With the draft just over a month away, it appears there could be quite a bit of movement in the first round.

A number of teams are looking for a limited amount of talent at a few key positions. With that in mind, I've decided to incorporate trades in my first mock draft.

An elite pass rusher like Ohio State's Vernon Gholston or an interior presence such as USC defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis could be good enough for a team to jump forward a few spots to acquire the player.

Considering there is no true franchise quarterback in a Peyton Manning mold, it might be difficult for the Dolphins to move out of the top spot. If there are going to be any deals, things should start to heat up after the top three selections.

Team Pick Analysis

30. Green Bay Packers
Brian Brohm
QB, Louisville The Packers could take a corner for the future at this point or even tight end Fred Davis. However, if you're thinking future, Brohm hedges the bet on Aaron Rodgers to replace Brett Favre. Green Bay has a very good team and has already bolstered their linebackers in free agency. A move down would not be out of the question.

Players currently outside of the first round who might break in next week include Devin Thomas, Michigan wide receiver Mario Manningham, Felix Jones, Jonathan Stewart, Early Doucet, Sam Baker.

I wouldn't blink twice if Stewart was still on the board at #30. I'd sprint to the podium with my selection card.

I thought Kirwan was foolish with his prediction for the Packers last year. After all we had a great DL, what did we want with some kid name Justin Harrell who didn't play much his Senior year?

So I wouldn't be surprised if the pick is Brohm. Sure would represent value, but I would prefer going in a differenet direction. I would have gone with Stewart in this scenario, followed by OT Sam Baker, Brohm, and then Felix Jones. Actually, with these players left, ideally I could trade down 4-5 picks and probably still get one of them and maybe an extra 3rd.

Read this earlier today and thought it over. Well actually since we've been discusing it on site here over the last week.

Now, if we took Brohm or any other QB in round 1 and even if it was a BPA and value pick; it wouldn't make sense; unless they wouldn't believe honestly in AR. To take a QB in the first round for anything other then to be the team's starter...this year or fairly soon doesn't make sense. The reason it don't is number one cap room. 2 first QB picks?? What team could afford that luxury? RW and MH had many QBs here over the years and drafted a bunch as well. We're all aware of Burnell, Detmer, Brooks and Hasselbeck that went on to be starters on other teams. BUT, they never spent a first round pick on any of those. TT and MM are different people with different style from RW&MH; but I still can't see us taking a QB in the first round unless contrary to what's been said; they don't have 100% faith in AR.

With that said; no way does Brohm make it to our 2nd rd pick either; unless something miraculous happens. But to see us draft a QB anywhere from round 2 (because of the extra pick) thru round 5 wouldn't surprise me either.

To pass on Brohm cuz we dont have a need for a QB is very stupid IMO as we did that with Rodgers at one point took a QB we had no need for at that time.. Rodgers still has alot to prove in the NFL so a young gun to push him will be good as the loser can be traded later on.. I would love to see GB take Brohm as i think hes the best QB in the last two drafts... By the way TT does not draft for need in round one if u look at his MO he takes BPA that will fit in his system in a year or two...

Well, you might sprint but Stewart would be limping. Didnt' he just have surgery on that toe recently requiring 4-6 months of rehab?

That comparison doesn't really hold up. We did have a need for Rodgers...a need for him to eventually replace Brett Favre, who was well into his 30's. There is less than two years' difference between Rodgers' age and that of Brohm. Backup QB is an important position, but hardly worth a 1st round pick, IMO.

I think having Brohm behind Rodgers would keep a fire lit under Rodgers Ass. Why is the QB position a "Sacred Cow" against competition? We want strong competition in EVERY Position Except the most important one??? Really does not make sense.
*Plus I will put a $100 down in Vegas that Rodgers will not play all 16 Regular season games this year.

If Brohm is there, I would not be suprised if the Pack can trade out of the first?

Yes Take Brohm waste our pick and have him sit on the bench and then in 3 years trade him for a fifth round pick. 99.999999 percent chance the Packers dont take a QB in the first day.
Eye in the Sky
The packers passed on Matt Leinhart and Brady Quinn. Although Ted takes the BPA he has already decided A-Rod will be the starter. Ted won't waste a pick on a QB that is rated lower than both M.Leinhart and B.Quinn for the sake of taking the BPA. He has a little more sense than that.

BTW "grey" I agree J.Stewart is a stud.

I agree that there's a lot of value in having a strong backup QB for both the reasons you mentioned (competition and the likelihood that the starter will miss some playing time). I just don't think it's enough value to justify a 1st round pick for a player who (IMO) does not rate out as a 1st round prospect.
