I would love for the Packers to re-sign Tauscher for the RT position, but we don't know when or if he will come back from his knee surgery. The Cleveland Browns have released Kevin Shaffer because of salary cap reasons. Before Shaffer came to the Browns, he was starter with the Falcons under Alex Gibbs and Jags. He knows how to play the ZBS blocking scheme. I think he would make a good starter at the RT postion because I don't know how Giacomini is going to be as a starter. The coaches have raved about him, but he has never started or played in the NFL.

Since Shaffer's release, there will be a lot interest in him because Jags is in TB and Gibbs is in Houston. They have a connection with him.

I hope the Packers look into Shaffer if they are not going to re-sign Tauscher or if some other team signs him before the Packers do.

I liked him in Atlanta and think that for a decent price he'd be an excellent addition. Not a sexy pickup, but a solid one.

Keep an eye on Shaun Rodgers, Donte Stallworth and Corey Williams. They're all due big roster bonuses today. It'll be interesting to see what happens with them. One or more may end up being traded or cut to avoid having to pay big money to them if they aren't in Mangini's long term plans. McCarthy has a history with both Stallworth and Williams and NT is obviously a need. Don't know if I want any of them particularly, but they certainly offer more value than guys still on the market.

Shaffer might be a decent pickup, but i would prefer if we waited until after the draft if possible. i think there's a good chance we end up with one of the top tackles at #9. lately the NFL has seen a bunch of very successful rookie tackles, and i want the pack to get a piece of that action.

if we go in another direction at the top of the draft, Shaffer would be a good fallback. although, truth be told, i would be surprised if the Viqueens didn't pounce on him soon.

I like shaffer a lot.

He excelled in the zbs in atlanta. Miscast in a scheme that didn't fit him in Cleveland.

Whether we get a tackle in the draft or not, I think he'd be a smart, savy New England-esque pickup.

I'd take Williams back- at the right price. That would be neat- getting a reliable starter in the rotation that knows the team (and vice versa), and, in effect, get a free second round choice! I believe he could be a DE- anyone remember how big he is, and therefore be a backup NT?

I'd also be interested in Rodgers. What the heck? Why not? If it wouldn't cost the Packers an arm and a leg in pay, and wouldn't cost a draft pick, I think TT would definitely consider the move. Though with him, you NEVER know what he's going to do.

Haven't heard anything about the Cleveland situation. I'd have expected to hear if any of these players had been cut or traded. Looks like the Browns are just going to bite the bullet and keep these guys.

If history is any indication, he'll play 14+ games and be an inside force unlike any we've had since GBrown. Unfortunately, he won't be cut and CLE has no interest in trading him. Why would they? He's easily their best defensive player and worth more than the late 3rd or 4th round pick he'd bring.
