I'm really curious about those who are having problems with the width of the page and having to scroll side to side. I haven't had that problem - I use firefox and nothing changed for me in the shape or size of the page. I'm wondering if there isn't a setting you can change to adjust for that problem on a permanent basis.

My guess is that those who don't like it are 30 or less and those who do are 40 or older
I suspect you have something there, allowing for the exceptions. And I agree with your subsequent eyesight comment.
But this is not just a matter of preference. I'm going to be really bold and say that typographically speaking, the new look is easier to read, period. Younger eyes are more adaptable, however, and don't tend to notice when something is that little bit harder to read - that's when style comes in, because it's easier to prefer style differences when one doesn't notice the strain on the eyes. And the brain's adjustment to change gives the impression that things are harder to read, which trumps when for younger eyes, darker styles seem to be as easy to read.
Personally, I find trying to read white on black or navy blue to be nearly impossible. I know a lot of people like that, which I would put down to stronger eyesight. But unequivocally, I would say that traditional black on white is always actually easier on the eyes. If we just imagine reading all those novels and text books we've read in our lives having been printed on black paper, the concept might be easier to imagine.

I don't know what happened but it is a little better today.

The new look is growing on me.. I do think a little more green and gold would not hurt.
I think it's getting easier because of the time it takes to adjust to change. I wasn't surprised to see people commenting that they found it harder to read, but I would contend that in their case it was because there's always that gap in changing from something we're used to.
So, sure, for a short spell, I would imagine that the new look would be tiring to many eyes - but over time, this look is actually much easier on your eyes. I also was a little thrown when the change occurred - it left me feeling a bit naked or soemthing, lol - and it was initially more difficult on my aging eyes, though I was simultaneously immensely relieved that the change had been implemented because I recognized that it's simply better design for ease of reading, if not for winning art contests.
