Mock Draft 4-16-08

1st Round: Antoine Cason CB Arizona- I know another mock with him as the top pick. Well the fact is CB/S will probably be the best value at this point of the draft unless someone falls like Stewart or Felix Jones to 30th or Ted really likes someone like Hardy. Right now many have a Flowers, Cason, Phillips, and maybe even Talib around this spot. If Talib is there at 30 I think he will be the pick just because of his skill set alone, but I think its unlikely. The really question I think will become should GB take the 5th best corner in the draft or the best safety in the draft. I think it would be Cason. One reason is that corners are valued more than safeties and two Cason can play both corner and safety where as Phillips is just a safety.
2nd Rounda: Martellus Bennett TE Texas A&M- Could easily be John Carlson and maybe because everything I hear is that Green Bay like Carlson. But Bennett is similar to Carlson in value but is 2 inchs taller and a hair faster. WOuld be a great target for Rodgers in the red zone. Is in the mold or Gates and Gonzalez in the fact that Bennett was also played on the Texas A&M basketball team. One of the few TEs in this draft that is solid at both catching and blocking, the type of TE Green Bay is in need of.
2nd Roundb: Jordy Nelson WR Kansas State- Probably the first pick in this mock that will raise some eye brows. I have a theory, based on trends, that Ted picks smaller school stand outs in the second/third that many feel probably are being take a round or two early. Collins was the first, then Jennings, and then Jones. Now its Nelson. As I mapped out in another mock when I had green bay taking Earl Bennett, WR may not be a gross need but outside of Jennings and Jones the position isnt solid for the future. If Driver can play like he has for the next two years thats a different story but at this point Ted takes a guy that will height and another target for Rodgers.
3rd Round: John Greco OG/OT Toldeo- We get our OT of the future in Greco but not only that we may also get a guy that can be starting as a rookie at OG. Depending on how the coaches view him he maybe a backup and just make him focus on OT or they could go with playing him at OG and slide him to OT when Clifton or Tauscher leaves.
4th Rounda: Brian Johnston DE Gardner-Webb- Just a solid all around DE prospect. Kinda in the Kampman mold where he is a really high motor guy and is more of a bull rusher. Well challenge for a back up spot and probably get it and will give Kampman and other more time to rest in this up coming season.
4th Round b: Orlando Scandrick CB Bosie State- One of my favorite mid round corners. He is pretty much the type of cornerback Green Bay would want. He is ideal for be a man coverage corner. They could go Jack Ikegwuonu at this spot too if Scandrick is off the board.
5th Round: Kevin O'Connell QB San Diego State- Developmental Qb with talent that in two year might be a pretty good pro.
7th Round: Durant Brooks P Georgia Tech- I am going to go out on a limb here and say Brooks doesnt go until the late 6th or 7th. Before anyone calls me crazy I have Crosby going to us in the 5th round in acouple mocks last year when everyone was saying 3rd or even 2nd round would be where he went. THe fact is punters arent in high demand so Brooks probably will fall and if he is there in the 7th Green Bay could have the best Punter in this year's draft come in and battle with Ryan.

LeRoy36, I really like your draft except for one thing. IMHO, the Packers should NEVER, EVER DRAFT A PUNTER! NEVER! eVER! Sorry about the caps and emphasis, but I feel really strongly on this issue. I offered this challenge before, and I'll do it again: can you tell me the last successful punter the Packers drafted in the last 40 years? Yes, go back to 1968. And, no- Donny Anderson doesn't count (he was a halfback who punted, not a pure punter). Seriously, get a guy in free agency, but don't draft a punter.
Otherwise, that would be a terrific draft!

I tend to agree. Young punters tend to bounce around the league before becoming consistently good enough to stick with a team. Better off bringing in guys that just missed the cut for other teams.

Nice effort Leroy36.
I like your selections and the positional direction.
In reality, I like your DE better than the one I chose in my last mock effort, kenny iwebema from Iowa, but I went iwebema in round 5. I had chris ellis as a 3rd round prospect and johnston as a 4th rounder along with scandrick.
I have to agree with ricky with a small r on the punter thing, why spend a draft pick when the chances of a guy actually panning out increase after he has been cut 3 or 4 times? Why be the one who cuts him first? wait and be the one who picks him up after 3 times cut... I think this adds mental toughness as well as consistency in performance, unless you have a ray guy type where an early pick is justified (few and far between).
Nice mock, I like it.

The last successful punter the Packers drafted was Josh Bidwell in the 4th round in 1999. Bidwell overcame cancer to become a very good NFL punter. He is still punting for Tampa Bay. He even made the Pro Bowl in 2005.

We ALREADY signed a FA punter in Dougherty(sp) that was on the team last year. He was giving Ryan a good run.........Came in late but gave a good showing.........this year he'll have the whole camp to prove himself.
Competition.
