I think this shows you Davis is really and truly senile. He gives a CB money that is equal to a QB pay. Asomugha gets 3 years and 45.3 million. Asomugha is guranteed 28.5 for the first two years. The Raiders have a 3 yeard year option that pays either 16.8 million or the QB franchise tag which ever is bigger. So if the Raiders pick up the option they could end up paying him even more if in the next two years the QB tag gains more then 2.3 million as it is right now 14.65 million. Asomugha is good but to pay this? No wonder the contracts are getting out of hand with senile Davis giving these contracts out like candy and then every other player thinks this is what they should get.

Look at Walkers deal- and he stunk up the place- looks Like Huff will become availible- maybe a change of scenery is all he needs.

i agree, he lost his mind years ago. he throws money around like a madman and a lot of the time the players dont necessarily contribute anything (see javon walker). asomugha is probably THE best CB in the league right now and i can see that he wants to lock him up for 3 years but this is insane.

This makes him the A-Rod of football. A crazy contract that puts more pressure on him than on the team. Every time he screws up, the fan boards will be going nuts, spouting off that "Was that play worth (fill-in-the-blanks with some large amount of money) that we paid him?"

Big Al does realize that the NFL does have a salary cap- doesn't he?

For the record, when you have that much money you are eccentric, not senile. However he is just plain nuckin futs. smile.gif

that is pretty shocking, but at least he gave the money to a good player this time!

one of the FAs this year was talking about he wanted "Tommy Kelly" money, and i would imagine 3/4 of people who follow football said "who?"

of course, this is the same owner who traded a 2nd rounder for De'angelo Hall, paid him a bundle, and then cut him in the same season! unbelievable.

I don't think so. They cut Gibril Wilson along with two others to free up some cap space. I'm wondering if that means Huff survives for a while.

I saw that after I posted it

Even more baffling is the contract he put together with Lechler. 4 years $16 Million. What the hell is wrong with Al Davis? You don't give a friggin punter this kind of money, I don't care who they are. That is just ridiculous. You're better off with Frost and dealing with crappy performance than paying $4 Million per year to a special teams player. Al Davis had 25% of the Raiders cap tied up to only 4 players. That is true insanity. That team is going to be in serious trouble really soon. Jamarcus Russell makes $12 Million per year. McFadden makes $10 Million per year. Asomugha makes $15 Million per year and Lechler makes $4 Million. That is $40 Million tied up to only 4 players. That is just crazy.

Its fair to say Al Davis has just ruined the Packers chances of signing any big free agents this year. He has just drove up the FA market value to astronomical levels. A lot of NFL Execs are seriously POd about this. They say Al Davis is ruining the NFL with these ridiculous deals year after year. He pays average players Pro Bowl money and pays star players unheard of money.
WCH
A 3rd-year option that pays him the franchise value of a QUARTERBACK? That is...very strange. Oddest thing I have ever heard of in an NFL contract.

It seems that eccentric Al and stumblin' bumblin' Ford are having a race to the bottom of the NFL owners totem-pole.

Honestly, though, this actually qualifies as a very wise deal, and clever negotiating, by Raiders standards.

.... and then cuts them half way through the season (DeAngelo Hall) or after a decent year (Gibril Wilson).

My fear is this sets the bar for stud corner's and puts more pressure on GB to get future replacements for Harris and C-Wood. Our only options may be through drafting and then locking up long term.

I think Al wants, desperately, one more Super Bowl ring before he dies.

And it is clouding his judgement.
Gregg
This confirms what Sapp said about Oakland.

That they will not be a real contender as long as Davis is running things.

There is no doubt that NA is one of the top 3-5 corners in the NFL. Same with Lechler as a punter.

But as Peter King noted, Davis signed both guys to contracts that don't just far surpass what the best at their positions have signed. THey absolutely smashed them.

For instance, the NA deal surpassed the one Philly did with Samuel, the previous high for a CB, by 62%!!

The previous high for a punter was McBriar at 1.7 million per. It looks like Lechler is going to do almost double that.

Then what happens after these nutcase deals: Walker plays poorly, Wilson was average and gets cut, and Hall was mediocre and gets cut. The amount of dead money he is accumulating is going to be a real detriment.

But the worst thing is this: If he would have traded both players he would have gotten a pile of draft picks. And that is what this team needs. They need WR's, OL, safeties, and help on the DL. Does anyone think they will knock off San Diego this year? I don't.

Plus they could have really lightened up their payroll by trading both of them.

Al Davis runs that franchise with the same level of sophistication as the folks you see posting on the internet about how a team should get this FA and that FA. The only difference is he actually does it (which goes to show how well that sort of approach works out in real life).

I feel deeply sorry for Raiders fans -- reputation and a few morons aside, a lot of them remind me of Packers fans. They don't deserve the sort of treatment they've gotten from the NFL and Al Davis.

Thank God I'm a Packers fan. This could happen anywhere else in the NFL -- Jerry Jones is my leading candidate to be the next Al Davis.
