Full Version: Tank Johnson DT - Free Agent - Thoughts?

Tyler Durden
I read an article (maybe MMQB?) by Peter King recently where a Packer fan asked him who he thought was out there that would have a nice improvement on the D-line. King's response was Tank Johnson (Dallas) who is a UFA. He's was a turd, but has cleaned up his outside act with Dallas and the guy has talent. I think the Packers could have him if they wanted, he could play against his old team, his hometown is nearby Gary, Indiana.

Realizing that a FA pickup of Haynesworth is a big longshot (I think he re-signs with TEN), would you want Tank Johnson on your favorite team? I would take the chance.

I wouldn't be against it if he truly is past his former legal/personal issues. And, the way I see it is I don't know if he is or if he is just lost in circus that is the Dallas cowboys.

I'd take anyone at this point.

Ditto, we need another big body up in the middle to help Pickett and his aging knees.

I generally am against "turd" signings, BUT the DLine needs some help. Written into his contract MUST be a ban on dogs and "friends" with hand-guns/drugs while he's a Packer. While with the Bears police were called a minimum of 8 times because of his pit-bulls housed behind his residence... noise AND stench.

We must be fans of the same team...

Would getting him make Haynesworth any less of a priority?

Would signing Tank Johnson and nothing else satiate us fans as the splash we would like to see Thompson make in Free Agency?

Or would he still have to sign Haynesworth or Gross?

OR... would he have to sign Haynesworth, Gross, AND Tank to win us over?

Is that even capanomically possible?

Or would that be capological suicide?

Sign Tank Johnson... Sign Albert Haynesworth... Sign Jordan Gross... Draft Orakbo (or do you trade it and sign Peppers?)

Defensive line look something like...

LE Kampmann\Orakbo
DT Pickett\Harrell
DT Haynesworth\Tank
RE Jenkins\Montgomery

Imagine Ted Thompson throwing caution to the wind... if we can imagine it, it can happen.

Dallas is a place to go to "clean up"?

Whats next? Cats and dogs living together?

So would I. After all, if this guy can "get clean" in Dallas, he should be a choirboy in GB. Him and Peppers (I also believe Haynesworth will be retained by Tennessee, one way or another) would be valuable additions.

I absolutely hope that Harrell starts to stay healthy and play well, but, so far, that seems to be a pipe dream. I believe Harrell should show his commitment to the team by staying in GB during the off-season, take part in physical training and game film, and get ready for next year. If he doesn't have that kind of commitment, write him off as a bad choice and move on. Would his absence really be noticed?

EXACTLY!

If he doesn't stay take part in the off-season conditioning program (and damn, does he need it), then he can be another team's treasure because he certainly has turned out to be trash...

Now if he stays, puts forth the effort, and still gets injured, at least he tried to get it right. I would have no qualms with him and the onus is on our GM.

That's a good point Ricky. Think about Tank Johnson AND Peppers coming in to Green Bay. Think of the depth, and the competition to start at Defensive Tackle. That would be a huge upgrade. And like you said, it could bring out the best in Harrell, too.

I'm not sure he'll ever see free agent status -- I'm betting Jerry Jones has a plan to keep him in town.

Maybe. Who know what Jones will do? Sign Mike Vick once he gets out of prison? By the bye, this is not a joke. I really believe this is possible.

Also, by the bye, apparently, according to some sources (I believe PFT- I'll try to check) Haynesworth will hit the FA market. My only concern (the same with Peppers) is guys playing hard to reach FA- then they decide "I got mine" and become (in effect) slackers. Like the draft, FA is a crapshoot. Hopefully, TT would find the next Sean Jones or Reggie White (as if there would ever be another Reggie!).

Seems like there should be a joke involving guns, dogs, Vick, and Johnson if they end up on the same team, I just can't seem to come up with it.

I would be interested in Johnson at a reasonable amount. He is a backup at NT. There are other starters that Dallas needs to resign. ProFootballWeekly indicated that Johnson needed to play better to be considered for return.

Johnson is the type of free agent that I think we could get. The more I hear and read, the less I believe that the big name free agents will become available. Tennessee is very interested in resigning Hainesworth and Peppers likely will be franchised. Other names I have wondered about are Jason Babin (DE) and Jim Leonard (SS). Not big names but guys with several years of experience that could play roles on the team. Babin had a number of sacks his first few years and could fill the pash rush specialist role. Leonard would bring a Wisconsin native back to the roster and would be an upgrade on Peprah at safety. He is currently starting for Baltimore so could also bring some of that mindset to the Packers.
