Let me first lay this foundation. I believe for a team to be great (seriously challenge for a spot in the Superbowl), it must be "great" on one side of the ball, and at least "good" on the other. St. Louis won a Superbowl with a great offense and a good defense. Conversly, the Ravens won with a great defense and a good offense. That's fairly simplistic, but I don't want to take too much of your time expounding.
Looking at our Packers, we are closer to a combination of "great on offense, good on defense" than the other way around, I believe.
Therefore, in my mock, I address the Offensive side of the game 1st, adding a couple of key players who could get us to that "great" level. The rest of the draft emphasizes adding depth on defense while hoping to find a gem or two.
Also, by "gimmicky", I mean there are a couple of key trades I make in order to get my targeted guys. The trades are not far-fetched, even in the current state of the draft with teams eschewing high picks for their high cost.
I first propose that Denver trades from 12 to 9 in order to land Sanchez (truth be told, he may be long gone). We get their 3rd rounder as the price. I then have us using one of our 3 third round picks to move up from the second into the bottom of the 1st (yes, TT with 2 1st rounders -- proposterous indeed). Finally, I have us packaging our remaining 2 3rds to move back into the 2nd.
Let me also say my philosophy is to draft "play makers" early and "play enablers" later (OT is the one exception). For example, in a 3-4 Defense, an OLB would be a "play maker", whereas a NT or DE is a "play enbable" as they engage OL as their primary role.
Here it is:
1a. Michael Oher OT -- will he even last to 12? Seems like teams may be rediscovering him and he's making a late surge.
1b. Knowshon Moreno RB -- perhaps my favorite guy in this draft and a potenial "special" player. Also another weapon for Rodgers to throw to.
2. Clint Sintim OLB -- no need to project a college DE to OLB with Sintim; he played the position for years for Al Groh. People down him because he lacks the lateral quickness of a true OLB, which may be true, but I'm using him strictly as a rush LB.
4. Kevin Barnes CB -- tall, athletic CB suited for some press but mostly zone-type coverage. Could be gone by here, but shoulder surgery knocks him down. Highest Wonderlic score at the Combine -- 42!
5. Clinton McDonald DE -- converted DT who will get drafted this high because of a great workout and a passion for football. He will be a bit of a project, but has a great work ethic that should compensate.
6a. Sammy Lee Hill NT -- the question on him is the level of competition.
6b. Bear Pascoe TE -- throwback TE who is a better pass catcher than people realize.
7. Greg Orton WR -- Big WR with soft hands. Matt Painter's go-to-guy this year at Purdue. His timed speed costs him in the draft, but a steal this late.
