Reportedly he did not agree to some of the off-season
workouts so the Redskins released him.
I smell a salary dump.

Go Pack!!

He didn't exactly contribute a lot with the Redskins last year. Frankly, we dodged a bullet not picking him up in FA last year.

He had some medical problems last year but says he is raring to go- still some hunt in this dog or something like that.
I'd check him out medically of course but I would take a shot at him- As with a lot of the other folks mentioned he is not a long term answer but he gives time to see what they have in the younger LB's- Thompson, Hunter and Bishop and doesn';t make OLB a must need in the draft.

And he has a history with Capers of course- Taylor was defensive player of the year when Capers was his coach.

I think that train has left the station.

if his heart is still in the game, he might be a better pickup this season than last.

remember, the redskins had to trade a second rounder for him, while this year he only costs money. and he likely won't get Chris Canty money anywhere. i think he's worth a gamble for front-loaded contract.

Agreed. I'd even consider moving him back to DE if that worked better than having him at OLB. That way we can draft an OT or an OLB, and if we draft the latter, Taylor can help groom him into an all-pro. Worth looking into at the very least. If he comes relatively cheap, I wouldn't mind it in the least.

I didn't realize he was 35- thought he was a little younger- At this rate I'd look into getting him at least but unless he was pretty cheap I'd pass. And it depends on what else they do in free agency. If the bring in Holliday they might not want two relatively old relatively big bucks players given what they face with their own free agents next year.

Taylor weighs 255 lbs, he wouldn't fit as a 3-4 end - unless you meant as a situational 4-3 end.

We need players!! He might not be a long term guy, but we need players now. He can play. I would bring him in if he clears medical and I would bring Holliday back now. Both are better than any one player we could draft at the position. Im tired of preparing for the future. You have to have a blend of both.

I am curious about whether Capers is interested in Taylor, and vice versa. Taylor had a pretty good year playing under him...defensive player of the year, something like 14 sacks, 10 FF with 2 recovered, and 2 INTs. That was about 2 and half years ago.

I apologize. I just read that Taylor has played end in Capers scheme. But I also noticed that he's 245 rather than 255. Smaller than I had thought...

A lot makes sense about trying to bring in Taylor.

For the sake of reiterating, I'll let Bedard speak to the positives:
  • Taylor won the 2006 NFL defensive player of the year award when Dom Capers was his defensive coordinator.
  • Taylor played outside linebacker in the 3-4/4-3 hybrid defense in Miami before being traded to the Redskins.
  • He knows Capers and the scheme.
  • Taylor was hurt and played out of position in Washington.
  • Ted Thompson kicked the tires on trading for Taylor last year.

That said, I think there is one important caveat, aside from his age: the reason the Redskins cut him is because he was unwilling to spend time working with the team during the off-season, opting instead to spend time with his family.

At his age, I can understand the hardships in juggling a family. However, this is a defense learning a new scheme. This is a defense that has a lot of young players. This is a defense that could benefit from some veteran leadership, especially from a player who has experience in this scheme.

As it stands, I think the Packers could use Taylor more than Taylor could use the Packers, which already gives him leverage. I just don't think that if Taylor wants to be successful and help this team that he can afford to show up at his whim.

He needs to commit.

And I don't think he wants to.

So in turn, I'll wish him the best.

Agree Ror. In five years (or less) he can spend all the time with his family that he wants.

I think having Capers has our DC coordinator gives us a chance to bring in both Holliday and Taylor. Taylor would have to be crazy not to consider. He had the best season of his entire career in Capers defensive scheme. From what I've heard though, Taylor was not very interested in going to Green Bay last year and is commitment to football now days is questionable at best. He could be had for about what Canty made in New York. I really like the prospect of bringing in Taylor in combination with Holliday or Olshansky. With those moves, this defense has the potential to be pretty good for a couple of years while other prospects can be developed. If this team had a decent defense, it could do something in the playoffs.
