Maybe I'm old-fashioned this way - but why don't we just refer to them using their NAMES?
If they turn out to be star players, their own names will be well-known enough.
Of course, this comes from someone who refuses to call Aaron Rodgers anything other than Aaron Rodgers or Rodgers...
I tend to agree with you ajg, however, I will throw something out there. Of course, I'll probably be lambasted for it, but whatever.
Nicknames are normally used in one of two ways, to show friendship and comradery or to show derision and disdain.
Some of my friends have nicknames. I have been given a nickname or two in the past. It is normally something that only friends use with each other and can even be different amongst different circles of friends.
Other times people make up nicknames to make fun of people. It happens a lot in gradeschool and even here on the board, ie. Tightwad Teddy, etc. (I wonder if there is any correlation??)
I think a lot of people like to makeup and use nicknames to show their "friendship" with professional players. If they can use a nickname instead of their real name, it makes them seem or maybe feel closer to that person, even though they will probably never meet or talk to that person.
We also live in a copycat society, and since ESPN and other entities use nicknames for some reason or another, if we use the nicknames, or even make up new, cooler ones, it seems that we are an accepted part of society.
I just prefer using real names or else something similar, ie, calling Paul Molitor - Molly. That was very common, but I wouldn't really call it a nickname. It was just what a good chunk of the fan base called him.
Ok.. I am now prepared to accept my beating by those who love using nicknames.
