Moderators, is there a chance to have this revisited, or at least defined? The 'view new posts' link is a GREAT tool to search for new messages and catch up on threads that have had activity since the last visit. This flood control, unfortunately, makes it very difficult to make a quick scan of new messages, especially short ones that don't take long to digest, as you then receive this warning when using the 'view new posts' link:

"Sorry, the board administrator has enabled search flood control. Please wait at least 20 seconds before trying again."

I'm sure you have a reason for implementing this, but it would be great if you could either consider getting rid of this, or give a little info showing its usefulness, if you don't mind.

Hey vgolfmaster - We are aware of the flood posting, however, it is for the benefit of the board. It both makes things more of a pain for spammers as well as slowing down regular posters to maybe think about their replies. If people are answering multiple questions in less than 20 seconds, how much are they truly thinking about their replies?

Thanks for the reply grabthar. I understand the need to control spamming, but a control on how often multiple posts can be made would address that without slowing down those of us who are trying to browse new messages quickly.

I'm gonna leave the second part of your reply alone, as it point to a little bit of dictatorship and disrupt the flow of normal conversation. That makes about as much sense as putting a 'max' time to post, in order to prevent one from over thinking, lol.

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.

Vgolfmaster - The control is only on how often multiple posts can be made, not how often they can be browsed or viewed. You can click on the View New Messages and click on one link after another, as fast as you want to go, without getting the flood posting message. Maybe I'm not seeing what you are, but I can click on View New Posts and it shows me all the new ones and I can go right down the list clicking on whatever ones I want to view as fast as I can click. I've also clicked on the top post, clicked back on View New Posts, clicked on the 2nd post, clicked back on View New Posts, etc, and do not get the Flood posting message.

Maybe you are using a different method to view the posts.

Actually, I do get this sometimes. Maybe I am a little quick at times or maybe a lot of activity. It is not normal problem and waiting (usually) a very short time (20 to 30 seconds) allows me to "view New Messages" again.

grabthar,

I use the 'view new posts' link, and do get a list of threads that show new messages, then I use the 'last post by:' link on the first thread to go directly to the last post for the particular thread. To get back to the list of new posts, I then use the 'View New Posts' link again, and this is where I am getting this message. Not sure if it has something to do with using the 'last post by:' link or not, but something is triggering that error every time I read a post too quickly and then click the 'view new posts link too quickly.

If I am hearing you right, you are not getting the flood control mssg by using this same method, but you said you clicked directly on the post in the 'new messages' list, where as I am clicking on the 'last post by:' link to navigate right to the last message for each thread.

Is there a different or easier way for me to do what I am trying to do, and quickly scroll through all of the new posts since my last visit? I guess I'm asking this - the only options I see after clicking the 'view new posts' link are

1) click the thread title, taking me to the first post of the thread
2) click the 'last post by' link, taking me to the last post of the thread

Is there a way to take me directly to the oldest unread message in each thread, in case there are 4 or 5 unread messages in a thread?

I should add too, this shows all the time for me, even when not replying to ANY posts. If it is supposed to control how often posts can be made only, it is not working right, as it is controlling how many can be viewed.

mods,

It just struck me also, you are most likely NOT seeing the flood control error mssg because it is not in place for the mods. This would explain the differing behavior between your use of the 'view new posts' link and ours.

It is easily circumvented just be using the browsers 'back' option, so in all reality it is not serving its intended purpose. If you are open for suggestions, I'd prefer to see it removed so the functionality of resorting the unread messages is available all the time, as opposed to having to use the 'back' option, then refreshing, to avoid the flood control mssg.
