This is something I have wondered for years. Wouldn't it be worth it to have a roster spot for a kicker that can always kick it 80 yards within a 50 yard (sideline to sideline) range.

I looked but could not find where the average starting field position is after a kickoff but for the sake of argument lets say it is the 35. You would be gaining 15 yards per kickoff. An again for the sake of argument lets say that you have four kickoffs a game.

That would be 60 yards gained. I would keep a roster spot for someone who can do that.

Thoughts from others?

Oh yes, definately. Has anybody like that ever existed?

What I'm curious about, is if there were a kickoff specialist who could kick a touchback on every single kick, without fail, year after year...would the net field position gained make him worthy of a first-round pick?
