Mike and Mike just reported Favre to retire. Mortonson just confirmed this. Great career Bret see you in the hall of fame.

Here's ESPN's take.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3898942

Thought this bit was revealing:

QUOTE
He knew there would be comparisons between his statistics and those of the quarterback who replaced him in Green Bay, Aaron Rodgers, the very first player Thompson drafted when he took over the Packers' front office. Favre admits that his family and friends were consumed with keeping him informed about how his numbers measured against those of Rogers and constantly urged him to throw more touchdown passes than his replacement. Favre admits to virtually no interest in that kind of intramural competition. But he was devout in doing whatever he could to ensure that the Jets accomplished more than the Packers.

"The only thing I worried about was winning,'' he said. "There was a time in my career where I paid more attention to individual stats, but in the last couple of years the most important thing was winning and losing. In the end, that's what matters most. Was I pissed at Green Bay? Sure. But I wasn't pissed at their players. I did keep up with the wins and losses. Sure, it was hard not to do that. I didn't wish them bad, but I wished us better.''

I hope he is retired for good.

But I'm still not counting on it...

Somehow, this had a lot more zing to it last year!

I like Brett and I like his family ( as much as anyone could like people without knowing them) but his family did more talking then listening.

With that said I hope retirement brings him happiness.

Thanks again...

Thanks again Brett! I hope you enjoy your retirement again.

Favre and the Packers need to bury the hatchet

Both should be motivated to do so - let's hope both parties are smart enough to get it done
WCH
I'm still not convinced that his family didn't talk him out of retirement last season.

Does Favre now have the record for most consecutive seasons announcing retirement? blink.gif

Seriously though, the ESPN article mentions that Favre's agent discussed (with the Jets) an
outright release so he could play for another team such as the Vikings, and that the Jets declined.
Could Favre decide to play again at a more inopportune time and force the Jets to release him due to
cap considerations?

Reading the quotes from ESPN it sounds like Favre and especially his family are not even close to over with it. Time will heal some of this, however I get the feeling that his family and maybe even him are routing against Rodgers. JMHO

No doubt. This is the beginning of the plan. Now that they think he's retired and off the books, they'll move on restructuring contracts here and there to get them under the cap. Then, when they think all is well and good, in June Favre will pop up again and say he wants back in, and he won't take a pay cut. They'll be forced to cut him outright and he'll be on the first flight to Minnesota.

It'll be nice to see him at Lambeau again...
mzahn
It would be nice for our team to be on the receiving end of some of those errant throws!

Also reported by Jay Glazier on Fox, Always Loved favre when he played. So do not take this the worng way, but I find these remarks discouraging.. As I don't believe he had these types of concerns for the Packers the last few years..

In talks with the team brass this morning, Favre told the Jets that he did not want to hold the team hostage and while he still thinks he can play, he felt it was the right decision.

Even tho Brett said he doesn't regret going to NJ publically I wonder if you asked him privately if he had to do it over again would he have gone to the Jets? I'll bet he'd say privately that that was a mistake. He just didn't look like he was having any fun over there and having fun playing football was a big deal for him. sad.gif

I sure hope he doesn't pull a stunt like he did here last summer and come this May saying he has the itch again. If he does he'll be like the boy who cried wolf and his credibility will be shot big time. dry.gif

Right now Alex Rodriguez is writing Brett Favre a thank you letter.
Jomama
It's official. The implication now is that #9 pick becomes highly popular if you want a qb since SF has pick #10. IF Detroit doesn't draft Stafford and he falls, that pick could return us a slew of picks! If you look at the success of the two rookies last year (Flacco and Ryan), one might think Stafford or the kid from USC would be attractive.

Does TT now have more ammo to trade down with Favre's decision? We'll have to see how this plays out in late April.

We will have to wait and see if Manning mails his letter to Favre. He said he wrote one last year after Favre first retired but never mailed it because he thought Favre would come back

Congrats Brett!!

I just wish he could learn to keep his mouth shut.
I'm kind of bummed after reading his remarks.
I'm glad the Packers can show a little class and not
come out with all kinds of poor comments about him.

I wonder what his family's thought were when he started fading
towards the end of the season and ARods stats kept getting
better and better compared to Bretts?!

Go Pack!!

Classless shots on the way out the door. I understand he's upset. I understand we're all human, but I'm 27 and I hold myself to higher standards than this and I'm a pretty open minded guy. I like to live and let live. If you want so smoke pot, go ahead, it's only hurting you (IMO). If you want to use prostitution, go ahead it's probably going to hurt you (IMO) but not anyone else. I don't respect people that are out ruining themselves, but I would respect them even less if they had that same disregard for others. By my standards, he's not being a good person to other people. Maybe he's hurt and this is his way of protecting his ego. I certainly don't consider him "evil", I don't really think of very many people as "evil or bad". I consider Brett Favre to be an emotional midget, a selfish person - basically a 40 year old spoiled brat. I'm glad to see him retire. I'll be glad when the stories fade away and I'll have a very hard time celebrating any thing he did on the football field because it doesn't mean that much to me. What matters to me most, after all of these years of watching football, is rooting for guys I can respect and I honestly get a good feeling about 90% of the guys in our current lockerroom. I know it seems like some are piling on, on the way out the door, but I've been a big non supporter of Brett for a long time. His whole selfish act has warn on me for quite some time.

After a 17 year career, after watching just about every game, it's kind of sad that all I can think of is "good riddance" when he retires.

Bummer, I wanted see him play another year in NY. The NFL is always better when legends are still around.

Anyway, good luck to you Brett and I hope you find your way on camera for a few interviews!

Greg, I am in the same spot... It is a shame that someone like Brett feels the need to take these types of shots.. PackerOrganization needs to rise above this and I for one one would hold him to his own words, that he has no regret on this and retiring as a Jet, so Let him and let the Jets give him the 25 Mil Marketing Deal... Sorry Brett but this is what you said not the Packers. Sometimes you just have to let them lay in the bed they make.

Well Pat...This is according to ESPN, on his familys thoughts....

Favre admits that his family and friends were consumed with keeping him informed about how his numbers measured against those of Rogers and constantly urged him to throw more touchdown passes than his replacement.
jpackman
Is it all a smokescreen. I mean I just read this below in Profootballtalk... Interesting Scenario that could play out , and in light of Brett's Pot Shots I would and could imagining this playing out this way.

In our view, ego and pride could keep Favre from reprising his routine from the summer of 2008. Then again, if he really wants to play and if the Vikings haven’t done much if anything to address their problems at the quarterback position, Favre might be willing to swallow his pride and play chicken with a team that would be facing a significant salary-cap conundrum if he were to perform his second annual cicada-style emergence from ranks of the former NFL players.

Finally, we don’t rule out the possibility of Favre and/or Cook delaying the process of formally notifying the team of Favre’s intention to retire. Based on the report of an intended retirement, the Jets likely won’t take steps to clear enough cap room to accommodate Favre’s $13 million salary between now and February 26. So if the letter declaring an intent to retire doesn’t arrive before February 26, the Jets could be forced at 3:30 p.m. EST on February 26 to cut the cord, making Favre a free agent.

If it happens that way, the headlines wouldn’t declare “Jets Cut Brett,” because Brett has already made it known to the media that he’s going to retire. Among the least-common-denominator crowd, the act of releasing Favre 15 days from now would likely be viewed as merely a paperwork thing.

So Does Brett have that much anger still left ( I personally Think So ) to pull this so the Jets Cut him and then he signs with the Vikings....What are your thoughts...

I am not. All great players come to a point where they are just done and by playing longer then they should they are just embrassing themselves. We have seen this with Emmitt Smith and Jerry Rice and to a point Brett Favre this past year. That's part of the reason I hope Favre is retiring is that he knows he does not have it anymore and does not want to look washed up on the field.
rpiotr01
Another thing, from Peter King:

QUOTE
I remember being with him in Mississippi the weekend before he reported to Green Bay. He was still hopeful the Packers would relent and let him go to Minnesota. I told him he was dreaming. And I told him, "Why don't you at least give the Jets a chance? Maybe it won't come to anything, but you don't want to look back some day and say, 'I should have given the game one last try.' ''

That sounds pretty definitive, as in, if he was released he'd go right to Minnesota. But how would he know if Minnesota wanted him or not? They didn't say anything publicly. Was it just ego making him assume they'd want him? Or does it mean that the Vikes did in fact tamper and were lobbying him to come to their team behind closed doors? dry.gif

It's amazing how the mighty have fallen. When he retired last year, I didn't think football would ever be the same. This year, all I can manage is a shrug of the shoulders and a muttered "good riddance." I hope this is the last we have to hear from this selfish backstabbing punk.

I'm so sick the BS this guy spews. He has no interest in that kind of intramural competition?, yet wouldnt return Rodgers phone calls. Thats just more PR crap from the Favre camp

Sound like the crap his wife was claiming about him putting the team first and being a great team player yet not talking to his teammates in GB.

What he says and what he does, dont match.

Until he realizes the Packers are bigger than he is, he can rot in Mississippi for all I care.

What am I ungrateful for? You think Favre played in Green Bay out of the goodness of his heart? Because he loved the fans so much? Please. Green Bay traded for him and paid him what he wanted. That's the only reason he was here. I'm not going to be grateful to a guy who's ingrateful to his fans and the team that gave him the opportunity to shine. He was wallowing down in Atlanta and might not have ever became anything if Wolf hadn't brought him up here.
PackerBronco
I don't believe it. I have it on good authority that Favre was seen throwing a football to some local 2nd-graders, which means he's already started his off-season training regime. tongue.gif
Heatseeker
Yeah, the thing I'm most relieved about is there won't be any more big Brett Favre news; meaning the people around here who's only ammunition to contribute to any thread is anti-Favre attacks will eventually run out.

Now that is what I'll consider, "good riddance".

Blasting Packer management and/or Brett Favre for what has happened in the past is just a waste of time - this board has been down that road and worn out numerous sets of tires to get there

Do you remember the 70's and 80's?

Favre played here because Wolf brought him here and the GBP pd him. His style of play endeared him to the fans. I am not saying the guy is faultless ,but, some are overly eager to cast aside a payer which comes along maybe once in a generation as nothing more than a malcontent. Did the wavering becomes tiresome, sure, to some it did.

Given all that, this should be a time to look back on the 16 years we were able to watch him play. They had one losing season when he was here. If you, or anyone, thinks the GBP will have one losing season in the next 16...wow.

The idea consistent winning just happens is the most asinine POV many fans espouse. Maybe they are just young and do not know the difference, ignorant, or jealous. I am not sure. Regardless, the blatant disdain showered on Favre is misguided, juvenile, and uncalled for.

As I said the guy is not perfect, but, he also not the villainous character portrayed by some.

How quickly some forget the amount of joy he brought for 3 hours on Sunday's in fall for 16 years.
sinatra
It's not about casting him aside. It's about getting what you give. The guy betrayed the team and its fans and threw away a 16 year relationship because he wanted to act like a petulant child that didn't get what he wanted. He clearly has no loyalty to Green Bay - why should I have any for him?
Lare
If he actually does retire this time, I think Brett will some day admit that he waited one too many years to do so. He lost a lot of his fans and gained some tarnish on his legend status this last year.
