It was nice to hear people rationally discussing this topic without the 'hatred' we have seen on the boards lately - mostly pointed toward Favre, but some pointed toward Thompson.

It was an interesting thought that perhaps the "flip-flop" (I hate that term) at the end of March was due to the fact that they were happy to welcome him back - but as a backup. That was never specified one way or another, was it? It would certainly explain a lot... And would be consistent with the organization's stance now.

I'll second that, nice discussion.

Do you two still rate Holmgren above McCarthy as a signal caller ? The last time you mentioned both, I had the strong impression that you thought Holmgren was the better playcaller, but as the body of evidence increases I believe MM is both the more innovative, and more daring. Holmgren was a successful play caller, but was quite conservative (not always a bad thing). I put a few things about McCarthys playcalling in this thread.

On the one hand, I remember Holmgren being conservative. He never used the shotgun and if I recall Fritz hardly ever blitzed, which ultimately reflects on Holmgren. Although he had Reggie White, so maybe blitzing wasn't necessary.

On the other hand, I remember Holmgren having a creative side too - at least early on. I recall two plays against TB where Sterling Sharpe was lined up as the QB and they had 2 or 3 players wide. It was a strange formation, I don't think it worked, but it showed some creativity. I also thought Holmgren was creative (and right) for letting TDavis score at the end of the SuperBowl, so we could get a chance to tie the game.

I guess overall I would Holmgen the edge since we won a SuperBowl and has been successful with two teams over many years. I am hopeful for McCarthy, because I agree with you - he seems to have a creative side even though he's from Pittsburgh.
