Hoping to get some readers and comments since i worked on this for 3 days and got firmly entrenched in my girlfriends doghouse. Definitely worth it to advise Ted how to lead the Pack to dominance once more.
Disclaimer! This draft is about players I believe the Pack would be well advised to target. I did not go through every pick to see who is left, but i did check several sites so my picks should be reasonable. That may be cheating, but it makes it more fun!
After Ted hired me as his armchair GM, I told him I need more picks, especially 4th rounders. He ended up working 3 trades:
1) The #9 for a late 1st, 2nd, and 4th
2) Our 3rd for a 4th and 4th.
3) Our two 6th for a 4th
Yes you are correct, that is 5 total 4th round picks. I originally had players dropping to the 5th and 6th but I didn't want a "he'll go higher than that" ticket from the mock draft Mounties(anyone that anal must be Canadian). Probably will still happen as they have to meet their quota.
AND WITH THE PACKERS ON THE CLOCK
R1 Clay Mathews OLB USC Height: 6-31/8 | Weight: 240 | 40-Time: 4.67 – I had not looked much into Mathews until reading about his absolutely phenomenal 1.49 10 yard split time showing he will be one of the most explosive players in the NFL. That explosiveness will do him well rushing the passer and breaking to the ball when dropped back in zone coverage as a 3-4 OLB. Excellent special team player. Good work ethic as came in as a 185 lbs walk-on. Only started 10 games. While no evidence, I have a bit of a Mandrich concern on any player that gets that big that fast and there are rumors of use by a teammate.
R2 Beatty OT UConn - Height: 6-6 | Weight: 307 | 40-Time: 5.12 : Beatty is considered extremely athletic for a LT prospect giving him big time upside. His NFL.com profile says he may be the best combination run blocker, and athletic enough to handle speed rusher in pass blocking. The knock on him was that he only fits in a ZB scheme unless he bulks up. He’s been able to add weight to get up over 300 lbs so as long as he doesn’t loose a step, I think he’s the complete package for a ZB team like the Pack.
R2 Jarron Gilbert DE San Jose St Height: 6-51/4 | Weight: 288 | 40-Time: 4.87 - NFL.com profile on Gilbert notes that he has rare athleticism for a player of his size. Has put up eye popping numbers in the WAC, leaving some to question his ability versus higher competition level but was dominate in the Eash West shrine competition to quiet those concerns. Because of size, may have more value to a 3-4 team as he is the perfect DE size. . Ascending talent -- might be just scratching the surface of his potential. I’d pick Gilbert over Jackson.
R3 William Moore S Miss Height: 6-01/8 | Weight: 221 | 40-Time: 4.53 - Profile on Moore lists him as having great size, good centerfielder with ball hawking skills, turns INTs into TDs. Goes up and makes plays on the football. Some worry about tackling technique and susceptibility to double moves but that can be taken care of with proper coaching. If he would have came out after his 07 season, he would have been a mid 1st rounder. Some other Safeties had better numbers in 08’s allowing the Pack to get him in the 3rd, but he’s capable of spectacular play.
R4 Mike Goodson RB TX A&M Height: 5-107/8 | Weight: 208 | 40-Time: 4.54 - Lowered 40 to 4.4s at proday. My opinion is Goodson shows Moreno type ability, but muturity concerns make him available in the mid rounds. The Pack is a passing team, so they should have a Westbrook type RB that can be a passing asset since we pass 40 times per game. Goodson’s profile on draft sites will lists him as being an incredible athlete, displaying elite speed, creativity as a runner, and the ability to change direction without losing much speed. He gets to top speed in a hurry, and can turn on an extra gear to leave defenders in the dust. The biggest question surrounding Goodson? Is he coachable, or will the immaturity he displayed at A&M (frigid relationship with coaching staff) follow him to the NFL?
For every Ryan Leaf there’s a Randy Moss. Some mature, some don’t. A Westbrook type would make the offense so dynamic that it’s worth a shot in the 4th. Also has return potential.
R4 Mike Wallace WR Ole Miss Height: 6-03/8 | Weight: 199 | 40-Time: 4.33 – Offense, Defense, Special Teams. 3 ways to win, or lose, a football game. The Bears have won games with no offense because of their special teams. Here’s the Pack’s chance to get their own Devon Hester. Wallace is an excellent return man but still raw and developing as a WR. He has some great tools offering decent size and absolutely blazing speed. Draft sites gushed about him at Senior Bowl Week, mentioning crisp routes, having a knack for getting behind defenders, and was the best blocking WR. Links to Draft Guys comments: Draft Guys On Location at the Senior Bowl , Draft Guys On Location at the Senior Bowl. Mentioned as someone who may end up being a better pro than collegian due to late development. The Pack needs to improve greatly on Special Teams, and Wallace is the type of return man that teams fear. Also a legit deep threat that the team lacks right now.
R4 Sammy Lee Hill NT Stillman Height: 6-37/8 | Weight: 329 | 40-Time: 5.15 – The only negative in Hill’s profile is that he played at a small school. Tall with muscular overall build and long arms. Displays excellent agility and quickness for his size. Uses a punch and good hand play to discard offensive tackles at the line of scrimmage. Swats chipping running backs away like flies on the outside. Good closing speed and has the length to wrap up in the backfield. Athletism allowed him to play some DE that limited double teams and allowed him to rack up some nice stats. Could play both 3-4 DE and NT offering versatility. Loads of upside here.
R4 Xavior Fulton OT ILL Height: 6-41/4 | Weight: 302 | 40-Time: 5.04 The best thing about Fulton is that he is only beginning to scratch the surface of his talent after spending the first three years of his career at defensive tackle. Has the body to easily put on weight, but will be at his best in a ZBS where athletism is preferred to size. Fulton’s profile raves about things he can do, but notes he is inexperienced and played with a shoulder injury limiting what he could do. He just had surgery to fix the shoulder which will drop his draft status more than it should. Again a great mid rounder with loads of potential. Definitely needs a year to get bigger, stronger, and polish his technique but has upside.
R4 Kevin Barnes CB Maryland Height: 6-01/4 | Weight: 187 | 40-Time: 4.52 - Had a great 07 but injury in 08 causing him to go lower than his abilities show. Barnes is a player with a lot of upside that has yet to be tapped. He is tall, athletic, has good ball skills and is a playmaker in the secondary. He has continued to improve every year in college and has the physical gifts to project well to the NFL, where he may be a better pro than collegian. Plus at a draft chat at draftcountdown.com I got this answer to a Martin vs Barnes question. Scott Wright: Sherrod Martin will go higher but I really like Kevin Barnes, who could be a real steal for someone in the mid-rounds. More on Barnes here.
R7 Pannel Egboh Stanford Height: 6-53/4 | Weight: 276 | 40-Time: 4.90. Another big guy to throw in the rotation. Perfect late pick for a 3-4 team. Really only valuable to a 3-4 team as he doesn’t have the bulk to play tackle and doesn’t have the pass rushing skills to play DE in a 4-3. What Egboh’s profile says is he got the quickness and strength to play the run, athletic enough to be used in zone blitz schemes, and has the frame to put on some muscle. He only played 1 year of Varsity football, so he is raw and has upside potential. There were some FA’s with similar skills that got paid pretty well this offseason (Canty, Igor, etc).
UFA Gano P/K FSU - Punted the ball out at or landed on the 1 yard line so many time vs the Badgers in the Champs Sports Bowl that he got the game MVP. My Badgers didn’t have a chance when they needed to go 99 yards half the time they got the ball. Can he do that on a regular basis, or was that the game of his life? Like all college punters, needs to speed up his footwork. Also would be backup K.
I really wanted to squeeze Beckum TE UW in too since I think he will be a Probowler but Ted can only do so much.
How I see this draft affecting the team:
D line gets 1 starter, 2 rotational guys. Some excellent building blocks for a 3-4 DL. Tougher in the trenches and we won’t be caught with our pants down if there’s an injury this year.
OLB gets a starter. At least 1 legit 3-4 OLB on the team, should improve two key weaknesses, pass rush and TE coverage
S gets a starter (maybe it will take a year) Safety that can actually cover!
CB depth, Nickel/Dime packages. A CB that can play some zone too.
O Line 1 starter, 1 eventual starter. A dominant start was a dire need. Welcome influx of athletism to our ZBS
RB 3rd down/ passing back. The Pack is a passing team as is Philly, what Westbrook does for Philly Goodson can do for the Pack.
WR 5th- Someone with the capability to stretch the field
KR/PR Remember the Howard / Rossom days you wouldn’t leave your couch during a kick return… they return!
P Can’t be worse than last year. Have him pretend he's playing the Badgers
I think this is a great draft. It add 5 picks to the trenches, where we needed the most help. It also significantly upgrades several other areas that will be the difference between wins and 1 score losses. These players all have huge upside, with the weaknesses being things that can be cured with proper coaching and time (inexperience/raw, injured, level of competition concerns, immature).
They all have the tools to be assets to the team, and the potential to be great.
Thanks for your time and I apologize for summiting you to my humor for that long.
Let me know what you think!
