Full Version: Cowboys Willing to Pay Big for Ray Lewis

Could Jerry Jones go crazy with Free Agency again? If such a move is indeed true I wonder how this will play in the Packers going after some of the "higher end" LB'ers this off-season if they feel it needs to be addressed.

"According to the Baltimore Sun, "word around the NFL" is that the Cowboys are targeting impending free agent Ray Lewis and are willing to guarantee him $25 million in a three-year contract."

Not a cap expert, do they have that much money to go on a huge spending spree. I know the cap rules suck, but they have a lot of big contracts.

Rumors have been flying around about the Cowboys possibly releasing Owens this off-season. I'm sure such a move would free up some space, however, I'm not sure on the exact numbers with all of this. Not much help, I know.

They are not going to get Ray Lewis, they may not even have enough money to sign DeMarcus Ware!!!

There has been a lot of speculation that Jones has been setting up contracts to take advantage of the year that may have no cap at all. It would only take a minority of owners to allow that to happen.
PACKmanN
I don't care much for Lewis to become a Packer and if this means that Canty can become a Packer then pull the trigger Jones!!!

If he could unload T.O's contract and pick up Lewis' that would be a huge deal for the Cowboys. I gotta give him credit if it's true, at least he tries to bring in playmakers.

2010 could be an un-capped year (though I seriously doubt it) so Jones could structure the deal in such a way so that most of the $25mm hits that season.
Vinnie
Personally, I would target Dansby or Suggs before Lewis.

Expect Jones to want to be the Steinbrenner of the NFL. The stadium he built is not for revenue sharing or the salary cap. He is not like the Mara's or any of the old guard owners. He put his money up and is going to want a return. My guess is that he only falls back if his economic model sinks, which would mean the small markets drying up. Guys like Jones drive me nuts because the NFL is number 1 in all of sports because of the cap. Green Bay and Buffalo and KC and Jacksonsvile, etc. can't compete without restrictions on salaries.

Never say never with a guy like Jerry Jones. This guy makes some very strange moves that other owners would never do, thus anything is a possibility with this guy.

If he's up against the salalary cap, there's ways around it. You can arrange an endorsement deal spread out to the player's liking for the money that can't be met under the cap, or simply pay him person to person off the NFL books.

Yeah, exactly. Lewis knows in the back of his mind (or at least his agent knows and is coaching him) how much more money he can make in the Dallas market in endorsements than in Baltimore. If money is on Ray's mind then Dallas has a great shot regardless of their cap situation.
Gregg
He would have to trade Owens and have someone pick up his contract I think.

The other thing in his favor is he has no first round pick this year I think because of the WIlliams deal. So he will save money on that.

But I really don't see the logic of this. They have a good LB crew already.
Vinnie
I think Zach thomas' deal was one year, but Ray will cost a lot more. Thomas came cheap.

Ray Lewis-LB- Ravens Jan. 22 - 9:56 am et

Owner Jerry Jones said at the Senior Bowl this week that he doesn't foresee the Cowboys being major players in free agency.

Despite a report Dallas might guarantee Ray Lewis $25M, the top priority is locking up DeMarcus Ware. Trying to pluck another team's leader didn't work with Zach Thomas and $20M+ for a 34-year-old would not be a sound risk.

25 million and he's not even the best player on his own team anymore. Go for it Jerry....

i don't get why Ray Lewis would ever agree to dallas. he's smart, he saw dallas implode again this year. he's not gonna sign with someone just for the money. i hope he just stays with Baltimore because he's basically been the face of their franchise forever.

Dallas lacks leadership, and you've got to figure Ray knows he can provide that. Hell, they pick him up, I *hope* they keep TO on the team.

I suspect Jerry Jones is priming for an uncapped year in 2010, so I suspect you'll see contracts written with that in mind.

Of course, I'll have stopped watching NFL games at that point -- what genius looked at baseball and said "yeah, that's the way things should be in our league, too!"?

The deal for Roy Williams was already written with that in mind, that siad I dont think we will see an uncapped year
