Chris and Dave, thanks for referencing my post, and including talk about rookies, the poor play of our offensive tackles, and how Barnett has slipped this year.

I have one thing on my mind while waiting for for pod 101, the quality of coaching at Green Bay.

Who, in your opinion, are the coaches/coordinators that we should look to replace as soon as a decent candidate is found ? Are there any you particularly like ?

I know this is a difficult question to answer with any authority, unless you see practices, or have other eyes and ears within Lambeau. Failing that, you can only base your choice on how Offense, Defense, Special Teams, and the various units within them are performing. The raw talent available at each position would make a difference in what coaches could get from them too. It is kudos for any coach that gets more from less (and the reverse applies too, of course).

Chris and Dave,
What has happened to pod 101 ? It's not like it is room 101 (the torture chamber room of the 'Ministry of Love' in Orwell's 1984).

Perhaps those victory celebrations were a little too enthusiastic, and you have been recovering. It cannot have been beer though, because American beer is truly awful, unless there has been a complete revolution there in recent years...

Maybe you were on a bourbon whisky bender. now that is a worthwhile drink, whether it is Kentucky or Jim Beam Or Jack Daniels - mmm.

Nice reference, 1265! Just for that gem, we have recorded episode 101. It should be up on the site soon (if it is not already).

Also, as you are a literate sort, I thought you might enjoy this, which I referenced in the most recent podcast.

As Dave will tell you, I am a coach apologist. I think coaching is important, but overvalued by most fans. I tend to think coaching is a significant portion of the winning equation, but as Cliff Christl once noted, probably not a lot more than 20% -- the talent of the players matters far more in my view than coaching.

That said, Mike Stock has set himself up for scrutiny because of his ouster of Jon Ryan and some uneven special teams play (and his age probably doesn't help him either). Also, as the Packers defense continues to be rather bland and pedestrian, Bob Sanders is probably on a short leash. Whether rightly or wrongly, his schemes are perceived as vanilla, and "bend but don't break" is hardly sexy. The pass rush has been minimal, the LBs largely invisible, but the DBs have made an impact this season--is that Sanders fault or is this situation due to team's injury situation? I suppose it doesn't matter: It all comes back on the D Coordinator, and that probably makes Sanders vulnerable.

Excellent piece crichar3 and a very good read. I loved the reference to Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series (it runs to about 20 books now). If you have never read one, try the very first book in the series, 'Master and Commander'. O'Brians sure touch, referencing even the most obscure facets of sailing, and his depth of knowledge of the period, make his books come alive (and I'm not someone who recommends a book lightly....far from it).

I did like this quote from the article too.
“Well, you give those big guys a head start on you,” Reid said. “At that time I would imagine that the linemen were fairly equal athletically, and now the offensive linemen are so big and the defensive linemen are relatively smaller.” If you’re a defender today, he went on, and you spot a 300-plus-pound blocker a two-step running start, he’ll knock you “right on your ass.”

It also amused to also to ponder on the size of Reid (see the reference to his huge hawiian shirt). Coaches always seem to get bigger. Reid, Holmgren, Sherman, Mike McKenzie, they all get bigger as time moves on. Must be all those high-calorie takeaway meals, snatched as they dash from one task to the next.

1265:

I actually did read "Master and Commander". I loved the movie so much I decided to give the book series a try. I ultimately liked the book, but it took me 100 pages or so to get comfortable with the language. I intended to continue the series, but have never acquired the second book--other things (like reading Mark Bowden and Daniel Silva) have intervened.

Finally, I think you identified the reason behind the expanding waistlines of many NFL coaches (although not Tony Dungy). I would also suggest that some people get fat under stress, others get thin. I wish I was the latter, but I appear to be the former.
