability to pull wins from nowhere kept everyone on the edge of their seats; the game was not over until Favre was on the bench with no time left.

His ability to throw untimely interceptions and end the Packers post-season was also electrifying, but not in as nice a way.

Today he's become a huge divisive force among Packers fans. There's a large contingent who would like to bench Rodgers and bring Favre back. There's an at least equally large contingent who doesn't want to see Favre throw another football.

Today we read he's retired, but under suspicious circumstances: why would he ask for his release if he's intending to ride his lawn tractor? Does he really hate Thompson? Can he still play more than six games at a high level? Or even six? Can he win a big game, or is he emotionally incapable of succeeding? Is there a coach (read: Childress) who will postpone his QBs development to find out? When some starting QB gets hurt, will we see Favre sign a quick contract to play for a few games while the starter heals? Does he really spend his nights deep in the Bayou wearing a grean-and-gold hoodie and studying the dark side?

We moderators are discussing shutting down this forum. These are all good questions, and could be fun for debate, but unfortunately Favre elicits stronger emotions, both positive and negative, than any other player I know of. It's the opinion of the moderators that voicing these emotions is just tearing the Packer's fan base, and the PC posters, apart.

If you like this forum, I suggest you moderate your own posts. Frankly, we're all sick of the Favre debate, and growing sick of Favre himself.

I actually don't believe there is much to the bolded statement above. Even among those that did not vilify Favre, most seem to agree that Rodgers is the QB of the Packers now.

I would have no problem seeing this subforum disappear. There are extremists on both sides of the Favre issue that love to do nothing but come here and argue. I try to take a more level-headed approach - not getting all worked up over rumors. I don't believe it is a story worth worrying about until something actually happens. But I am sick of the bickering... Maybe we need a 1-2 year time-out on Favre, after which perhaps (?) people will have calmed down.

I rarely post in any BF topics and my last post in one was how it divided Packer fans and members of this board. I choose to stay away from the topics personally.

That being said I feel that the subject should remain as this does pertain to the Green Bay Packers and therefore is a relevant topic.

I don't want to start any freedom of speech debate as this is a private website and is moderated by the site owner and other individuals. As long as the forum rules are followed, then I think the topics should stay. It is the emotions of the posters that are creating the problem, not the topic.

You should keep this forum open at least until it is known for certain that Brett Favre is rerited or playing for the Vikings.

In the latter case you could totally delete this forum and start a new one called;

THE VIKING/FAVRE FORUM.

Then sell it to a Viking site!!!!

The subforum should not be locked or removed, in my opinion. It won't do anything to prevent the dissension. It's already well too established. Might as well give people a place to vent.

I don't see Favre as the problem. At least, not yet.

The real problem is the media and a core of hysterical fans that keep speculating and circulating unfounded rumors. Whatever, par for the course considering what went down last year.

Until Favre signs with the Vikings or another team, he is retired. Let it go until there is an actual reason to discuss his return.

@ Packer Backer NY

The strong emotions around Favre aren't limited to the developments of the last few weeks. Personally, I despise Favre now. And it has nothing to do with anything that's happened here in '09. So just squashing the rumor-mongering and speculation isn't going to solve the animosity, since that's not the root cause of it.

Get over it already.

I would vote to just get rid of the Favre forum but then topics would probably just end up in the NFL forum.

Obviously by the last few posts proves Mark's intent of this thread.

I'm not sure if Mark wanted to bring this out for debate because it looks like it's headed for the same old thing again.

Lets get it together as Packer fans.
