Full Version: Packers show interest in top former prospect

Kind of surisped they would have interest with the kids past. Does not see like someone TT would want on the team.

OH Packer revisited
I tend to think TT and the packers pay more attention to guys they can draft in the 7th round or pick up as street FAs than they do the rest of the draft. I know thats not true but he kicks the tires of just about every possible prospect. You can't argue with that. They just don't let us hear anything regarding higher draft picks.
Hands
Agree about TT and team looking at every prospect. Shows they aren't afraid of turning over any stone that may have a player involved. Actually, see a parallel between the Williams kid and the safety TT drafted from OK. in his frist draft. that was playing in the arena league.
Bruce
Frankly, I would love to see the Packers take a late flyer on the kid. Willie is a talented young man, who screwed up early. Maturation is the key to whether or not he will have a NFL career.

He sounds sincere, and when you dig his sins were pretty minor post high school.

“All I want is a shot. If I get my foot in the door, I’m going to give 185 percent. I’ll do anything. I’ll help the film men set up and pack up. I’m going to put my all into it. One day, I want to be one of the greats. No matter what it takes. I just want to play. I don’t care if they tell me ‘Willie, we just want you on special teams.’ I’ll say ‘Coach, no problem. I’m going to run down like I’m running a 40 every time, until you tell me to slow down.’”
NeuBrew
Usually I'm okay with it, but this guy was seriously messed up. He was pathological. I do hope he turns it around.

Personally, I like a good redemption story. Reading his comments, the kid sounds genuinely apologetic and he's owning up to his actions. I'd love to see the Packers give him a shot.
craig
Interesting story, seems like he could be a feel-good story if he could live productively and responsibly.

Also seems like a kid that might be better suited in Green Bay than in a bigger venue that might have more temptations/distractions.

I agree. I'd like to see a 7th on him or at least signed as an UDFA. His comments sound much more sincere than most players comments and they seem to come from the heart. His former coaches seem to think he has grown up and it sounds like he left his trouble behind when he went to the small school. I think he would be a good player to groom for a year in a small town like GB and see what happens.

Same here.

I have my doubts, with him not having played against top talent in a few years, but who knows, wilder things have happened.
LeRoy36
The reason Ted is interested is because he can get a guy that could of been a top ten talent/high pick had he played his cards right in the 7th round/ free agency, ala Wynn. If the guy is telling the truth and all he wants is a shot and would do the right things I dont see a problem taking a flier on him in the 7th. Plus Green Bay is one of those places that if you just want to focus on football you can.

Even though Green Bay cant offer the sights and sounds of say a Los Angeles or New York it in returns offers a quiet place to live where you wont be temped.

I think this is a myth, you can get into just as much trouble in GB as anywhere else. While it is legitimate to say that if you want a small town atmosphere and the charms that come with it, GB is the place. There may be a greater variety of trouble to get into with a larger population base, but to say GB is 'safer' is a myth.

Probably getting him away from the crew he hung around with, regarless of location, is more important than where he goes (unless of course, GB is the kind of place a crew wouldn't go to.)
Packergeist
I also agree. As many have said, he seems sincere and seems to have grown up a bit. I have no problem
giving him a chance. If he doesn't work out, he doesn't cost much.

In his youth, Donald Driver dealt drugs and stole cars, and I don't know anyone that questions whether he should be in Green Bay. He turned his life around, and maybe the Williams kid can too. If he was still up to his old habits I would think differently, but by all accounts, he's not.

Plus....you know.....he's going to give 185%. wink.gif
Nimrod
Well I think it would be worth a late #6 or #7 on him a former top ten talent with all the measurables for a late round pick whats not to like.
LeRoy36
I dont think its a myth. Now granted if you are going to do wrong your going to do wrong regardless of location but for some its just about getting away from the temptation. If there arent any night clubs in the area you live its less likely for you to be going to one and getting into trouble.

Of course people can still get in trouble but I was going off of its a better place than most because the built in temptation isnt there in Green Bay, unlike a Florida, New York, or California based team. But like I said if the guys a bad apple he is a bad apple.

If you listen to this kid though he sounds like he wants a shot and I would figure he has a better shot in Green Bay than say New York because on those late nights when he is up looking over game tape/ the playbook and he wants a break he isnt tempted to go out to a social bar/club where trouble seems to always be for players. He is more likely to stay home.

I mean there is a reason for the talk for Green Bay being safer. Also there is a reason why we always seem to get players saying they dont want to be drafted by Green Bay or arent interested in signing with Green Bay. Heck look at Woodson he said that there is just a feeling around the league that alot of players dont like going to Green Bay because there isnt much to do there. Although if you a down to earth guy and dont need the lights and really enjoyed the college type atomsphere Green bay maybe the closiest thing in the pros to that.

That was my favorite line. Not 100%, not 110% and not 200%, but 185%. Somehow that sounds more sincere!

Nice gangsta grillz!!! Quite the rap sheet!!

Post High School he has one offense - A traffic stop and arrest for marijuana possession at Louisville that ended in his dismissal from the team.

No doubt that he was a wild Juvenile who pushed limits constantly, but his coaches testimony and his openness seem to indicate a young man who has grown up and gotten the message.
LawDog
The Pack has two sixth round selections and one seventh round selection. Yes I would select Williams with one of these selections. Young man has a lot to prove. Also a daughter that he needs to provide for. Williams knows he most likely gets one crack at a shot in the NFL. I would definately take a chance on him.
grabthar
Well, he just signed with the Packers as an UDFA. Nice story if it works out.

Really? Cool! Can't hurt...
WCH
I also have my doubts, due to the talent that he's gone against...but I also love a good redemption story! I think I actually have a new favorite (even if temporary...) player. smile.gif

Here's hoping that he can make it!
Jeremy
Cool! I was hoping they'd take a flyer on this guy. Didn't even have to waste a draft choice. If nothing else, it'll be a fun story to follow.
Ellis269
Willie Williams is an UDFA to be excited about. Truly a top-end talent who is down because of off-the-field issues that may or may not be only in the past. If he uses his experiences to learn and mature from, the Packers could have ended up with an absolute steal. When I read about his story I can't help but think back on how Donald Driver was a drug-dealer as a kid in a rough Houston neighborhood who managed to grow up and turn his life around. He's also exactly the kind of guy that I introduce Willie to when he gets into camp and have him serve as a mentor for him. So far, this is my favorite signing post-draft. There's a lot of competition at the LB spot. Hopefully WW will factor into that competition as well. Good signing.

I don't think that's true. In the past TT traded down because he was trying to rebuild the team Mike Sherman ran into the ground. This year he needs bodies due to the move to the 3-4.

Now that the team is somewhat established he may trade up more.

Unfortunately, we may not be signing him after all....

I'm pretty sure he isn't signed by anyone. I don't remember hearing about him signing after the Packers interest fell through, and I have checked the nfl.com website and he isn't listed there. They already have the UDFAs listed, so if he would have been signed, I'm pretty sure he would be there. The do have all of the Packers UDFAs that they have signed (Simmons, Sutton, etc)
