Full Version: Rudi Johnson, Culpepper

I've always been in the (very small) minority of Packer fans who likes Culpepper.

To my mind, he's got one major flaw -- small hands, which means he'll put it on the ground more than average.

But, despite that, I think he's worth more than the veteran's minimum. I mean, in his career at Minnesota, he had to deal with Mike Tice as a coach, with the hadn't-grown-up-yet Randy Moss, and the no-one-is-fuller-of-himself-than-I-am(except-maybe-Joe-Theisman) Cris Carter. Yet he would have been MVP in 2004 (39 TDs, 11 INTs, completion percentage over 69%) had Peyton Manning not been having his incredible year. Then he had to try to come back from a horrific injury on the stellar teams of Miami and Oakland.

And that letter of his on profootballtalk.com...sorta belies his "dumb as a rock" reputation, doesn't it?

I frankly don't think he's as good as his 2004 season suggests (any more than I think Peyton is as good as *his* 2004 season suggests or Brady is as good as *his* 2007 season suggests). But he's got a heck of a lot to offer, even post-injury. I frankly don't understand why no one has picked him up.

And this "teams only want to deal with players through agents"...that strikes me as Ari Fleischer-type speak. I mean, come on. It's a business, right, NFL GMs? You'd rather deal with another Drew Rosenhaus and his games than a (relatively) unsophisticated player? Give me a break. NFL GMs, you really think Daunte's having an agent is going to make him *more* likely to settle for the NFL minimum? Give me a break. NFL GMs, you really think that any agent is going to say to Daunte, yep, all I'm going to be able to get for you is the NFL minimum? Give me an effin' break.

Personally, I think Culpepper's making a mistake not having an agent in this day and age. But not because it decreases his chances for landing with an NFL team. Because it decreases how much he's going to be able to get from that ultimate future employer.

Personally, I'd love to have Culpepper on the Packers right now. Not because he's better than Rodgers. But because he's better right now -- a lot better -- than either Brohm or Flynn.

So he thinks he's starter material. Big deal. Why in the world would a team want a quarterback on their roster who doesn't think he's starter material?

And why, oh why, are people so sure that he'd be lobbying for the starting job the first time Rodgers had a bad game? I mean, he's no fool. He's just seen McCarthy face down Brett Favre in favor of "moving on with Aaron". He knows he's not going to win any attempt to lobby for the starting job with Green Bay.

I'm not among those who think Aaron Rodgers is "injury prone". But the fact of the matter is that most NFL quarterbacks miss time most every year. Rodgers is playing at a position where backups are more likely than not to have to play significant minutes. And I'd rather have Daunte Culpepper for those minutes than either Matt Flynn or Brian Brohm.

Unfortunately, short of some injured reserve shenanigans, I don't see how Thompson finds room for any vet QB backup at this point. Four quarterbacks on a roster of 53 is, well, four quarterbacks. And I can't see releasing either Brohm or Flynn at this point.

.

Because he believes he should be getting quite a bit of money. That's why noone has picked him up.

He's no fool? I think he is. When Childress came aboard in Minny, he wanted Daunte's input in the offense, Daunte just wanted a 100 million dollar deal after tearing three ligaments. Bye, Daunte.

Now, he has proved that he could be a servicable backup, and he wants starter money.

Sounds like a fool to me.

Unfortunately, I just can't stand his playing...

The Pack had the best vet QB in the game, why relase him and bring in some has been? I think TT made a commitment to develop young guys.
