Off-week Strategy

Was driving home tonight listening to an interview with Aaron Rodgers & Brady Poppinga on the radio, and heard something I thought others may find interesting. The question was about how difficult it must be for the team to get any work done this week in preparation for the next game, when they didn't know who their opponent will be.
Brady & Aaron's response was "Coach McCarthy is having the entire team and coaching staff go back to simplifying things, concentrating all our work on the fundamentals. As he says, that will help us regardless of who we end up playing."
Sometimes everyone can get all caught up in how much technology, game-planning and schemes have such a significant affect on the outcomes of games, when in reality concentration on the same basic fundamental elements of football that grade school teams work on can still be an important factor on the success of teams at the highest level of the sport.
May be one more reason why this team has experienced the success they have this season.

So true.
Mike McCarthy plans to have them practicing in pads for the first two practices back too.
In the end, it comes down to it, playing playoff football is about playing sound, physical, team football.
I think Mike is taking the right approach.

I watched the Mark Taucher show, Aaron Rodgers was his guest, they talked about the same thing- Fundementals. Tackling, no false starts, etc...

I like everything about the way McCarthy scheduled this bye week.
1st, I think it's important to get the guys away for a couple days. I've heard rookies say after the season that the hardest part was the grind and that they were not prepared for the mental rigors. I think the 4 days off helps a lot. Guys can have a fun day or two, unwind and then get back for the tough playoff run
2nd, he's practicing in pads doing the fundemental things as you guys talked about on Friday and Saterday. Because there is no game this week, I think it's important that they work on their pad level and basic football technique.
This is out of McCarthy's control, but I'm glad we got the Saturday game. Now we get an extra day in preparation for the Dallas game.

Some people try to find things in this game that don't exist but football is only two things - blocking and tackling.

... oh and running. lots of running.
... and don't forget kicking. i mean it's called football for a reason.
... oh yeah, passing. forgot about passing for a second there.
... of course catching. somebody has to catch those passes and kicks.
... but yeah. blocking and tackling are in there too.

Seriously though, the more sound they are, the more dangerous. If they place relatively mistake free, I can't see this team losing.
Interesting that you'd mention that, it reminded me of something else Aaron Rodgers said during the radio interview.
When asked who they were concerned about playing in the playoffs, Aaron responded something to the effect "I don't mean to sound overconfident, but to be perfectly honest the only team we feel can beat us in the playoffs is ourselves. If we do our jobs as we should, we don't think there's anybody out there who can beat us."
Another quick tidbit from the interview, one caller started a question with "When you get healthy......". Rodgers quickly cut them off and very seriously said "I'm 100% healthy right now".
